((0330 Hours - The 47 Lounge, Catamaran Deck 4, USS Ronin))

Vailani Zoyara, before leaving for the USS Artemis, had left him with a sacred duty, something unique even on the Ronin - one of the more unique ships in the fleet. Without a Chief of Operations, Evinrude typically answered to Lieutenant Commander Tucker as de facto division head. And he wasn't complaining - Marty was affable, capable, fair, and approachable.

But that age-old rivalry, Ops vs. Engineering...the battle was leaning heavily towards the latter on this ship, and had been for as long as Tess had been aboard. Commander Munro, at Captain Niac's request, had served with distinction before her promotion, but she was the only Ops Chief he'd ever known as a career adult.

Evinrude: ::Whispering:: Aaaand...that should do it.

Tess sealed up the console with a deft application of sonic screwdriver, looked up to momentarily admire his handiwork, and walked towards the exit of the completely abandoned 47 Lounge. He'd timed this clandestine activity with the closure of an innocuous late-night shift request, making sure he was free to roam when the Lounge was unoccupied.

Engineering might run the show, but some of the important things, the character of the Ronin...they were passed down to him, and still firmly in the wheelhouse of ops. Or at least the wheelhouse of Evinrude.

((1100 Hours, later that morning - Stellar Cartography, Deck 10, USS Ronin))

There was simply no good reason for a wall in the science complex to have this many holes. Each was identical, a clean vertical slice just a couple of centimeters tall. The grouping was deliberate, as if someone had been using panel junctions on the wall for target practice.

oO Crosshairs... Oo

Tess let out a deep sigh. Behind this wall was a bank of gel packs that networked not just with this deck, but some areas of medical and security as well. It wasn't a simple cosmetic fix.

Evinrude: ::Quietly, to himself.:: Not to mention, the transporter room on deck six...

The doors to that transporter room had been blown apart by Marine Captain Winters and a counter-boarding party after a Tholian, a warrior-caste Tholian, had beamed aboard during a harrowing fight with Senior Chief Solana.

oO Override security and open the doors without explosives? Nooo, no, not flashy enough... Oo
He smiled ruefully.
oO Marines and their toys. Oo

Affixed to Evinrude's belt was a small thermos, filled with fresh-pulled espresso from the Brew Continuum. He unclipped it, poured a shot into its lid-cup, and downed it with one sudden movement. It was time to stop staring at the myriad fires and start putting them out.

Evinrude: =/\= Lieutenant Evinrude to Ensign Delphina Wren. =/\=

Despite how tired he felt from the quick-turnaround shift change (and lack of sleep in between), his voice was polite, even friendly over the comm channel. He'd used her full name as a point of formality, since this was the first time he would be interacting with the relatively new crewmate.

Wren: =/\= Response =/\=

Too late, it occurred to him that the full-name use might have come across as a reprimand.

Evinrude: =/\= As you were, Ensign... =/\= ::He said amicably.:: =/\= I understand you have been made available by Chief Tucker to assist with the gel pack problem on deck ten? =/\=

Wren: =/\= Response =/\=

He picked up on some manner of nervousness in her tone, and didn't want her to think she was late. Downplaying the fact that he'd been here assessing the damage for several minutes already, on his own time, he replied.

Evinrude: =/\= Wonderful, I'll see you there. I have fresh coffee, and there's certainly time to replicate something else. Looking forward to meeting you! =/\=

Wren: =/\= Response =/\=

((Short Timeskip - Stellar Cartography, Deck 10, USS Ronin))

Tess looked up from the diagnostic scanner, and his bright green eyes met Wren's. With a smile, he took two steps forward and extended his hand.

Evinrude: Ensign Wren! Tess Evinrude, operations.

Wren: Response

((OOC: I'll be tagging Shortrith into this scene in a sim or two, to loop in whatever gel pack-related malfunctions are also affecting their counseling/medical domain!))
