Niac:   You seem to be full of suggestions, Ensign, so why don't you tell me what I should do with you?

Vailani: :: looks at the pile of PADDs :: I can take some of those. You'll find that I'm more than proficient in systems design and shipwide infrastructure, I have experience in reprogramming computer systems :: nervously :: I'll also swap out the EPS regulators. I shouldn't have missed that.

Karrod resumed his seat and leaned back, his expression hard.

Niac: Are you suggesting that I circumvent my own chain of command and start randomly assigning tasks that Chief Corelli is more than capable of running down in due time?  I don't think so, Ensign.

Vailani: Understood.

Karrod took very little pleasure in dressing down a subordinate but this was a lesson that he had to make stick firmly in a young officers memory.  The ability to trust and to operate within a team was fundamental to functioning within the tight knit community of a starship.  He suspected if she didn't learn the lesson here and now she wasn't destined for a long career.  He tapped at the comm controls on his desk.

Niac: =/\= Mr. Raga, please join me in the ready room. =/\=

Vailani: Captain, I hope you understand that, although misguided, I only wanted to assist in the ship's proficiency. :: resolute :: I'll work every minute I can to make sure we're ready for launch ::beat:: On your schedule.

Karrod chuckled with a dark humor.

Niac: Ensign, it's not what you did...it's how you did it.  If you'd filed this report properly it would've helped the ship.  If you'd gone to your team leader or department head and presented this to them, they would've been receptive.  But you were annoyed, you were sure you were right, and you were dismissive of the trained and experienced people surrounding you.  But don't worry, I've got an idea of how to remedy that deficiency.

The door to his office swished open and Lt. Cmdr. Raga stode in with a questioning look.  Karrod glanced past the still rigid Ensign and nodded.

Niac:  Ah, Mr. Raga.  Ensign Vailani here was just telling me about the lackluster state of the ship and the inadequacy of our timetable.  In fact, she felt it was so serious that she entirely forgot about the entire chain of command and came right up here to report it to me personally.

Vailani/Raga:  Response

Karrod kept looking past her, his conversational tone with his First Officer crisp but strangely light.

Niac:  Yes well I was just thinking about how to address this memory issue of hers.  Tell me, are we still shorthanded in the crew mess?

Raga:  Response

His soft smile turned entirely feral.

Niac: To me that sounds like an excellent opportunity to lend a hand in a critical area and, at the same time, learn more about the crew of which she is now a part.  Wouldn't you say, Number One?

Raga:  Response

Karrod had to bite his lip to avoid laughing.

Niac:  Oh that is an excellent suggestion, Mr. Raga.  Truly excellent.  Can you see that the Ensign's duty assignments are adjusted accordingly?

Raga: Response

Niac nodded and turned his attention back towards one of the many other padds stacked on his desk but as he retrieved one, he glanced back towards the suffering junior officer.

Niac:  Ensign, I strongly believe in second chances.  I advise you to take advantage of this one and learn all you can about what actually makes a starship operate.  If in one months time I find your understanding to still be lacking you will be on the first cramped shuttlepod to Starbase Eighty.  Am I clear, Ensign Vailani?

Vailani:  Response

Karrod turned his attention back to his padd and resumed work on the report he'd been halfway through when the Ensign stormed in.

Niac:  Dismissed.

With a nod he signaled for Raga to stay behind for a moment as Ensign Vailani beat a hasty retreat.  When the door closed he let out a long, slow breath and rolled his head, generating pops and cracks from his neck.

Niac:  Keep an eye on that one, Toryn.  If she gets her act together I've got a pretty good feeling about her.

Raga: Response

He shook his head and suddenly felt very tired and more than a bit old.  From within Niac chided him for being so hard on the young girl but Horvu, the only other host of Niac's who had served in Starfleet, understood his reasoning well.

Niac: She reminds me of her father in a lot of ways...same intensity, same confidence, same desire to act.  But he has four decades of experience.  If we don't teach her to channel it she's going to get herself killed.

Raga: Response

Karrod chucked and properly got back to work.

Niac:  In that case I'll start locking my door.  Thank you Commander.

Raga: Response

As he settled back into his desk chair for the long haul Karrod tried to remember if he'd ever been that young and brash and cocky.  Niac cheerily provided him with an entire vivid montage of his youthful memories in excruciating detail until a swift thumb to the abdomen put a stop to it.
