((CO’s Office, Deck 7, Command Center, StarBase 118))
the Bardeezan walked to the opposite side of the room and ordered a gunpowder tea from the replicator.
Fairhug: Would you like something to drink?
Bryce: Tea would be great, actually. Nothing too strong.
Drinks in hand, he walked back over and placed them on the desk, before sitting on the opposite side and leaning back slightly to get comfortable.
Fairhug: How are you settling in now that we’re back on the base?
She had mentioned something about her quarters not being decorated yet. Was that by choice? Or just because she hadn’t had a chance to add any personal touches? They hadn’t been back from Capricalia long, after all. Still, not everyone packed their quarters full of trinkets. His own quarters had always been spartan at best, until he had met Juryana, that was.
Bryce: I’m settling in well so far. It’s my first posting, so there’s a lot to take in, but that’s part of what I was looking forward to.
He lifted his tea and took a sip as he listened to her response. The hot liquid burned its way down his throat and into his stomach in a comforting way and he found himself relaxing further at the feeling.
Fairhug: Well, it takes time, of course. I hope your quarters are to your liking? If not, just let me know and we can arrange something else. ::pause:: Have you had a chance to look around the base much at all?
Bryce: They’re far more comfortable and spacious than I anticipated. I haven’t been here long enough to decide what I want to do with the decor, so they’re still a bit bare.
She took another sip of tea before continuing.
Bryce: I’ve taken a few short walks when I can. Mostly enough to learn where I’m supposed to be and not get lost on my next shift.
Gogi let out an amused huff of breath.
Fairhug: That’s a good place to start. It will take a while to get fully familiarised with a place like this compared to a ship, but on the other hand, there’s so much to do here. ::smiling:: I think you’ll like it.
He certainly did. He had only served on one ship in his career, as opposed to four installations/bases, so maybe he was biased, but bases always appealed to him more than the constraints of a ship.
Bryce: It was a very intense first day. I hope they aren’t all like that.
The Bardeezan raised his eyebrows as he sighed and leaned back in his chair slightly.
Fairhug: No. Thankfully not. In fact, most days are exactly like this. Nothing much happening other than the comings and goings of life in general. Of course, that can be interesting enough in a place like this, but it’s the days when you’re helping to resolve an interplanetary conflict or rescuing other ships from black holes that really tend to stick in the memory, for some reason.
He smiled warmly again, hoping that he had reassured the new recruit somewhat. Of course, they all knew what they had signed up for and they wouldn’t be Starfleet officers if they didn’t want to make some kind of difference. But even Starfleet officers needed a rest from time to time.
Bryce: Response
Fairhug: From what I heard, you stepped into a tricky environment with a somewhat difficult character and helped to convince him that Starfleet had been very badly misrepresented. Your impact may have helped shape the future of Capricalia and that region of space. Not bad for a first day, I think.
Bryce: Response
He chuckled, leaning forward to pick up and take a gulp of his tea.
Fairhug: We all say that. But it’s important to give yourself credit for a job well done. As a Counselor, I’m sure you know that better than most.
Bryce: Response
Fairhug: Speaking of which, why counselling?
The Counselor role was one that always intrigued Gogi. When people thought pf Starfleet, they usually thought of the science officers or the engineers, maybe the security personnel or the helm officers. But the counsellors were the unsung heroes, in his opinion. They were the ones who kept everything together. Without them, Starfleet would be a minefield of unchecked emotions and trauma. Whether she knew it or not, Ensign Bryce had her work cut out for her.
