((Bridge, Deck 1, USS Enterprise NCC-1701))
Slowly the simulator ceased and Gogigobo Fairhug stirred. As the lights oh so slowly and dramatically started to rise to full power, the back door opened with a mysterious slowness, allowing one form to be silhouetted in the rising fog as the simulator atmosphere drained out to be recycled.
Despite his short stature, in the dim lights, the flare of the red alert and the fog all that one saw of Sal Taybrim was his confidence and commanding presence. Calm and in control of the situation he was more of a presence than a man at the moment as Madison Marsh moved to blink at Commander Fairhug.
Fairhug: How do *you* think you did?
Marsh: The program must have been set on maximum difficulty and I clearly failed to achieve the mission objective Commander.
Fairhug: ::laughing:: Quite the opposite, actually. Were you aware that this is a no-win scenario?
Gogi assisted Madison to her feet, surveying the damage of the wrecked simulation.
Marsh: I was not aware prior to participating, but it sure fits the category of being a no-win scenario.
The Kobayashi Maru wreaked havoc with students and simulators alike. The legendary no-win scenario that played out for so many command tests still remained a mystery for so many.
Fairhug: What do you think, Commodore?
He smiled, stepped forward from the mist and shadows into the red glare of the flashing lights of the bridge.
Taybrim: I think you put every ounce of effort into the attempt and showed your creativity and mettle.
Marsh: Welcome sir, I hope that you are doing well.
He smiled, with a calm, charming and somewhat amused expression.
Taybrim: I am doing quite well. I hope you are as well, though I cannot speak for the simulator. ::he winked towards Gogi.:: I think your student has done well.
Fairhug: I agree. She has potential.
He indulged in a bit of amusement as Madison’s eyes darted between Gogi and himself realizing that the Commodore had proctored the entire exam.
Marsh: Wait, you observed the entire simulation? Any suggestions Commodore?
He gave a light nod of assent. He had observed the entire simulation.
Taybrim: I think your grasp of ship to ship tactics is good. I recommend brushing up on the maneuvering capabilities of any ship you sit in the command chair of. ::he looked around the bridge:: and really someone should fix these old fashioned exploding consoles. ::he chuckled at the last bit.::
Fairhug: Did you ever take the Kobayashi Maru test, Sal?
Taybrim: I did ::he nodded an assent:: I got high marks for diplomacy and… tenacity. When I realized I was the last person alive on the ship instead of sending a distress call, I set the ship on a collision course with the nearest Klingon ship while prompting a warp core breach.
Actually the file read: Sal Taybrim might stare down the mouth of hell and not flinch.
His instructor hoped that would never get tested.
It was tested. Captain Sal Taybrim had used the self-destruct on the USS Albion to drive it into a hijacked Romulan d’Deridex warbird before it could destroy a Federation colony. He had been bound and determined to be the last one off the ship – even if it meant his death. Fortunately they had some Klingon Allies that lent them a hand and a transporter beam out.
Marsh: Response
Fairhug: ::nodding:: Only one person has ever beaten it…officially, anyway.
Marsh: Responses
Taybrim: Oh yes, the legend himself.
Fairhug: I’m a fan of Kirk’s philosophy, if not his methods.
Cheating was not Sal Taybrim’s preferred method. There were so many things you simply could not cheat. Death being one of them.
And yet somehow even with his honest methods and willingness to stare death in the face and not back down here he was, standing, breathing, smiling.
Maybe he was lucky? Maybe he should just be grateful.
Marsh: Responses
Taybrim: but you are still breathing Ensign. As is Commander Fairhug. I say that calls for a celebration!
Fairhug: Well, what do you say we go and discuss this over a bottle of Saurian brandy?
Taybrim: I think that is a fabulous idea! And I even know where to get a very good one. ::he turned towards Marsh:: Well, Ensign, are you game?
Was the Commodore inviting her to come celebrate and have a drink?
Yes, yes he was.
