((Main Engineering, USS 'Oumuamua))
Shevon hadn't expected to meet the Chief of Engineering as she thought most of the crew was on shore leave, it was an unexpected honor. And though she herself was not assigned to the 'Oumuamua nor Deep Space 9, she kind of wanted to get her hands dirty. She was used to fixing things, that's all the
Delight was really, a constant repair job. And the 'Oumuamua wasn't looking much better.
Herrick: Are you a recent addition to the ‘Oumuamua? If so, I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you at first, things have been a bit… crazy onboard lately.
S. Sherlock: Uh ::beat:: no, I'm not assigned here. But maybe? I could ::beat:: possibly?
She still didn't know what choice she was going to make. She was sure Aine would be happy to have her on the 'Oumuamua...so she could watch over her like she liked to do. Thankfully her little sister wasn't an Engineer.
Herrick: oO Ah… so that’s where this nervous energy is stemming from. Angling for a posting. Oo
There was a pause from the Chief Engineer as he appeared to size her up. When their eyes met, Shevon just smiled enthusiastically.
Herrick: Well, permanent personnel assignments are out of my hand — usually that’s between Starfleet, the Captain, and the XO Etan. But, if that’s your desire, I don’t see why we can’t ‘test out the water’ while we’re here at DS9.
S. Sherlock: I'd love to!
Herrick: Do you mind if I do a quick lookup on you? Just to make sure there are no surprises on paper.
S. Sherlock: oO Paper? Like that note! Oo Feel free. There's not much to see, just pretty normal. Well, if you count growing up on a freighter normal.
"On paper," she figured, must have been a Terran expression. All she knew of paper was that, prior to seeing a note left for her sister, Terrans used it a long time ago. So she didn't know what papers he would be referencing.
Herrick: So… what gets you jumping out of bed in the morning?
S. Sherlock: ::innocently confused:: Well, I mean, my alarm can be shocking sometimes. But I don't really jump...
Herrick: ::smiling:: I meant… What are you passionate about when it comes to ::sweeping his hand around the engine room:: working on a ship or in engineering? Any areas of interest or specializations?
S. Sherlock: Oh! oO Another Terran expression! Oo Well, when I first enlisted, Starfleet classed me as a Repair Technician. At The School they said I'd be doing more on the administrative side, so they say Engineering Technician. But really, I just like to fix things.
Herrick: response
S. Sherlock: Pretty much my whole life. As soon as I could crawl, my father, well, the man who raised me, had me helping with his ship.
Now it was Shevon's turn to pause. One thing she learned since she'd joined Starfleet was that the people there loved to ask why each other were there. The others at the Warrant Officer School did it frequently, often sharing stories of their pasts. It built a sense of togetherness, she'd noticed.
S. Sherlock: What about you, Sir? What made you want to be an Engineer?
Herrick: response
