A gust of wind caught the sheets and pulled them along at a clip. Kreshkova got up for a moment. Crossing the deck with confidence, she adjusted some of the sails to slot them down just a little. Before her efforts took effect, the wind caught her hair and whipped her ponytail around like a thin tree branch caught in the gusts before a thunderstorm. As she returned to Ryden’s side, abject joy was written around the corners of her mouth and delight was written in the space between her eyes.
Kel: Okay, now we’re moving. You weren’t kidding... this thing really flies when it wants to.
But catching Ryden’s gaze, her face broke into a smile. She loved life out here on the water.
Kel: You’re different out here. Like… not weighed down. I like seeing you like this. You deserve it.
Maybe it was partially that Ryden was half Betazoid, but it felt like he understood her in that moment more than most people usually do. But at the same time, Sasch sobered at his words. She remembered years and years that she spent out on the water on the family yacht. Next to some of the people who had become so dear to her here, she would miss the water the most.
Kreshkova: I grew up on zhe vater, Ryden. Because of who my dad vas … vell, zhere vas vone privilege zhat I did haf. Our family owned a yacht - Vhen it vas varm enough, I practically lived on it. I am most myself vhen I am on zhe vater. Here, I am free. Here, I am zhe master of my own fate. I vill miss zhis.
Maybe her words were too weighty and he felt that they transferred to him. Sasch noted a new heaviness in his shoulders.
Kel: It's weird, you know. I thought I was getting used to change... transfers, new quarters, new missions. But I wasn’t ready for Sam to leave.
He didn’t look at her, not yet. Just focused on the water slipping past the hull.
Kel: It wasn’t just… what we were starting. It was how solid he made everything feel. Like… even when things were chaotic, I could find my center around him. And now... ::He finally turned, giving her a small, self-deprecating smile.:: Now I’m back to figuring out how to balance without a counterweight.
Kreshkova: Life is sometimes very hard and incredibly unfair.
This time it was his hair that the wind carried away.
Kel: Anyway. I didn’t bring you out here to be depressing. Just… thanks. For being here. This helps more than you know.
Sasch touched his chin and gently turned it so that he was looking at her.
Kreshkova: Let me ask you a qvestion.
Kel: ?
Sasch quirked her head. She didn’t smile; her heart was heavy with sympathy for her friend. But her eyes reached out to hold his gaze.
Kreshkova: Does it take a romantic attachment here on OPS to be your counterveight?
Kel: ?
Kreshkova: If you had someone who cared, who vould listen, who vould … vell … try to see you - just as you are. But who might be … qvite a vays avay. Could someone like zhat … help, maybe?
