to USS Ronin – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG

((Deck 11, Main Engineering warp core reactor main level, USS Ronin))

In the soft, pulsing blue light of the warp core, two officers stood close together, their conversation mingling with the low hum of the ship’s heart as they discussed power systems on a miniature scale.

Morgan: ::smiling still looking over the akai stick:: I’m sure I could get you something that shouldn’t give feedback on you, but yet the ability to curl someone's hair if you needed to, though I wouldn’t recommend it. Say, three settings of stun? I don’t recall seeing you before Ensign is this your first posting?

T’Fearne instinctively reached up to touch her dark, curly hair, swept back in a tie.

oO I want to do a lot more to them than curl their hair!... And why wouldn’t she recommend curling someone's hair… Humans are fascinating! Oo

Putting aside the more senior officers' odd comments, T’Fearne nodded in confirmation to the lieutenant’s latter question.

T’Fearne: I am relatively new to the Ronin, and this is my first assignment out of the academy. I fought aboard DS33 with the ships and station security personnel. In this duty post, I got a very close and personal look at what frontier battles can be like. We are heading back to the Alpha Isles, and:: softly:: I want to be better prepared.

Morgan: I can relate. I came aboard about a month before the showdown with the Lattice Alliance, so I missed the killer robots from outer space.

T’Fearne’s dark gaze flicked to Rachel's emerald one as the Lieutenant chuckled but sobered quickly. It seemed like an expression of dark humour to the Vulcazoid, she didn’t take it as callousness from the red-head.

T’Fearne: I arrived on DS33 shortly before the Ronin docked after that attack. We probably came aboard at similar times. Where did you serve before Ronin?

Idly, she noticed that almost every human she had talked to lately had green eyes.

oO Is that the common human eye colour? Oo

She thought over all the humans she had met both recently and at the Academy. Brown seemed to be more dominant, but here on the Ronin, Evinrude, Kirsty and this Lieutenant Morgan all had green eyes. Doctor Beck’s were a chocolate brown, and Sybil’s a bright blue.

oO Maybe there is a correlation to green eyes and the gold uniform? Oo

Morgan: I know how tough it can be to integrate into a new ship. I’ve only served on one other starship before my post here. My last gig was at Utopia Planitia Ship Yards, building propulsion systems for under-construction starships, runabouts, fighters, you name it I mostly likely had a hand in designing or putting the thing together with a team.

The tall Vulcazoid’s slanted brows rose, intrigued. She wondered if the engineer might be too qualified for something as minor as modifying her akai into a shock stick.

T’Fearne: That’s impressive! I’ve piloted quite a few shuttle types back at the Academy and on Betazed. Propulsion systems seem very advanced compared to this. :: retracting the stick with a soft metallic slither::

She was about to take her stick back and also retract her request and offer to ask someone less integral to the operation of a starship about her little shock stick idea, but the red-head held her hand out for the other stick, so she handed it over to be with its twin.

Morgan: I could trick these out if you want. Completely tailored to you.

A warm rush of gratitude ran over the Vulcazoid.  Morgan already looked light years away, calculating something in the depths of her mind that T’Fearne couldn’t fathom.

T’Fearne: Thank you, Lieutenant! One more thing—:: expression serious:: Do you think it possible to deliver a contact charge at a frequency that could interfere with or disable areas of a Tholian exoskeletal suit? :: slanted brows knitting slightly:: You know they explode in combat when the suits are fatally compromised? I thought that if we could stun them in combat, even temporarily, we might buy enough time for our people to get clear… maybe take a prisoner.

Morgan: Response

T’Fearne::: starting to list potential problems:: I realise that all we have is fragmented data from damaged station sensors of the Tholian’s exo-suits responses during combat, and that is not likely to be very helpful with calibrating something effective. It may be a waste of time. There are too many unknown factors. They could have failsafe self-destructs in the exo-suits ready to go off if they are incapacitated to ensure none are captured. I just feel that I should try something, even if it fails, then we will try again with more data.

She gave the engineer a determined look. T’Fearne had been feeling unusually tenacious about improving the odds for another encounter with the Lattice. More than her normal targ with a bone mentality when it came to crew security.

Morgan: Response

She appreciated the Lieutenant not trying to get her hopes up and being candid with her evaluation of the idea.

T’Fearne: As you say. :: a slight nod of agreement:: Even if it is merely a stun stick for non-insulated beings, that would still be very useful. Thank you, Lieutenant. I appreciate your help and perspective. :: hesitating:: I’ll leave these with you then?

She gestured to her akai in Morgan's grasp as the engineer’s hands were already working over the weapons.

Morgan: Response

With a last glance at the engineer, the security officer stepped out of the Engine Room and headed to the Security complex. She felt odd leaving her battle sticks in the hands of another, but the redhead's hands were rough with tiny scars, the hands of a woman who earned mastery in her trade through trial and error. She was curious to see what the engineer would do with the Akai.

[Tag, if you want! / End of Scene for T’Fearne for now.]
