Sometimes, to prevent further damage, it was necessary to ask certain commanders to look away so that their blood pressure wouldn't rise too much.

S. Sherlock: =/\= Ummm ::beat:: not to make anyone worry, but, uh, we're still in the pod. =/\=

Herrick: =/\= It would be nice if we make it tomorrow Thunderbird! =/\=

It would be fair to assume that Sherlock (both of the siblings) and Herrick; 's blood pressure was likely rising somewhat

Nilsen: =/\= Standby, we’re working on it. =/\=

Arlill : =/\= I have to reset the targeting system, it’s attempting to auto lock and won’t release the locks once captured. =/\=

Lhandon’s blood pressure is certainly rising, Toxin’s is likely on par. Lhandon wasn’t going to show it.

S. Sherlock: =/\= Oh! Ok! Um, do we have to do anything? =/\=

Nilsen: =/\= Nothing for you to do Sit tight, your flight will begin boarding soon, please present your booking passes =/\=

Humour worked, as well as a deep breath in. His mouth had been dry and with the pod exploding above them in stages, it was nearly… nearly go time.

Arlill: =/\= I got it! Stand by. =/\=

Then silence. They waited for the transporter beam, Lhandon looked over at Arlill. He knew that look.

o0 Come on bro, you got this 0o

Meanwhile, the two passengers waiting to board talked to each other.

Herrick: ::looking over to Shevon:: They can do it.

S. Sherlock: ::almost too casually:: I believe you. I'm sure they got this. oORight?Oo

Herrick: =/\= Anytime now… =/\=

Rouiancet: Response

Again they spoke to each other and came up with a plan

Herrick: If these explosions are coming toward us, maybe we need to put more distance between us and them. The leaking plasma might be throwing off the targeting scanners. Turbolift?

S. Sherlock: Maybe we can…

Nilsen: =/\= Yo, Sherlock right, you’re Aine’s sister? ::laughs:: What’s the best way to annoy her? =/\=

S. Sherlock: Well, if you really want to get under her skin, you can always bring up the zipper inc…

Ah something to annoy Sherlo…the commander spoke

Rouiancet: Response

Nilsen: =/\= Trust me bro, tractor the pod. It should increase the signal strength and, keep us relative to the pod, like a train. I’ve had an idea, Commander, how long we got until the pod's destroyed? =/\=

Arlill: =/\= Do it! =/\=

Rouiancet: Response

Lhandon could hear the explosions through the comms. His fingers flew across the control panel as the tractor beam took hold of the mission pod.

S. Sherlock: =/\= Can we, uh, get out of here first? =/\=

Nilsen =/\= That’s not enough time when it blows it’s taking half the ship. I’m flying now. The tractor beam is holding. Sorry for the bumpy ride, we’re working on getting ya out.=/\=

Computer: =/\= Atmospheric Leak Detected, Emergency… =/\=

o0 well great 0o

S. Sherlock: =/\= Um, hey everyone, we, uh, have a big problem. We're about to go swimming in space. =/\=

Rouiancet: Response

Arlill: =/\= I got them! =/\=

But the party wasn’t over yet.

Nilsen =/\= I can’t pitch up. it’s weighing me down. I’m going to have to go with it. New heading. 000 mark 010. Straight on =/\=

Herrick: ::rubbing his forehead, and feeling a lump start to form:: Try to… sling it away.

o0 Frack Herrick, I love that! 0o

S. Sherlock: Too bad the pod doesn't have RCS thrusters you could remotely control…

o0 I love these two 0o

Rouiancet: Response

Arlill: =/\= Commander, can you pull up a remote connection to the mission pod and override the airlocks on the turbo life shafts? =/\=

Rouiancet: Response

Nilsen: =/\= I got this, Tox on your mark I’ll fire keel thrusters and you break the beam =/\=

Arlill: =/\= Wait for it (beat) wait for it. (beat) ::looking at Nilsen, who gave him a head nod:: NOW! =/\=

Lhandon fired the keel thrusters of Thunderbird 1 with a reaction time of milliseconds. Toxin  cut the beam. The internal dampers had taken most of the movement for the passengers, but they still needed a second to kick in, and they were briefly raised in their seat like the edge of a big dip of a roller coaster. They rose up above the pod as it passed under them.

Lhandon kept the keel thruster firing, making as much space between them and the pod as possible.

BOOM!

The mission pod exploded into a thousand million different pieces, creating a bright flash and a cacophony of bulkheads, hull plating, and EPS conduits. This firework display occurred just far enough away to give DS9 its own little show.

Rouiancet: Response

Arlill: =/\= Yes commander, it appears to have worked, well done. =/\=

Herrick: Well… ::looking at Shevon:: it seemed like we were saved just in time. ::looking to the front of the shuttle:: Thanks gentlemen.

S. Sherlock: Yeah. Thanks ::beat:: guys.

Nilsen: Any time

Rouiancet/Arlill: Response

Sherlock's sister, Sherlock patted both Nilsen and Arill on the shoulders.

Herrick: ::looking back to Shevon:: Sure I can’t convince you to join us? ::chuckling, followed by a light painful groan:: I’ll need a patch job myself.

Lhandon gave a look that said, "Are you alright?" and sent a subtle thumbs-up.

S. Sherlock: ::to Herrick:: Oh, no. I, uh, think I'll be requesting a ...another ship. I've heard the Butler will be a safe assignment.

Lhandon laughed. He couldn't imagine being on another ship now, just as Torka had said, he was of Oumuamua, and Oumuamua was his second home. He wouldn't have objected to flying the OEB. All the rumors suggested that the Segan classes were a blast to fly, and he was eager to try the foot pedals. However, the thought of transferring didn't sit well with Lhandon.

This is where he belongs

Besides, they weren’t going to transfer him now? right?

