((MFT Maximum Thrusters, Bridge, Currently Landed at the Temurian Outpost.))
Foster: Alright, make the adjustments to the probe to send out the correct signalling. Mi’sh, get ready to wobble like a radioactive meteor.
Ysatch: Right, let's void the factory warranty.
That was a phrase a professor from one of his engineering courses used for when you made major modifications to existing hardware that went beyond the original intent. He wasn't entirely sure what a warranty was. Some kind of Ferengi superstition, according to the computer.
He finished making the modifications to the probe's settings and then gave Mi'shune a thumbs up.
sh’Sonora: ::Clapped her hands together.:: Alright, now we’re talking! Let’s send our ::Air quotes, with fingers and antennae.:: ‘radioactive meteor’ out for a little sleuthing.
The probe's status indicator began to move as Mi'shune took it on its flight towards the minefield.
Foster: Slow her down a bit…
Ysatch: No change yet from the mines, I'll keep ... ::eyes widen:: ... collision alert!
What one moment ago was empty space now appeared to be filled with green-painted metal.
sh’Sonora: Holy frell… is that a… ship?!
Foster: Either a ship or an on-asteroid mining operation.
The ships sensors were being flooded with fresh data as the computer went to work matching what the probe was seeing with Starfleet records.
Ysatch: That's a ship alright. Computer is trying to get a match, but with all the dead zones, it's having a hard time.
sh’Sonora: ?
Foster: If there is a power signal, that means someone or something is watching. Can we back the probe off? Fly casual? Natural?
Ysatch: That thing was cloaked! The probe disrupted its cloak by proximity. Even if they don't notice the probe, they're gonna notice they're visible again.
sh’Sonora: ?
Foster: Keep a bead on it. I want to know if there’s any sort of power spike, any sort of movement.
Ysatch: So far it appears to be maintaining position, but if it ... ::interrupted by console chirping::
sh’Sonora: ?
Tori watched as the image coming in from the probe swayed and distorted as black void once again filled in the screen.
Ysatch: The vessel has recloaked.
sh'Sonora/Foster: ?
Ysatch: There are only so many ways to detect cloak ships ... uhh, that I know of. A tachyon grid seems out of the question since we're alone out here. Tetryon sweeps will give us a heads up when it decides to decloak, but that will only buy us a minute or two at the most. Probably less.
sh'Sonora/Foster: ?
Thinking about the grid gave Tori an idea. He quickly activated a ranging laser on the probe and aimed it at the asteroid the cloaked ship had been hiding behind. The numbers coming back were constantly fluctuating.
Ysatch: The ship is still there! It hasn't moved! As long as it doesn't destroy the probe, we'll at least get a heads up if the ship is moving from its current position.
sh'Sonora/Foster: ?
