((USS Fantasia – Commodore’s personal yacht))
Heading back towards Raskor at a stately warp 1, Sal Taybrim was convinced that everything was fine.
Then again, despite fourteen years of Starfleet service, nearly ten of them in command of StarBase 118 itself, there were still things in the universe that surprised him. It was his job as a decent and humble man to admit when he was wrong.
Well, he was wrong.
Klex: Commodore… Sir… StarBase 118 is calling again.
The young Denobulan ops officer had been worrying about the situation on StarBase 118 since they first received word that something was wrong. Only Sal’s reassuring words had convinced him that they were right to continue forward.
And yet on the flip side they had slowed to Warp 1. They could turn around at Warp 6 and be back to StarBase 118 in under an hour if there was an emergency.
And maybe there was an emergency. It wasn’t like Lieutenant Yang to call twice unless there was something truly important.
Taybrim: =/\= Taybrim here, I read you 118. =/\=
Yang: =/\= Sir, Captain Fairhug is no longer onboard StarBase 118. =/\=
Klex’s mouth dropped open and he gasped an audible ‘what?!’
Sal on the other hand stayed calm. He knew that Yang would present the most important piece of information first and then offer explanations second.
Taybrim: =/\= Was Captain Fairhug abducted? =/\=
Yang: =/\= We do not believe so, Sir. We have determined that the energy emission has affected the memories of a significant portion of the crew and civilians of the Starbase. This throws them back anywhere from three to twenty years, where they cannot access large portions of memories. =/\=
That got Sal’s ginger brows to hike upwards. Yang took a breath and went forward.
Yang: =/\= We believe Captain Fairhug’s memory regressed to a point before his admission into Starfleet. He was last seen removing his commbadge and trying to board a civilian shuttle, telling the docking bay officer that he had to go ‘find his crew’ =/\=
Sal held back a chuckle at that. It was a shocking responsible train of thought for Gogi even if the actual action looked irresponsible on the face. If he had lost over a decade of memories his intentions were to get back to his former crew and continue the leadership from his former life. Which was all admirable and understandable.
Still, they would need to track him down. Sal was betting that Starbase 118 medical was already working on a way to reverse this.
Taybrim: =/\= Let me guess, because he’s the station commanding officer they allowed him onboard. =/\=
Yang: =/\= Yes, Sir. They thought he was on an undercover mission. We didn’t catch it until after they had already gone to warp. We’ve got a comms out and we believe he’s perfectly safe and sound, only memory-loss affected. =/\=
Taybrim: =/\= How widespread is this memory loss issue? =/\=
Yang: =/\= It’s affected a significant portion of the crew and civilian population; however certain species appear to be completely unaffected – notably Ferengi, Dopterians and Humans. =/\=
Ferengi and Dopterians made instant sense to Sal seeing that both were species with four-lobed brains. Humans made him wonder what the difference was. Sal had a science background, but it had been well over a decade since he had exercised it with any regularity. But if this was a known fact he was again sure that medical and science was already on it.
But that meany Sol was unaffected. Good. And Doctor Wethern. Also good.
Sal took in a long, slow breath and made the decision to turn around.
Taybrim: =/\= We will head back to StarBase 118, I’ll touch base with Director McLaren when I arrive. Keep trying to contact the shuttle we think Captain Fairhug is a passenger on, I would like to confirm he’s alright. =/\=
Yang: =/\= Yes, Sir. =/\=
The commline closed and Sal settled into his seat.
Taybrim: Well, Lieutenant Klex, you were correct. Turn us around. Fortin, fastest possible safe speed back to StarBase 118. I think we’ll be able to help ensure all is fixed with hopefully no long term effects.
Klex didn’t feel great about being right, but he was glad they would be able to help.
Fortin keyed in the coordinates and the Fantasia arced around, and then leapt to warp 6, zooming back home to StarBase 118.
