((Arboretum - Beta Module - DS33))

Reporting to her department CO in the tranquil setting of the Arboretum, T’Fearne took in the human woman whose orders she was to follow, hoping to find not only a leader but a role model.  To her surprise, the Commander was around her own age—a fact that contradicted her expectations of someone much older. Yet, the being looking back at her out of the brilliant green eyes seemed to carry the weight of many lives.

As they exchanged a firm handshake, T’Fearne experienced a fleeting, bewildering brush with the woman's empathic aura. On the surface, she thought she tasted feathery delight, an iron bedrock of determination, but run through with a corrosive web of …despair.

Suppressing her initial emotional reaction with a quick blink, T’Fearne wished her Betazoid abilities were either sharper or nonexistent; even the most nuanced readings could be more misleading than enlightening.

Carpenter: I've got your Call to Orders file. Anything on that that ain't on here?

The Commander’s tone suggested she was probing for additional details—perhaps a test of sorts.

T’Fearne::: Slightly hesitant:: I do have some additional skills that are not officially listed in my Academy records. I’ve trained in Tassa'Akai and spent time observing on and off-world mediation settlements with the Betazed diplomatic delegation. I also dabble in botany.

Carpenter: Yeah, you an' me are gonna get along just fine, I think. ::she peers down to her own PADD again:: Says here too, you can fly and completed Martial Combat Tactics? You have a specialty?

T'Fearne: Yes, Sir. I minored in helm operations, navigation, and shuttle combat tactics. :: breaking into a smile:: I really enjoy piloting shuttles. I even persuaded some of the transports to let me take the helm during my trip to the Alpha Isles. My combat specialty is close-quarters combat with blunt weapons, thanks to my Tassa’Akai training—essentially baton fighting. I was ranked competitively as a teenager on Betazed but have since adapted my style to meet Academy security standards. :: sheepishly:: I’m about average with a phaser.

Carpenter: Chief Rork and I have been settin' up some drills, urban insertion, breaching actions, boarding repelling operations, that sort of thing. Anything else you might want brushin' up on, we can make it happen. But I'll certainly find a place for you, talented as you are. You've got access to the Security Complex and it's trainin' holosuite. Just don't make me play den mother, yeah?

T'Fearne::: Nodding appreciatively:: That would be very helpful. I’d value the opportunity to adapt my skills to Ronin’s security division and learn the ship’s layout for optimal effectiveness. :: slanted brows darted together:: I’m unfamiliar with playing “Den Mother.” It sounds like a human game, Sir, so I won’t trouble you with it.

Her eartips tinged with a hint of embarrassment as she wondered why she felt the need to prove her talents when she hadn’t yet demonstrated them. The touch of their hands had conveyed the weight of the woman’s many experiences. Now, she was met with a warm smile as though she had said something amusing.

Carpenter: Think about it as an replanting. You're a good seed. Now I want to let you take root. ::she shook her head:: I'm not the best at metaphors, but you get it. Right? ::she said slightly nervous about maybe having ruined this already.::

T'Fearne::: trying to process the metaphor:: Thank you, Sir. Your way with metaphors is quite …vivid.

Carpenter: I think I come by it honestly. I grew up on a farm. I like to play that card when I can. 'Specially when I say somethin' stupid. ::ruefully chuckling.::

T'Fearne: I’m looking forward to being added to the duty roster. Is there a particular area where you’d like me to begin?

Carpenter:  RESPONSE

T'Fearne::: Nodding:: Earlier, I asked the Captain about potential security threats. I’d also like your insights on any specific threats I should be aware of in the Alpha Isles :: Pausing unsure:: …or aboard the Ronin?

Carpenter:  RESPONSE

T'Fearne: Understood. I’ll ensure to familiarize myself with these potential threats and integrate them into my security analysis.

Carpenter:  RESPONSE

T'Fearne: Thank you, Commander, for the warm welcome to the Ronin.

Carpenter:  RESPONSE

Taking a cue as a dismissal, T’Fearne spread her fingers in the classic Vulcan 1ta’al and turned to make her way out of the Arboretum. Planning to take the easy way to the security complex this time.