He instead, enjoyed this moment,

Rouiancet/Arlill: Response

Nilsen: Now, Sherlock, what’s this about a zipper? and can we annoy your sister with it.

End this scene for Nilsen

(later that day, 23:53 hr - Operations Centre, USS Oumuamua)

Lhandon had calmed down more or less. He was the last one left in the Operations Center. It wasn't a complete mess, but there were panels strewn about and wires exposed. As the lowest-ranked officer, Lhandon was asked to prepare the PADD, or at least get it ready for Toxin. He had agreed, as he needed a bit of quiet time.

He had switched on the table in the pit and brought up the last session that had been saved in memory. He had looked through the data and the sensor logs and found what he needed. He had then opened his PADD and sighed. His girl had been hurt, but she would survive. She could manage alright without the pod in addition to the other injuries she had suffered in the last mission.

He had gone to another console, there was no need to squeeze all the info into one display, he was curious, he had brought up the repair estimates from before the mission pod.

They had been ready for an extended shore leave while the Oumuamua was being repaired, it hadn’t been a bad start to 2401.

But then the damage from the mission pod was added to the estimate.

And his heart sank.

o0 frack 0o

Nilsen: I’m sorry old girl.

He returned to the pit and sat at the large table, stroking the surface as if he were reassuring the Oumuamua that everything would be alright. He was there for her.

He got to work on his report.

OC240101.18 SMR System Malfunction Report

Starship: [USS Oumuamua]

Stardate: [240101.18]

Location: [Deep Space Nine]

Reporting Officer: [Ens Lhandon Joseph Nilsen]

System Malfunction Details:

  1. Affected System:
    • Upper Sensor Dome
    • Forward Torpedo / Probe Launchers
    • Aft Torpedo Launcher and Magazine
    • Mission Specific Sensor Palettes
  2. Description of Malfunction:
    • Catastrophic failure of EPS conduits on Deck A lead to a chain reaction explosion.
  3. Timeline:
    • No operations systems detected the malfunction until the first explosion occurred.
    • Engineering detected a total power failure in the Mission Pod - Lt Herrick and WO1 Sherlock were dispatched to investigate.
    • First explosion occurred approximately five minutes after the power failure was detected.
    • Operations Centre was active at the time and registered the explosions. Cmdr Rouiancet, LTJG Arlill and Ens Nilsen responded. Attempts were made to shut down primary and secondary plasma distribution networks at the MARA. This was unsuccessful
    • Cmdr Rouiancet orders for the mission pod to be separated, Lt Herrick and WO1 Sherlock perform this successfully from inside the Mission Pod.
    • OC dispatches shuttle to beam out LTJG Herrick and WO1 Sherlock. LTJG Arlill (Ops) and Ens Nilsen (Helm) in command of shuttle
    • Beam out was successful despite challenges.
    • Mission Pod was tractored away from the USS Oumuamua where it exploded.
    • All crew members returned to the USS Oumuamua uninjured.

Impact Assessment

  1. Operational Impact:
    • Total destruction of the Mission Pod rending those systems unusable
    • The USS Oumuamua is still spaceworthy but the loss of the mission pod reduces the ship's operational capacities significantly.
  2. Safety Concerns:
    • The explosion was sudden and seemingly without warning safe for the reported power failure from engineering.
    • Safety protocols’ did not activate. A review is needed.

Diagnostic and Troubleshooting

  1. Initial Diagnosis:
    • Catastrophic failure of EPS conduits on Deck A
  2. Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
    • Shutting down primary and secondary plasma distribution networks at the MARA.
  3. Recommendations for Further Analysis:
    • Review of logs for further analysis to discover the cause of the EPS conduits failure

Repair Plan

  1. Immediate Repairs:
    • Repairs to the outer hull of the saucer section are required due to the damages caused by the removal of the Mission Pod
    • Inspections of the Catamaran section of the ship for structural damage are needed to identify any other damaged system
  2. Long-term Solutions:
    • Replacement of Mission Pod

Communications

  1. Internal Notifications:
    • Commodore Ossa V’Airu
    • Commander Etan Iljor
    • LTJG Toxin Arlill
    • LTJG Joshua Herrick
  2. External Notifications:
    • Starfleet Operations

END OF REPORT

After submitting the report, Lhandon placed the PADD on the ops table. He had known what that report was saying, he had known what he wrote. His heart felt heavy.

Nilsen: I’m sorry

He spoke again to the Oumuamua.

His mind hadn't considered the future, even though he heard through the ops grapevine that four new ships were going to join the Gamma Flotilla Expeditionary Task Force, and they would likely be transferred to one of them while the Oumuamua gracefully sailed away.

Lhandon sat, alone.

Maybe Starfleet wasn't for him.

His hand had gone to his chest, to the single pip, he had twisted it, it had rotated and loosened a little. He had thought about what he could do next. Where he could go.

Maybe he could race, there was still talk about the crew that got a Talaxian freighter through the invitation and into joint third, that would open doors.

He could go home, that idea sat well for him, there was no shame in just working the farm. Pa was there, so was Ma, and Marcus, the older brother would be there too, which made him smile.

The gold pip had twisted a little more. It had felt looser than it did before like it was willing to…

The doors to the OC had opened wide, he hadn't been able to see who it was right away, but he knew they were holding a cane.

Nilsen: Oh, hey, is that my cane? I wondered where it went.

Lhandon smiled, he was happy to see a friendly face.

Rouiancet: Response

He recognised Rouniancet's voice and stood up to greet her.

Nilsen: You know sir, I’ve managed most of the day, I don’t think I need it anymore.

Rouiancet: Response

Nilsen: Just some PADD work, I literally just submitted the report. How do you even put what happened today into one report like that? ::handing PADD over::

Rouiancet: Response
