(( Alok Munshi’s Quarters, Deck 830 North, Apartment 49A, Starbase 118 ))
The silence of Alok’s quarters was broken only by the quiet hum of his desk console running a final diagnostic on his schedule. He stood before his mirror, carefully adjusting the collar of a sharply tailored midnight-blue tunic with subtle gunmetal piping—a deliberate departure from his standard-issue Starfleet duty uniform, selected to strike the optimal balance between formal elegance and engineering comfort. His boots were polished to a mirror-like finish, reflecting the ambient light of the room. He smoothed down the fabric, running a mental checklist to ensure every personal variable was locked in place. Shore leave celebrations required a different kind of calibration, and Alok intended to arrive fully synchronized.
He tapped his commbadge, verified the time, and stepped out into the corridor, his mind already mapping the most efficient route to Deck 499.

Ryden Sylvax rounded the corner, adjusting the cuff of his charcoal suit for what was probably the fifth time in as many minutes. He'd debated wearing his dress uniform before ultimately deciding on something a little more comfortable. Now, on the way to the celebration, he was beginning to wonder if he'd made the right choice.
The familiar sound of footsteps approaching drew his attention.
Sylvax: Alok!
Alok felt a familiar, grounding warmth settle over him as he recognized the Trill physician. Over the past several weeks of shared meals, marathon strategy board games, and mutual post-mission venting, Ryden had quietly transitioned from a departmental colleague into his closest confidant on the station—the one person with whom silence didn't require an explanation.
Munshi: Ryden. I see your suit-cuff adjustment subroutine is still stuck in an infinite loop. Rest assured, the fabric is structurally secure.
Sylvax: Apparently we had the same idea... and the same timing.
Alok offered a dry, amused smile, falling seamlessly into step beside his best friend as they covered the final stretch of the corridor.
Munshi: Logically, if two individuals depart from adjacent habitat rings at precisely 1730 hours, convergence at the primary access node is a statistical certainty. Though I admit, arriving before the peak congestion window was an intentional variable on my part.
Ryden glanced toward the ballroom doors and chuckled.
Sylvax: If we're the first ones there, we can just pretend we were helping Foster set up.
Alok glanced at the closed double doors ahead, raising an eyebrow at the suggestion of leveraging administrative ignorance for social convenience.
Munshi: A deceptive optimization, Ryden. Though given Commander Foster’s penchant for dramatic flair, he would likely put us to work hanging floral garlands. Still, the risk profile is acceptable.
Sylvax: Exactly.
Alok walked stride for stride beside the Trill physician, his analytical mind quietly registering the rhythmic, synchronized cadence of their boots against the deck plating. Over the past several weeks, a rare social protocol had naturally established itself between them—one that required zero calibration or diagnostic buffering. Conversation with Ryden didn't carry the friction of social anxiety or the rigid constraints of department channels; it flowed with the effortless predictability of a well-optimized subroutine. Sometimes they exchanged complex technical tangents or shared mission critiques, and other times they simply moved together through the station's labyrinthine corridors in a quiet, undisturbed synchronization that felt remarkably like home.

As the ballroom doors slid open, both men instinctively slowed. The room beyond was stunning.
A polished wood dance floor stretched across the center of the ballroom beneath a collection of chandeliers, one magnificent centerpiece glowing like a small sun while smaller lights orbited around it. Rich maroon draperies framed the walls, intertwined with delicate white flower garlands that softened the formal space. Along one side, an enormous viewport overlooked the steady stream of ships arriving and departing StarBase 118. Opposite it, the bar and buffet stood ready for the evening, while a podium waited patiently in the corner for whatever speeches... or surprises... the night had in store.
Sylvax: Wow...
Alok let out a quiet breath of appreciation, taking in the warm, ambient glow of the chandeliers and the clean layout of the room. It actually looked like a proper venue instead of a hastily repurposed cargo bay, and he had to hand it to Foster—the man knew how to host.
Munshi: Yeah, you can say that again. Commander Foster really went all out. The place looks incredible.
Foster: Well hello and welcome!
Commander Shar'Wyn Foster approached with his trademark grin.
Sylvax: Commander. This looks incredible.
Alok shifted his posture into a relaxed, polite stance, letting a genuine smile show as he looked over the Andorian's vibrant moss-green vest.
Munshi: Evening, Commander. You've really outdone yourself with the setup. It looks fantastic.
Foster: Of course you're early! But you already knew that, right? And I opened the doors, so life is beautiful and you should come on in!
Ryden laughed.
Sylvax: We were actually trying not to be the first ones here.
Alok offered a quiet, concurring nod, casually adjusting his cuffs.
Munshi: Guilty as charged. We were aiming for fashionably late, but our timing apparently missed the mark by a few minutes.
Foster: Response(s)?
Sylvax: It's certainly kinder to our pride.
Munshi: Definitely. Though I suppose someone had to test out the dance floor before everyone else tracks up the wood.
Foster: Response(s)?
The three stepped farther into the ballroom together. Ryden admired the decorations once more, but out of the corner of his eye, Alok noticed his friend's gaze repeatedly darting back toward the entrance. It didn't take an empath to figure out what—or rather, who—Ryden was looking for. Alok had been following the wildly station popular, The McPotts Brief for a while now. If what was discussed in it was even half true, Ysatch Tori was the lucky guy Ryden was looking for. But Alok had made a note to self not to force Ryden to tell him, until he himself is ready to share that part, which he knew would be shared with him soon enough.
Alok nudged him gently with an elbow.
Munshi: You keep glancing at the door every time someone walks past, Ryden. If you're waiting for someone, you could always just message them instead of wearing a groove into the floor.
Ryden blinked. Before he could reply, the doors hissed open again.
Lyra stumbled in with an awkward smile.
Voss: Oh! Hello! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to… well, not that I wouldn’t want to come over and say hello - I just didn’t mean to shove in like that. But hi.
Alok felt his pulse hitch for a fraction of a second. Seeing Lyra walk in—her expression a mix of flustered charm and genuine warmth—instantly scrambled his train of thought. He quickly swallowed the sudden dryness in his throat, forcing his posture to remain casual while his mind scrambled to find a normal greeting that didn't sound completely idiotic.
Munshi: Hey, Lyra. You made it. Don't worry about the grand entrance—it fits right in with our early-bird arrival strategy.
Foster/Sylvax/Voss: Response(s)?
Alok subtly tracked the microscopic micro-expressions on Lyra's face, noting the slight relaxation in her shoulders as she realized she hadn't committed a major social faux pas. His internal monologue was running a frantic background diagnostic on how to transition from standard engineering protocols into casual small talk without sounding like a data-log entry.
Munshi: So... ah. How was your transit over? I imagine the lower deck corridors are running near maximum capacity by now given the party announcements.
oO Well that could have gone better. Oo
Foster/Sylvax/Voss: Response(s)?
