T’Fearne: ::offering to Solana:: You may use me to demonstrate if you like.
The breeze shifted, carrying the scent of salt and something faintly floral from the jungle canopy above. The falls continued their endless descent behind them, a light cooling mist occasionally dampening their skin.
T’Fearne adopted a loose relaxed stance, feet shoulder width apart. Waiting for the Senior Chief’s direction. She assumed they would do some sort of warm up together and then split into pairs. She wondered if Jenta would want her to pair up with one of the non security officers or if the two shorter officers would be paired together and she and Jenta would spar together.
Solana: Certainly, though I hope you don’t regret that tomorrow. ::she chuckled and addressed them all:: These are training knives, which when we’re done you’ll at least know which end goes into the other person. But the basis on close quarters combat doesn’t require a weapon. In fact, a lot of times you might find the only way to protect yourself is with your own hands and body.
Accepting the training knife and the smirk Jenta gave her. T’Fearne had assumed that this would be a casual demonstration, but if the Orion was warning her of impending bruises, then she had better pay more attention. Drawing in a slow breath. Then exhaled. Her attention shifted to Jenta. She started analysing the expert knife wielder.
Taj’el: I would have hoped one would know the correct end of a knife prior to this class.
Wren: ::poking the tip of the training knife with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension:: oO…. Wait, is this modeled after those Andorian flute-daggers? I’ve been trying to get ahold of one of these because they’re supposed to be hard to play. Oo ::no longer fully paying attention::
T’Fearne: Response
After passing over the knives to the others she tossed the two she kept for herself into the sand behind her and kept her focus on T’Fearne. The Orion slowly shifted her stance, letting her toes dig into the sand a little. Her arms raised, hands open palmed but held in front of her while she met the Vulcanoid’s gaze.
Jenta tossed two knives into the sand behind her, indicating the knife play wasn’t starting just yet. T’Fearne accordingly tossed her blade behind her, out of tripping range. The Orion then sifted her stance and made a show of displaying green open palms to the tree other officers.
Solana: Since I know T’Fearne has some training we’ll warm up with some sparring a few minutes. Then I’ll teach you some basic movements and several different scenarios and how to protect yourself during them. First lesson…
The moment Jenta’s gaze met her dark one she knew what the woman was about to do. She raised a hand, palm towards the shower of sand that headed towards her face from the other woman's swift kick of sand. The silicon grains hit her lower face, neck and dusted the front of her exercise top and down into some uncomfortable places that she would have to address later. At least she had kept her eyes clear, which was the most important thing for now.
Solana: Your opponent will not always fight honorably.
She gave Jenta a slightly sandy raised eyebrow over the hand. She had calculated an eighty seven percent chance of a sandy kick, contemplated the use of that move herself, but realised she slightly underestimated the Orion woman. She upped the probability of Jenta using dirty tricks to ninety seven percent just as the security expert rushed forward.
They engaged in a slow warmup for the benefit of the two other officers. The Orion threw casual strikes that T’Fearne deflected or avoided. She took a few steps back, to the side, not on the offensive yet, merely warming up with this defensive dance, happy to follow Jenta’s lead. T’Fearne sharp hearing easily caught the comments of the others off to the side.
Wren: ::softly:: I don’t think I can do that, I- she said this was a beginner class.
Taj’el: They may be attempting to impress you. If it had been stated that this was a class for beginners, they will not expect more from you. They will teach you the basics.
Out of the corner of her eye she caught Taj’el pulling on their gloves, the moment of distraction cost her as Jenta’s next strike was a feint and a knee landed glanced her solar plexus and she felt the air compress painfully in her lungs. She dropped to a knee in the sand and swallowed a little “Ooph!” and tried to get back on track.
oO Ouch! Oo
Solana: Response
T’Fearne: It’s fine, a momentary distraction. Let us continue.
She accepted the offered hand up off the ground, rising back to her feet, a handful of sand tucked in her other fist. On Jenta’s next attack, T’Fearne took the offensive, flinging the handful of sand at the Orion’s face and stepping into the other woman, accepting a blow in exchange for the closeness to slide her leg round the green ankle, trying for a simple sweep. Jenta was clearly no novice and she reacted to the basic move.
Wren: ::to Taj’el:: Wait, how did she do that? It looked like- ::realizing that Taj’el seems to be following this closer than her:: Do you remember any of this being covered at the academy?
Taj’el: The basics, yes. Watch their fundamentals before attempting to copy everything. Observe where their feet are positioned, and their hips.
T’Fearne: Shall we go faster, Senior Chief? Or would you prefer to keep things simple for this demonstration?
Solana: Response
She was starting to wonder if Jenta was playing with her a little, enjoying herself as well as demonstrating for the other officers. They were physically very similar, both approximately five eleven, long dark hair, athletic muscle tone and aesthetically gifted here and… there. With the exception of green skin and pointed ears they could have been related.
Jenta’s next move nearly took them both to the ground, T’Fearne rolled away and jumped back to her feet. She didn’t hide the wry grin that was growing on her face. She was starting to have fun too.
Taj’el: Foundation is key, and most of your power will come from your hips. Males tended to have more arm power, with exceptions, of course. I am sure they will go over it further; however, I believed they were simply having fun now.
Having ramped up her participation from deflecting to full participation in the dance of give and take, T’Fearne subtly let herself attune to Jenta’s movements. Letting her empathic sense guide her alerting when the Orion woman would strike based on a spark of excitement or a moment of calculating patience. Their speed had increased slowly and she wasn’t sure if it was her, Jenta or both of them picking up the pace.
T’Fearne: ::starting to breathe more deeply, warmth spreading through her muscles:: Indeed. We are just starting to warm up.
She aimed a slap to the side of Jenta’s head, expecting a block, but following up with a knee to the torso. Jenta did something then that she wasn’t expecting and she found herself barely regaining balance with a new sting to remember her by later. No wonder the woman had warned her about tomorrow's regrets. She had clearly rolled and folded many over confident officers.
Solana/Wren: Response
Taj’el: Different styles focused on different things. They are focused more on trading and blocking attacks. Suus Mahna, however, is more evasive and centered on redirecting attacks. I admit I do not know much about Tassa’Akai beyond its cultural background.
T’Fearne took a step back, dissengaging and held up a hand to Jenta, a silent request for a break.
T’Fearne: ::addressing Taj’el, but careful not to take her eyes off Jenta again:: Tassa’Akai is like a dance of defence. It uses telescoping blunt batons in a series of precision strikes, deflection and dodges. It relies less on strength or direct attack. What sets it apart from other martial art forms is its reliance on a slight telepathic use to predetermine what one's opponent is going to do next and vice versa. ::Looking back to Jenta:: As much as I am enjoying being tenderised up and down the beach by you, Senior Chief, your other students are being neglected. Might we continue with the knives?
Solana/Wren: Response
She offered Jenta a respectful bow, already feeling the bruises starting to form. She suspected she would earn a few more before the lesson was over.
Taj’el: Impressive, to you both. I can see you are clearly proficient in your abilities.
T’Fearne: ::collecting her knife from the sand:: Thank you.
Solana/Wren: Response
She took a position across from the other Betazoid, so they could both see Jenta demonstrating the knife techniques. Leaving Taj’el to take a turn at the Orion’s gentle instruction. T’Fearne felt a little bad, but only a little.
T’Fearne: ::To Wren:: It’s ok, this part is beginner level and don’t worry. You won’t hurt me. Let loose and have fun with it.
Holding her practice knife low, she copied Jenta’s grip.
Solana/Taj’el/Wren: Response
