After being caught a little off guard by Commander Alieth in the 47, T’Fearne is both slightly intimidated and curious to meet Ronin’s resident Vulcan 2CO and to hear what assignment is about to come her way.

As she retrieved her padd, she belatedly realised that she should have met the commander with the ta’al as it had been offered. The commander didn’t seem to mind, but she wouldn’t. oOSo many small mistakesOo She blamed it on being overly exposed to empathic auras today.

Alieth: I hope your entry into the crew went smoothly. We are not in our best shape at the moment.

Following the Commander's beckon, she walked with the Vulcan officer as she led the way out of 47 and into the warren of the ship.

T’Fearne: Yes, Sir, I understand that Ronin and her crew have been through a lot. I am still getting up to speed reviewing personnel and familiarising myself with recent mission reports of the Alpha Isles.

The petite Vulcan nodded.

Alieth: It sounds wise. :: she made a small pause and tilted her head:: What about you, ne-lan1, where are you from, Minshara2 maybe?

With the Vulcan’s question came a wave of nostalgia, but the emotion was all hers and precious. It had been some time since she had called her father and longer still since they had conversed in the tongue of his homeworld.

T’Fearne: ::Blinking twice:: Vulcan is my planet of birth, but my family travelled to Betazed when I was an infant, ::slight shrug:: I grew up in my mother's family estates in the Khara Archipelago, but my father is originally from Shi’Kar District, in the artisan quarter. I was too young when we left to remember Vulcan myself, though I desire to travel there someday.

Alieth: Fascinating, what about the Academy, did you do your studies on Earth then, or at the Betazed Academy?

T’Fearne: I studied at the Betazed Academy for a semester and then requested a transfer to Earth. My family is very important to me, but I felt the need for… ::Pausing, searching for the right word:: Sahran pa'1

She felt a twinge of embarrassment at the rough pronunciation of the phrase and at how she thought the commander might take it. She didn’t know if the Betazoid concept translated well in Vulcan, so she tried to clarify.

T’Fearne: I mean a time away from the family for personal growth. Though I communicate with them often.

((Some minutes later, Astrometrics Lab - Deck 10 - USS Ronin))

The doors parted, admitting Alieth and T’Fearne into an oddly configured laboratory. Her attention was drawn to the glittering holographic display of what appeared to be a highlighted nebular and then to a lithe feline officer exuding authority.

Alieth: I see you have started without us, Miss Lorana. :: the words had a dry edge to them, but the relaxation around the Vulcan's eyes meant there was no real seriousness in them. :: At ease, officers.

Pressing forward into the room, T’Fearne took up her usual slightly relaxed stance, hands clasped behind her back, giving the meeting her full attention.

Lorana: Commander Alieth will explain the details of our mission and the purpose of our scientific expedition to the Jintara System.

Alieth: As the Lieutenant has surely told you by now, recent long range scans have shown that the star cluster within this nebula has cooled, and show evidence of the formation of a new planet. The dense clouds contain hydrogen, carbon and iron; the ingredients required for a planetary system. But not only that, we have also analysed the spectrograph of the nebula at the points closest to these stars :: she moved the hologram to highlight three-star systems, where the new planets were supposed to be found :: and there is plenty of evidence that there may be significant deposits of Maleconite.

As the briefing progressed, T’Fearne mentally began to compile a list of mission topics that she would have to familiarise herself with to be effective as a security escort. Such as the Jintara System in general, the properties and significance of Maleconite, and reports of a previous mission to Grus Beta 3.

Lorana: As you should be aware, anything we can gather about this region of space can hold much significance to the wider Alpha Isles, not to mention what we may find. Every nebula has its own secrets, our job is to uncover them.

Alieth: We will penetrate the nebula using the approach of Zyre Sh'vavoth, the last explorer who managed to get out of the nebula unscathed, and we will analyse the composition of the nebula in situ, as well as the characteristics of the stellar and planetary systems we find there.

T’Fearne: Lieutenant, ::Interjecting cautiously, brows raised and interpreting a slight twitch of the Caitian’s ear as an acknowledgement to speak:: Ensign T’Fearne, ::respectfully head tilt:: Are there any specific safety protocols or details regarding planet surface exploration we should be aware of?

Lorana: Response

Alieth: In fact, the chances of finding a planet of class E, F, G, K or L are approximately 78.54738%. The chances of the presence of an M-class planet are smaller but not negligible, so we must also be attentive to the possibility of the presence of a colonizable planet that could be a tactical advantage in the current conflict.

T’Fearne: Sir, what class of shuttlecraft will we be taking for the mission?

Lorana: Response

Alieth: If there is an explorable planet, we will beam down an away team, keeping a small party in our runabout. There is a strong likelihood that we will encounter hostile fauna or flora, in addition to the conditions of the young planet itself, and that is why I have recruited you, Ensign T'Fearne.

T’Fearne: ::Nodding to Alieth:: I appreciate the opportunity. Sir. This mission sounds very interesting.

Lorana/Alieth: Response

Glancing around at the crewmembers to listen to their questions and gauge their responses, she catalogued two crewmen, a Bolian and Human, and two ensigns, a Human and a Saurian. She felt a tentative mote of excitement kindle in her being as they discussed mission plans under the light of the tiny nebular. Soon, they would be the tiny creatures travelling through Jintara, and it was her responsibility to help keep them safe as they explored the unknown together.
