((Main Engineering, USS 'Oumuamua))
S. Sherlock: Oh! Well, when I first enlisted, Starfleet classed me as a Repair Technician. At The School they said I'd be doing more on the administrative side, so they say Engineering Technician. But really, I just like to fix things.
Herrick: Well ::patting the side of the console in front of them:: You definitely have no short supply of that here at the moment. She needs some love.
Shevon strained a confused smile. Love? The ship? Another expression, it had to be. Sure she'd heard of ships referred to as "she" before. Others on the
Delight called it that all the time. But she never heard any of them giving the ship love.
Herrick: It sounds like you had some good experience coming in then.
S. Sherlock: Pretty much my whole life. As soon as I could crawl, my father, well, the man who raised me, had me helping with his ship.
Another slight lull in the conversation; Josh suspected she might be reliving a memory. After a moment, she threw the ball back in his court.
S. Sherlock: What about you, Sir? What made you want to be an Engineer?
Now it was Shevon's turn to pause. One thing she learned since she'd joined Starfleet was that the people there loved to ask why each other were there. The others at the Warrant Officer School did it frequently, often sharing stories of their pasts. It built a sense of togetherness, she'd noticed.
Herrick: Family as well… actually, really my dad too. He’s a commander back at Utopia. He’d bring me along on the ‘safer’ repair missions when my mom had enough ::grinning:: and he made Starfleet a strong influence in my life. He even had me in a prep troop about 15 years ago, Future Explorers, Present Friends was our motto.
S. Sherlock: So like me, you like to fix things. That's great! But, Future Explorers, what do they teach?
It was something she wasn't familiar with whatsoever. Her sister always did warn her that the galaxy was a big world and that Shevon had seen so little of it. And despite having spent a year on 118, she felt like she still knew so little about it.
Herrick: Exploration. I too have a knack — a talent — for repairs so an engineering discipline seemed like a natural fit for me to get on a vessel and see the galaxy. It’s been a wild ride in the months that I’ve been here. I’ve been on 2 missions and had 2 first contacts.
S. Sherlock: That's impressive. I've heard some people go their whole lives without having a first contact.
Herrick: I’m just glad, I’m on some deep space science vessel, I feel I might get bored outta my mind. What speed did your freighter go?
S. Sherlock: Oh, it was slow. Very slow. Warp six. Technically the
Delight could go warp seven, but it rarely was running at max efficiency.
Herrick: So how'd you pass the time on runs?
No one had asked her something so personal about her life on the Delight, not even her sister. She was a little surprised.
S. Sherlock: Ummm ::beat:: other than fixing things, I used to learn traditional Orion dance.
Her lips pulled back slightly in a little cringe, remembering that most outsiders only knew of Orion dance as a seduction method. The truth was, within their culture, it had a far greater importance. She hoped the Lieutenant would think that.
Herrick: Really?! Well you’ll have to teach me some time. (beat) So… Shevon Sherlock… oO Sherlock… wait a minute Oo Are you related to our Sherlock?
At least he seemed open minded about the dancing, but now she was a little nervous. She didn't know how well he knew her sister.
S. Sherlock: ::nervously:: Yes, well, kinda. I mean, we are, sorta...
Herrick: response
S. Sherlock: ::taking a deep breath before continuing:: We're half sisters. Same father. But, I've never met him.
Herrick: response
S. Sherlock: Well, that's a long story, kinda. Her boy ::beat:: her friend's ship picked up our distress call. We'd been attacked and the ship was dying and they rescued us. Apparently she thought I was a creation of someone called Cloq?
She waited to see if that meant anything to him, but likely it wouldn't. It still meant almost nothing to her.
Herrick: response
S. Sherlock: No, I wasn't. She later told me that she asked our dad about me. He didn't even know I was born, but he did admit that he hadn't told her that he was in the Merchant Marines before he and her mother got together.
Herrick: response
