((Briefing Room, Deck 1, USS Narendra - En Route to the Achemar System))
Wyn had pointed out that the Capricalians had complained of pirate activity in the area. And he didn’t know of many people who liked pirates – except pirates. Wyn had some past run ins with pirates – none of them good. He might have gravitated towards the pirate part of the report, and as Gogi pressed forwards Wyn silently hoped his team would not be hunting for… you guessed it. Pirates.
Fairhug: That brings me to the next order of business. ::he sat down again and leaned his elbows on the table, pressing the button to make the holographic display disappear again, before steepling his fingers:: As I mentioned earlier, we will be splitting into teams in order to tackle the various issues at play here. ::he turned to look at Shar’Wyn Foster, specifically:: Commander Foster, I’d like you to take Lieutenant Ross and Ensign S’zurak to meet with Themem Zilo, the Capricalian Secretary of Commerce, to discuss his concerns and how we could address them.
Ok, a Secretary of Commerce. He could handle that.
S’zurak: Yesssir.
Ross: Responses
Foster: We’re on it. Anything else we should know about Zilo?
Fairhug: Apparently, previous requests for additional support have fallen on deaf ears. Please reassure him that, if they remain members of the Federation, that will not be the case going forward.
Oh, they were the complainers.
About pirates?
Probably about pirates.
S’zurak: Perhapss it wass mere missscommunication. Regardlesss, it will be ressolved. ::He looked toward Foster and Ross with a steady, unblinking gaze.::
Ross: Responses
Foster: I trust it will.
Fairhug: Speaking of additional support, Lieutenant Willow, I would like yourself, Lieutenant Wethern and Ensign sh’Sonora to liaise with Capricalian security and complete a patrol of the system, reporting back on any pirate activity you observe. They have insisted that you take one of their ships.
Oh, now there was a mission that had a high chance of pirates. Wyn wished them all luck – he liked Willow, she was a lovely person. He was good friends with Corey, and he quite liked sh’Sonora from his conversation with her. He didn’t want any of them to be ambushed by pirates.
Maybe he should get the pirates out of his brain. Not everything was pirates.
Willow: Given their level of trust toward the Federation at present, it is logical that they would be disinclined to have faith in the effectiveness of our technology. Control is given when we play the situation to the Capricalian advantage. Ultimately, we have a higher chance of success when we lean into individual, political and societal autonomy.
sh’Sonora: I’m guessing they inherited some of the old Empire’s equipment? I can fly it.
Wethern: I'm going to take a punt I suspect it will probably be the least defensive vessel with no coffee programmed into the replicator. What are the rules of engagement?
Oh wait, oh no. His antennae twitched, forseeing pirate doom, which he very much hoped would not happen. He had to believe in sh’Sonora’s piloting skills, willow’s security sense and Corey’s ability to keep everyone safe.
Fairhug: Do not engage unless in self-defence. This is reconnaissance, not a hunt. If you get into more trouble than you can handle, the Narendra will be nearby.
Willow: I will not go without weapons and tactical gear entirely. However, you know me, I act with words first and foremost. I will hold to that
sh’Sonora: Yes, Sir!
Wethern: I'll pack extra bioplasters.
Foster: Good idea.
He couldn’t help himself.
Fairhug: Commander McLaren, I would like you to take command of the Narendra for the duration of the mission. While we are in the area, Starfleet has received reports of strange occurrences in the nearby Phaethon Nebula. Lieutenant Kel and Ensigns Taylor and Voss will remain with you on the bridge to study the nebula.
Sol on the bridge of the Narendra? Nice. Wyn approved of that. With Taylor and Voss by Sol’s side he expected success, pirates or no.
Taylor: Aye sir.
Voss: ::excitedly:: What kind of strange occurrences, sir?
McLaren: I'd like to know as well.
Pirates.
Of course it could be Romulans, but Wyn was a bit fixated on pirates.
Maybe because Romulans had never tried to kill him and pirates had – twice – and nearly succeeded once.
Fairhug: The reports have included adverse effects on ships’ power systems and even hallucinogenic effects on ships’ crews, so be on alert.
Hallucinogenic?
He blinked at that. As the science officer, Voss would be busy.
Taylor: I am certain we will be able to figure out a means to protect the ship.
McLaren: We'll get to the bottom of it, :: she grined :: and I'll make sure to return the ship in one piece.
Fairhug: Commander Marsh, Ensign Zara, I would like the two of you to come with me. We will be meeting with Ozan Zirzal, the leader of the Capricalian.
Oooh, the important diplomatic role. Wyn had confidence in Marsh and Zara to back Gogi up.
Marsh: Of course, happy too.
Zara: Response
Fairhug: Unfortunately, the Federation has a lot to answer for in Zirzal’s opinion, so we will have to be on our diplomatic A-game. Understood?
That was probably the least-likely group to encounter pirates, though Wyn didn’t envy them. His short-lived time as a diplomatic officer was a mess.
Marsh: Yes sir.
Zara: Response
Fairhug: Very good. If there are no other questions, then you’re all dismissed to go start on your plans for the mission.
Wyn looked towards S’Zurak and Ross.
Foster: We’ll meet in conference room six to go over our team’s goals. I’ll meet you there in fifteen!
Pirates or no, they had a job to do!
