((OOC: The end approach-eth! On the cusp of an agreement, I’ve pretty well closed off the tags on this scene, but I’ll get another one out in the next day or so with a final short scene that timeskips to the actual ratification of the agreement. For the rest of you, go ahead and work on winding down your scenes. I think it’s safe to say that we’ll be onto shore leave by the weekend!))
((Bridge, USS Resolution))
MacKenzie: I need to know details about these ‘medical and scientific advancements’ – what are you hoping to gain from the study of this particular planet that you can’t elsewhere?
Niran: We
believe that what is found can be used in many neurological disorders of our
people. Our preliminary research strongly suggests that the plants found on
Vionus can be distilled into a neural sheath of sorts in patients who suffer
loss of dopamine. This loss causes tremors and eventual paralysis of the
central nervous system. It….is not a pleasant way to die.
She paused for a moment, attempting to put together the logical path between where they were and where they needed to be. Finally, she spoke.
MacKenzie: Would there be any way you’d consider altering your projects?
Niran: If we could be allowed to continue our original research, we would be open to additional projects.
MacKenzie: I believe I’m starting to see a possible solution…
Ar-Dev: I will listen.
Addison attempted to stand before remembering the gravity had been altered, and firmly pushed herself back down into the Captain’s chair.
MacKenzie: The Federation has learned over its history that genetic manipulation can be dangerous with disastrous outcomes… ::she held up her hands to prevent anyone from speaking, sensing the Nascaik objection from lightyears away:: That having been said, I think you’re allowing your distaste and distrust of one another to cloud what may be an obvious solution…
She paused for a moment.
MacKenzie: The Thama are scientists, who are facing a medical crisis of their own, from the sounds of it. However, it sounds like their research may be the kind of thing that would lend itself well to helping the Nascaik find a more natural solution to their problem, without the use of genetic manipulation… It may not produce the immediate results you’re looking for, but it may very well produce a safer, more long-term solution to your problem…
As her gaze shifted between the two delegates, she could feel Sherlock’s attention locked on her. Given the colossal breach that left the Resolution with a hole in its side, Sherlock was likely providing a protective, watchful eye, as a doe watching over its fawn – ready to swoop in at the first sign of trouble.
Niran: If we were to agree to this, what are our assurances our assistance would not be confused with subservience to the Nascaik?
Ar-Dev: What would you say to a phased return of Oreg and Kalkimus as a show of… what is the Federation expression? Good faith?
Vey-Dex: The Thama could begin to return to these former places.
Ar-Dev: Yes, a small Thama presence initially, perhaps limited to 100 descendants of the original displaced colonists. There would need to be controls in place to limit their contact with the existing Nascaik settlers, lest... hostilities erupt.
Addison wasn’t sure if the systems had any importance to the Thama, but she was fully willing to concede that both sides were coming to the table with certain items they may be willing to give up in exchange for their desired outcome.
MacKenzie: We could all agree to a series of stipulations and oversight that would prevent that from happening…
Niran: Response?
Vey-Dex: But include the Nascaik.
Ar-Dev: We would still insist on observer’s rights to Vionus IV, but if the results of your research are satisfactory to our Scientific Corps, I think we would be content to leave administration of the planet to the Thama, and forego establishing our own settlement there.
MacKenzie: Likewise, the Federation may be willing to provide you with technology that may assist in your research. Given that you both appear to be facing existential issues, I am certain we can come to a solution that would work for everyone, without bias toward any particular party, the Federation included…
Niran: Response?
Vey-Dex: Noted. The documentation should not take long to draw up.
Ar-Dev: I have been granted wide discretionary powers to conclude an agreement with the Thama. I am confident that if we were to arrive at a mutually satisfactory solution, Unified Command would ratify it.
It seemed like maybe this entire thing would be a success after all.
Vey-Dex: If there are no arguments, I will begin the process of writing the agreement?
Sirin: With the Representative Delegates input, of course.
Malyk nodded.
Vey-Dex: Of course.
Addison waited for any other objections before a small, satisfied smile appeared on her face.
MacKenzie: Counselor Sirin, please work with the delegates to craft an appropriate agreement.
Before Meidra could respond, her commbadge chirped.
Adea: =/\= Adea to MacKenzie. Check your PADD =/\=
MacKenzie’s focus temporarily shifted to the device next to hear chair. She read Adea’s brief remarks – it appeared they had made a significant breakthrough but needed further assistance.
MacKenzie: =/\= I’ll send her down. =/\= ::to Niran:: Delegate, it appears our teams may have found a solution that will bring the rest of our systems back online, but they believe your assistance may speed up the process.
Niran: Response
MacKenzie: Ensign Sherlock, please escort Delegate Niran to Sickbay. ::to the group as a whole:: Once Niran has finished in Sickbay and you’ve all had a chance to work on the treaty, we’ll meet back here in several hours to ratify it.
Tag, and TBC!
