((Stellar Cartography, Deck 10, USS Ronin))
Around then, some fresh data from the Flight Deck poured into their observation feeds. The black box had been found, but a rescue operation may now be required as one of the shuttles, the Shinano, had vanished.
She quickly reviewed the logs and it looked like the Shinano was one of the small armada of shuttles Singh had out there searching the wreckage.
Solana: Good news, we have the black box but now we’ve got a missing shuttle. The Carl Sagan is bringing us the box but the Shinano is no longer on sensors.
Jenta cracked her knuckles out of frustration but refrained from reaching for her knives again.
Esot: At least there was no accompanying explosion this time?
Dekas: Response
T’Fearne: ::turning back to the console swiftly:: I’m checking their last position and status before they dropped off our sensors. This interference is making the reading appear faulty.
Solana: As much as I’d be the first to volunteer to go after them, we need to focus on getting the black box in here and studying it. The bridge will no doubt be focused on recovering the Shinano from that hole in space.
Esot: The chroniton levels grow exponentially the closer you get to the hole - I wonder if it isn't just interference, but the particles literally affecting the flow of time? Functionally the same as a black hole. ::frowning:: But black holes are, quite literally, very large, and we would be able to see the Shinano at the event horizon.
Dekas: Response
The Security officer leaned forward, focused on her task, which prompted the Operations officer to do the same. She made her way back to the chair in front of her console, sliding into it and pursing her lips as she synced the Shinano's last known flight path with the rest of the simulation.
T’Fearne: You're right. We have to figure out as much as we can. Treat this like any critical investigation. I’ll keep working on reconstructing Kurosawa’s flight data.
Solana: =/\= Stellar Cartography to the Carl Sagan. As soon as you’re in range, beam the black box directly here. We’re awaiting your transport. =/\=
Sagan: =/\= Understood, Senior Chief. We’ll be in range in two minutes. =/\=
Esot: I'm not sure how much this can tell us, but it looks like the Shinano was the closest runabout to the anomaly when it disappeared. There are one or two shuttles that were approximately the same distance, but they had no interaction with the black box or any other Kurosawa debris.
Dekas: Response
Jenta looked to the others.
Solana: We should make use of the overlays we have to assist the bridge and the other shuttles in locating the Shinano, I imagine piping the feed of what we have here to the bridge science station would suffice?
T’Fearne: ::slightly distracted data:: Commander, did you have a subspace call with the Kurosawa a few days ago?
She blinked a few times, curious where the question had come from, but she looked over at Dekas, allowing him to answer.
Dekas: Response
A moment later the thrum of a transporter beam filled the room and within moments the blue shimmer of light that appeared at the designated spot on the right of the room faded and sitting there was the vibrantly red black box. The coloration was a holdover from old Earth aircraft and nautical vessels, so they would be easily spotted visually. A silly thing since it was useless in space but handy when a shuttle or starship crashed on a planetary body.
The casing of the black box itself was rough to say the least but what struck her was that parts of it almost looked like it had been floating in space for centuries.
Solana: In Yar’s name. That thing’s taken a beating. Is it just me or does it look old?
Esot: It isn't just you. What I find intriguing is the asymmetric nature of it all - as if different sections were being buffeted with different levels of chronitons at any given moment.
Dekas: Response
T’Fearne: Jenta. You said before that the presence of chronitons here meant that time could have passed differently for the Captain and Raga? Correct. Esot, look at the temporal reading of the black box and the core. What do you make of that?
She noted the Cardassian pursed her lips and wondered what it would take to make her grin.
Esot: They have certain similarities. There, and there. Those chronitons I would say were formed within hours of each other, if not minutes. That looks like the largest collection of chronitons as well.
Solana: So, does that mean that they’re from two different events? Temporal mechanics always made my head hurt.
Dekas: Response
T’Fearne: I don’t want to alarm anyone or falsely raise hopes, but I think we need to make a subspace call…now…to the Kurosawa.
Jenta looked T’Fearne’s way almost the same moment Jino did.
Solana: Why?
Dekas: Response
T’Fearne: I don't want to give false hope. They may yet be alive, in the now. If so, we might be able to change their fate. ::pointing at the core:: The readings say this device is out of temporal sync with us. It's not our Kurosawa's computer core.
Esot: That's a rather bold assumption, Lieutenant. I am not entirely convinced by your argument.
Solana: I’m inclined to agree with our resident dour Ensign. I really don’t want to have those two damned TA agents back on board again. Took weeks for me to stop terrifying crewmen in turbolifts by drawing my knives every time the doors opened.
Dekas: Response
T’Fearne: If the interference is blocking a subspace call, I recommend retreating to a safe distance from the anomaly and at least trying to contact the Kurosawa.
