to USS Ronin – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG

((OOC: This scene got a bit confusing with two different comm calls coming into the scene at the same time. I’m just putting them in the order they came in, but they might need to expand with additional sims.))

((Life Sciences Lab, Deck 10, USS Ronin))

The doors opened with a quiet hiss.

V’Len Kel entered, looking dashing as ever and and now with a row of three solid pip’s on his collar. Beside him a woman, Human perhaps, with Lieutenant pips entered.

Rhodium stepped forward smoothly, a hint of a bow in her movements. Her eyes sparkling warmly as she looked from Kel to the newcomer.

Kel: Lt. Serin Velis please meet Lt. Rhodium Wells.

Wells: Commander. ::giving Kel a nod, then holding out her hand to Velis:: And nice to meet you Lieutenant.

Velis: Response

Kel:  Any guesses what what's going on Lt. Wells?  You have pretty good intuition.

The El-Aurian’s smile widened a little.

Wells: Only speculation. We are eager to hear what mystery you have brought us. I suspect you are here with something far more interesting.

Kel: ::smiling:: I think you'll like this one, we've recently had a related experience.

Velis: Response

Wells: We are ready to investigate, Planetary survey, long range data collection and analysis and exobotany are on duty today, along with your skillsets we have an excellent team of specialists at disposal. Where would you like us to start?

She discreetly clasped her hands behind her back and crossed her fingers. Hoping that Fraslil and Lyrik would contain themselves now that their CO was here.

Kel brought up a blurry image of…something. Wells tilted her head to study the image. It had elements that appeared pod or seed-like to her, but the details were largely obscured.

Kel:  Presently we are rushing toward this large and unknown cosmozoan life form.  Several ships have tried to approach with no luck, now it's the Ronin's turn.  What can you add Lt. Velis?

Velis: Response

Rhodium felt an almost electric tingle in her cells at the mention of a cosmozoan life form.

Wells: Ah, another like Millie? Or something in the same vein and larger perhaps.

On a previous shoreleave Rhodium and Kel had discovered and accidentally caused a Star Jelly seed to hatch onboard the Ronin, and then half the science department had been required to get the juvenile off the ship and to a nearby planet before there was a hull-breach. The creature had absorbed some of Kel’s exotic energy in the process and as a result they were still connected somehow. Rho could sense a thread of connection stretching from the Trilldorian and oddly enough herself, reaching across space and time to the strange alien child they had helped. But whether that instance was in any way related to this, she had no sense of. The mystery was intoxicating.

Kel: During my first mission on the USS Thor I was able to communicate with a cosmozoan life form by converting it's magnetic oscillations into a holographic construct via the bioneural gel packs.  ::turning to Frasil and Lyrik:: I'd like you to set up a the same sort of collection mechanism. It's a long shot, but at least it's a start.

Kel transferred something to Lyrik and Faslil’s stations. Rhodium launched a slow smile, with a slightly wide eyed stare towards the pair. A reminder and a subtle threat to keep working nicely with each other.

Wells: Try not to set anything on fire this time.

Then she turned back to their guest.

Wells: Have you had any encounters with cosmozoan or other large space phenomena, Lt. Velis?

Velis: Response

In the background, Fraslil abruptly became very focused on his console while Lyrik straightened and nervously tapped his claws on the edge of his station.

Evinrude: =/\= Evinrude to Commander Kel. Have a moment? =/\=

Kel:  =/\= Kel here Lieutenant.  How can I help? =/\=

Evinrude: =/\=Thank you, sir. I am aware that we made good speed to the rendezvous with the USS Goodall. Operations work team reports are coming in, and we're looking ship-shape and ready.

Kel:  =/\=That's excellent news. The ship will need to be in good shape for this mission.   =/\=

Evinrude: =/\= Well, that's my question. Where are we needed for the, ah, mission at hand? If, that is, I'm authorized to know. ::He added genuinely, aware of the air of secrecy.::

V'Len considered.  They were all headed to the same place and Niac had not ordered him or any of the other command staff not to talk about it.  He sent the coordinates to Evinrude.

Kel:  =/\= We're heading for a contact with a large ::beat:: very large life form.  I'm having my people make some slight modifications to a few of our sensors.  Also make sure our defensive systems are ready.  There's a chance we're not the only ones who'd like to meet this creature. =/\=

((OOC: Comm call might expand with additional sims. Wells is more focused on the conversations in the room here. Full dialog tags in Kel, Evinrude and Beck sims.))

Turning to Velis while Kel conversed with the Ops department, Rhodium transferred the image to the main holographic pit. Replacing the image of Lolagi IV’s glowing oceans with an odd blur.

Wells: Computer. Extrapolate the 360 details of this scan. Try to clean up the interference, strip out the background radiation and the starfield. Enhance for me, cherie.

She flourished the air with a hand and then looked with interest at the results. It was still a mess. She looked to Velis.

Wells: Anything additional data you have to clear it up?

Velis: Response

She nodded, it wasn’t much clearer, but she could at least start helping to classify and rule things out. She walked around the shape. It was long, tubular, tapered at one end like a torpedo, but the interesting detail came from the other end.

Wells: ::fascinated:: Now this is interesting. What do you make of these two dorsal points coming from the taper? Does it remind you of anything?

Velis: Response

No sooner was Kel finished with one call than it seemed another officer was calling him. This time the Chief Medical officer.
Beck: =/\= Beck to Kel. Just finished putting together my shortlist, and it's very short. Doctor Shortrith and I will be at your disposal. =/\=

Kel: =/\= Response =/\=

((OOC: Rhodium, while normally one to nosely listening in is more focused on Velis and the mystery at hand, condensed tags.))

Continuing her circling of the hologram from the emitter, Rhodium glanced at the other woman, her grey eyes drawing almost silver with wonder.

Wells: Does this remind you of anything, chèrie?

Velis/Kel: Response

Wells: ::nodding:: The first time I saw this shape was France, Sol III, more than four-hundred years ago. It was in the hands of my grand-mère. She liked to twist her own yarn for knitting and she could crochet the most elaborate and beautiful lace…::making a twisting motion with her hands:: It's a Spindle. Or more scientifically a Fusilform. The spindle shapes occur in nature and in manufacturing often. Sperm, seeds, nuts, leaves, nests, fish and amphibians. A spindle cell is often found in tumorous tissue, both benign and malignant.

Velis/Kel: Response

Wells: ::stretching both arms above her head, before resting her hands on her hips:: Well, if it is similar to a giant single celled organism, I do hope it’s not a cancerous cell. Who knows what sort of offensive or defensive capabilities it might possess at this scale.

Velis/Kel: Response
