Madison grinned at the taller Risian woman. Haukea herself merely pondered further. The pair had been familiar, dating as girlfriends, for over a year, yet, having recently committed to living together, their relationship continued steadily onwards. Likewise, with Amar in their lives, a child of twelve, a significant commitment was to be made. For Haukea that brought forward the prospect of marriage, a significant event she wanted, yet could not commit to the timing. Though perhaps for now a mere promise could be held for the time.
All the time spent pondering, which wasn't long, Haukea had created and produced a shiny, delicate opalescent Risian pearl ring, left securely in the back of a drawer until now; the ring lay, without a box, in the pocket of her black puff vest. Fidgeting with the delicate object, Haukea spoke, Madison having announced her own commitment.
Eventually Haukea produced the ring from her pocket, holding it out to the other woman. She was certainly not down on one knee, the act a promise rather than proposal.
Marsh: What is a promise ring exactly?
Willow: I researched an old earth custom. Promise rings. I want to marry you. However the timing has never felt right. That said, with this ring, I, we, can commit to a long, stable relationship.
Madison provided Haukea with a furrowed brow, a sideways gaze. Both seemed unsure as to the other’s reaction, waiting patiently. Haukea certainly wished for a positive reaction, at least towards the ring’s design, having chosen it entirely on her own, completely guessing at Madison’s style preferences.
Marsh: I can commit to a long and stable relationship. We've already been together well over a year you know, so we have plenty of time before considering marriage.
Willow: If you don’t like it we can pick out a different one.
At first all Madison appeared to do was test the opalescent ring on her finger, holding her hand out for it to shine in the natural sunlight. Haukea herself smiled, pleased with her selection of jewelry; extremely proud when Madison reached out to hug her. Naturally the Risian being a touch seeking individual reciprocated the action, arms winding around the other woman.
Marsh: The ring is fabulous and I love you!
Willow: I love you always. I’m glad you love the ring.
In mere moments Madison, resting on the tips of her toes, placed a soft, loving kiss upon Haukea’s lips. Leaning back Madison arched an eyebrow, an expression of curiosity plastered on her face. Haukea wanted to laugh at the action, yet knew not to as it would certainly shatter the romantic moment.
Marsh: So, according to this custom, do I pick a ring out for you as well? How does it work?
Willow: From my research it would not be out of the ordinary for both partners to have a promise ring.
Haukea readjusted into a comfortable position once Madison disengaged their embrace, crossing her arms. Madison’s face held an expression of assurance.
Marsh: Well, when we get back to base I'll find you one to wear mutually. Also, I've been meaning to tell you that I'm excited to be living together now, it has been a blast. It's nice not to be by myself as I enjoy company. We have a nice little family life going on, you know?
Willow: You, Madison Marsh, certainly make me feel like the luckiest girl in the world. Shall we go celebrate?
Marsh: Response
Willow: We can hike back down, find a place to eat if you like.
Marsh: Response
Willow: When you're ready I’ll take our pack.
