((Keros’ Quarters-SB 118))

She put her small bag on her shoulders. Nothing but two uniforms and a handful of non-replicated snacks. Ivalyan hated replicated food, but there was going to be no avoiding it on a mission. At least the ship was new. The rest of the crew had been so excited for it, all she had cared about was one thing.

((Sickbay – USS Aurora-A))

Was the smell really there or in her head? She’d always heard about the new ship smell, but well…she’d never been on a new ship, had she? Tracing her fingers along the wall, it reminded her of moving as a child. A new section of forest, a new house, new discoveries to be made. With a grin, Ivalyan wondered if her old home on Antosia still had “IK ❤️ BX” carved on the trunk.

Squinting at her cracked PADD she took the route to Sickbay that would get her there the fastest. Let the others drool over the shiny metal and glowing screens.

Ivalyan: Computer? Lights p-please.

As the lights flickered on she was glad they’d have a skilled doctor aboard. While not austere by any means, it was definitely tighter than SB-118s.

oO Neophobia? No, cainatophobia. Or maybe just nerves, Keros Oo

The door hissed open behind her and she yelped and threw her PADD.

Ivalyan: D-Doctor? Oh, sten’d, I hope…I’m s-s-sorry for screaming.

oO Ryden-phobia? Oo

Ryden grinned, too polite to comment probably. He looked around the sickbay, HIS sickbay. Her head tilted, eyes glowing softly. He was taking stock of the room the same way she was sure Foster had taken stock of the ship. Proud.

Sylvax: It's going to be an adjustment.

Ivalyan: D-doctor?

It looked state if the art to her. What could they possibly need that wasn't here?

Sylvax: On the station, if we need something, chances are there's an entire room dedicated to it somewhere. ::He glanced around.:: Here, everything we might need has to fit inside a much smaller footprint.

Ah. Of course. Centuries ago, her planet had been consumed by war, a military dictatorship. She had heard stories of the rebels planning in back rooms, commanding from closets. Everything they had had to be able to be moved in a heartbeat. A lot like this, as a parallel at least. She winced at the thought.

oO Yes Keros, you’re just like the rag tag rebels of old, in your gleaming shiny medbay Oo

Sylvax: Computer, initiate diagnostic on primary medical systems.

Computer: Diagnostic initiated.

As Ryden was geeking out over the diagnostics, she looked around again. With surprise she saw a small office with counselor printed next to it. With a grin of her own, she opened the door and nodded. Modest, really a desk and two chairs. But it was hers, wasn’t it? She made some notes about a few decor items to make it feel restful.

Ryden glanced toward Keros.

Sylvax: How are the counseling facilities looking?

Facilities? Plural?

Ivalyan: Umm, let m-me see sir.

Sure enough another door opened to what looked like a small dorm room, likely for troubled patients, as well as a room for meditation and possibly religious ceremonies. Religions… she knew the Bajorans and even the Vulcans had their religions, but what about the rest of the crew? She really should know this.

Ivalyan: Looks fine to m-me, doctor. There’s n-not a whole lot of physical things  I n-need. There’s at least the containment b-bay, an office, and room f-for meditation? P-probably more but I haven’t looked m-much yet. Sir.

Ryden nodded as he listened, occasionally glancing toward the areas Keros indicated.

Sylvax: Anything you think we're missing, tell me now. Same goes for anything you want moved, replicated, or reconfigured before launch.

Ivalyan:  Yes, s-sir.

Sylvax: I'd rather find out something doesn't work for you while we're still attached to the station than when we're three light-years away from it.

That had a sardonic ring to it, clearly something he’d had experience with.

Sylvax: We should probably go through the whole department together. Medical stores, emergency equipment, isolation capability, counseling spaces. Make sure we're both happy before anyone declares this place ready.

Ivalyan: Okay, if you have a list of what you n-need ill help t-take stock.

Ryden gestured toward the room around them.

Sylvax: Shall we see what Starfleet gave us to work with?

Ivalyan: ::smiling:: Yes sir!

He was proud she realized. He was proud to be here, in his medbay, in Starfleet.

Sylvax: ?

Nodding she opened some cabinets, and looked at the contained equipment.

Ivalyan: And sir, just a rem-m-minder? Umm. I do have some m-medical training. I’m no surgeon, b-but i have a pair of hands and know which end of a hypospray goes w-where.

She was going to make herself useful. She was going to live up to expectations.

Sylvax: ?

Ivalyan bit her lip. He had been so brave during the last mission… So brave on shore leave with Tori.

Ivalyan: Sir, um, doctor? How many m-missions have you b-been on? And… Do you ever get sc-... nervous?

Sylvax: ?
