((Transporter room, Deck 4, USS Compass Rose))

The hours since his team had started distributing their treatment had flown by in a blur of unspeakable horrors he'd never quite manage to unsmell combined with the thousand details that now needed to be addressed in the aftermath of their near disaster.  Priority One subspace communiques had to be dispatched to Starfleet Command and Starfleet Medical explaining what had happened, Starfleet Security needed to dispatch a vessel to tow their captured prize the Exsanguinator and strip it for Consortium secrets while their best interviewers sat with Doctor Sratta, the architect of the monstrosity they'd barely defeated.  Two ships had to be managed, their crews treated at speed, and what few survivors of the Rose there were had to be given the highest priority of care.

He'd established a temporary command post out of the Medusa, where fabrication of additional batches of the treatment were ongoing, and had been alerted by the Ronin of an incoming shuttle that wasn't responding to hails.  Sensors reported it to be the Jonas Salk, a shuttle that had escaped the Rose and which was subsequently intercepted by Major Singh's people shortly before Lt. Cmdr. O'Connor had beamed aboard.  He'd only been able to speak to Chief Tucker about it briefly but, from the sound of things, Ian had gone to help a friend who would've been beyond help.  What was aboard that shuttle now was anyone's guess.  He'd jogged from his command post to the Roses transporter room where they were, for the moment, trying to direct any recovered infected so they could get the treatment as soon as possible.  In his haste to bring a batch of the newly produced treatment with him he nearly bowled over poor V'Len, who looked like he'd aged several years over the course of the last day.  Based on what little Karrod had seen since boarding the Rose, he couldn't blame the man.

Kel:  Captain.

Niac:  Commander.  Do we know the condition of the pilot?  The Ronin said they're not responding to comm but they came to a safe halt just inside of transporter range.

Kel:  I've no idea.  I just got here myself.

Karrod noticed that V'Len had come equipped much as he had, with enough of the remedy to treat a dozen crew.  He nodded a bit sheepishly as he glanced towards the specialist manning the transporter console.

Niac: Better over-prepared than under.  Although the universe seems to enjoy making a mockery of our plans.

Kel: It's been a day.  I'll say that much.

Karrod nodded to the specialist and a few moments later the shimmering beam gave form to Lt. Cmdr. Ian O'Connor, standing stunned with his antenna nearly flat against his head, dripping with a rancid ichor and swaying on his feet.  Karrod was already moving as V'Len spoke.

Kel: ::gasping::  Oh no.

Karrod barely got there in time to catch the man as he tumbled back, his knees buckling and his half lidded eyes fluttering.

Niac: Hang on Ian, we've got you...you made it back...

Karrod tried to push the stench out of his mind as he held the insensate man, looking to V'Len for direction.

Kel:  Commander O'Connor?  Ian?  Can you hear me?  ::looking at Niac:: He's in shock.

He knew the signs of shock well but this horror was far beyond that simple diagnosis.

Niac:  I don't think there's a word for what he is right now, V'Len.  Hit him with the anti-viral, there's no doubt hes been exposed in close proximity.  Ian...Commander.  We're going to help you.  Stay still..that's an order.

Some small measure of training or reflex pushed his voice through the fog and Ian slackened back enough for V'Len to push a hypo against his neck.  A moment later Karrod felt the man grow heavy as he lost consciousness entirely.

Kel:  He's asleep ::beat::  for now.

Karrod glanced down and had no choice but to consider what the young man must have experienced in the last few hours.

Niac:  Tucker said he beamed aboard the Salk because he knew the pilot.  Couldn't be talked out of it.

Kel:  Response

Karrod shook his head to try to untangle the collision of emotions in his mind.  Sadness for his people and for the lost on the Rose.  Frustration that they hadn't arrived in time to save more.  Anger...fury...at the Consortium for what it had done.  All of that and more played out in him as he gently laid Ian on the transporter pad and stood, the front of his spoiled uniform tunic coated in the dank viscous fluid that were the mortal remains of a Starfleet officer.

Niac:  We should...we should transport him back to the Ronin.  Better he wakes up in our sickbay...familiar surroundings.  For all the good that'll do.

Kel:  Response

Karrod breathed out, imagining this same horror playing out all over the Rose.  How many had seen friends and loved ones mutilated and destroyed?  How many would physically recover without ever being able to tackle the mental scars?  His fury at the Consortium redoubled.

Niac:  I'm not sure what else we could do for him.  I've already asked Starfleet to get Division 14 involved...they're the only specialists even remotely setup to deal with something...on this scale.  But it'll be a while before they can mobilize.

Kel:  Response
