Once everyone was settled in their seats for dinner, the first course, a selection of savory hors d'oeuvres was brought out, paired with a selection of teas that ranged from light and mellow to bright and bitter. They were not sweet, but sweeteners were available on the table for those who liked them.
As guests gathered, Bissk Jevan bustled around excitedly, setting up his keynote speech, which would be the perfect climactic pause between the salad course and the main course. And then, just before dessert he would reveal his archaeological marvel.
It was a true orb, he was sure of it. Drained of power, he wanted to display what he had found before taking it back to Bajor as a hero. Maybe in a proper temple it could be filled with the power of the Prophets once again and restored to its full glory.
He was equally excited to share the story of where he found it – in the Serellian sector, which was a massive distance away from Bajor. It proved that the architecture of the ancient star sailing ships was tremendous.
As the hors d'oeuvres course moved to the soup course, Secretary Valeria introduced him and he stood up, smiling. He was a dark tanned man of wiry build, who looked like spectacles would fit his academic features perfectly. He had dark hair with sandy tips and a neat brown suit. He would look right at home in a dig site, if the tailored cut of his suit wasn’t quite so formal.
As the soup course moved into the appetizer course Professor Bissk started to tell tales about the Bajoran sailing ships. His voice was bright and his nerdery on this subject was tempered by a truly entertaining, storytelling way of talking that painted an interesting picture of ancient Bajorans braving the galaxy, guided by the Prophets.
If he only knew that unscrupulous sorts were also eyeing his treasure.
But Bissk was quite naive in such things. He knew that some people (like most Cardassians) were bad people and everyone else was probably a good person. It was a terribly narrow minded and dangerous view of the world, but Jevan was a sheltered sort. And tonight he wasn’t thinking about anything but what a wonderful story and fantastic thing to show everyone that he had.
Appetizers moved to salad and the story grew, hinting at the finding of an orb. Tantalizing the audience that he would show them this treasure.
He was so excited.
He had no idea.
Certainly everything would be fine!