Esot: I feel the need to mention the possibility of violating the Temporal Prime Directive with this particular communication. We have no proof that isn't our Kurosawa - mainly supposition, though it is, admittedly, based on the evidence we have.
Solana: It’s a good point, Ensign. There’s also that headache inducing possibility that us calling the Kurosawa could be what caused the temporal nonsense to begin.
Dekas/T'Fearne: Response
oO So she can smile. Well, maybe a Vulcan would call that a smile. Oo
Esot: I would suggest we should at least discuss it with Captain Kel before any hasty action. I don't believe any of us would be able to direct the Ronin's location, in any case.
Jenta pulled her tricorder and had been scanning the black box while they’d been discussing whether or not to contact the Kurosawa.
Solana: Correct. Acting Captain Kel would be the one to make the call. Or Acting XO Tucker.
Dekas/T'Fearne: Response
Esot: In the meantime, I am transmitting our findings to the Bridge, as well as access to the simulation we have been building. That may allow them to find the Shinano more quickly - I believe we have pinpointed the exact spot where it disappeared.
Solana: These readings are…odd. They’re not matching up the way they should.
Dekas/T'Fearne: Response
Evinrude: =/\= Evinrude to...science. ::His voice grew a little impatient, but not angrily so.:: To...anyone in Stellar Cartography!
Solana: =/\= Go ahead, LT. We’re listening, so take a breath. =/\=
Evinrude: =/\= ::At their response, he slowed his breathing, and smoothed his tone.:: Not to rush you, but have you cracked into the flight recorder yet? We may have good news.
She could hear Marty’s voice in the background over the comm slightly.
Tucker: Is it me, or is that a coaxial warp drive? I’ve read about them but never seen one before. This could explain a few things.
Nemes/Singh: Response
Solana: =/\= Not yet, we’ve been preoccupied with other observations and these scans aren’t matching up. What’s the good news? =/\=
Dekas/T'Fearne/Esot: Response
Evinrude: =/\= Right, so even though some version of the Ronin has lost their commanding officers, ours could still be out there. Let us know when you unravel the version of the recorder that found us...I hope it helps us find our missing crew. Evinrude out. =/\=
That made Jenta look back at her colleagues. “Some version of the Ronin?” The Orion gestured towards the data cable on the counter nearby so they could connect the black box to the computer to begin downloading the data once she was able to get to the access ports.
Solana: Some version of the Ronin? The version of the recorder that found us? This isn’t from our Kurosawa. ::she nodded to herself:: That explains why the variance is off so much on this thing. So, we just watched another versions of all of us’s Captain and XO die horribly. Yar, I hope that there’s not another Ronin somewhere that saw ours go out the same way.
Temporal mechanics and alternate universes had been experienced so many times, mostly thanks to the beard universe as some called it. Mirror for most. That every Starfleet Officer and even enlisted had to take tests about both. It was a nightmare of a Gordian Knot of possibilities and things that could go wrong or be possible.
Dekas/T'Fearne/Esot: Response
She set the tricorder on the floor and drew one of her curved knives from the small of her back. A subtle adjustment to the button on the hilt and the blade began to glow white hot after a few moments. The Orion then proceeded to carefully pry the casing off the black box. Which popped loose with far less effort than she had expected. The panel cracked in half when it hit the floor.
Solana: I really hope the data cores aren’t as geriatric as the rest of this thing is. ::she plugged in the data cable to the data port:: Alright, at least it connected. See if you can download the recorder data.
Dekas/T'Fearne/Esot: Response
Jenta moved back to her previous console and looked at the data as the others retrieved it. As feared, a lot of it was badly corrupted or degraded.
Solana: Some of the files in the black box match the ones the Captain…well, a Captain Niac transmitted. Should let us fill in some of the blacks from what we were able to get from that burst transmission of his.
Dekas/T'Fearne/Esot: Response
Jenta noted that even some of the Kurosawa’s computer files were still intact. Not things related to its final moments but what would have been in the data core. A historical file caught her attention because she didn’t recognize it.
Solana: Hmm, I found a fragment of a historical file. Don’t think it’s related to anything but it adds to the evidence that this wasn’t our Kurosawa. Something about a Delta Alliance between the Federation, Klingons, Romulans and the Dominion to face some threat from the Delta quadrant. The file’s too damaged to get more. So we know that wasn’t our people….so how does that help us find our people and stop whatever calamity they were warning about?
Jenta snorted in disbelief and was glad that Osiris wasn’t present. The big cat had survived the war with the Dominion. For that matter, she was also glad Kiran wasn’t there either.
Dekas/T'Fearne/Esot: Response
((ooc note: The Delta Alliance is a deep pull from beta canon from Star Trek Online and isn’t part of ours or prime canon. Just referenced it to add to the fact that this Kurosawa wasn’t from our universe.))
