((Impound Bay 42 – StarBase 118))
A’Mayri had done her best to pay attention to her fellow ensigns and the lieutenant. She appreciated Mi’shune’s bright enthusiasm, Munshi’s input and clarification, and finally Ysatch’s familiarity and ability to add ease into any situation they ended up in. It was all motivating and comforting in a way.
The Lieutenant had spoken up after giving the group a moment to gather their inquiries.
Zel: That is an excellent question! I won’t claim to have the clearances of a Commodore, not by a long shot. But I can tell you that our next mission will take everyone into independent space – and we’ll be using at least two of these ships. So why not start picking what we want to use, get in one and get it out for a test fly?
Ysatch/Rohan/Munshi: ?
A’Mayri nodded in understanding, pulled out her PADD from her waistband to key through the access code and catch small glimpses of the vehicles profiles she could see as the others discussed their own interest and questions. For anyone who had slowly gotten to know A’Mayri just a little better, you would see a slight green tint at the tops of her cheeks and wide unblinking shiny eyes..signs that she was indeed just as excited to partake.
sh’Sonora: Soooooo… who’s ready?
Munshi: I’m ready for the tour, Lieutenant. Let’s see what kind of engineering logic we have here.
Ysatch: Let's get in there!
A’Mayri: Let’s proceed as planned sir.
Zel: Excellent!
The continued vastness of Bay 42 was only further perpetuated by the now fully parted doors.
She had only seen some examples of these vessels in her studies and small test flights she’s been involved in whether on the field or in simulation. As impressive as some of these ships were, the complexity of the different stages of repair that exposed the inner workings and the structure of the bay itself caught her attention the most.
The fact that so many of these ships have been customized or improved in function to serve specific purposes was indeed a feat only possible because of the federation's desire to explore the stars. Whether that be through diplomacy…or long term planned diplomacy that required some more drastic measures.
Before A’Mayri could get carried away with the schematic she so happened to swipe through and coincidentally stood in front of, Zel welcomed them further in.
Zel: Welcome to Bay 42. Come on inside. That is the MFT Maximum Thrusters. No I didn’t name it, and yes that’s one of the ship’s we’ll be using.
sh’Sonora: Heh heh heh. I’m so flying that thing.
A’Mayri: ::selecting MFT profile, slightly surprised expression:: A cargo ship sir? It appears well armored compared to its usual counterparts…
Ysatch/Munshi: ?
Zel: That’s a good question. For the mission we’ll want something that can take a few hits and give a few hits while maintaining cover. The Klingon Condor is a solid choice as the Klingons do a lot of trade and any Klingon ship had shields and weapons. The Orion Syndicate cruisers are solid, too. This Ferasa Shuttle would be a good choice if I can get her fixed again…
Sh’Sonora: I might be able to get that beast running.
A’Mayri watched Mi’shune, quietly impressed with the Andorian helmsman. It was always admirable when confidence could be seen and felt so passionately. She felt the same type of sureness come from Munshi when he spoke about components and troubleshooting with ease. Had Ysatch had these same feelings as her while watching the more seasoned ensigns in their elements?
She offered him a small nod as they stood near each other, both to acknowledge the reference of their graduation simulation earlier and check in to see how he had fared with all of this new information too.
sh’Sonora: I mean, look around. You got more Orion small craft than a syndicate pirate gang, and half of them are made by the same cartel. Have to be. They’re used to functioning in less than ideal environments being worked on by amateur shuttle mechanics with very little material support. Cross-compatibility’s important to keep them operating. Besides, auxiliary vessel operation’s my specialty.
A’Mayri: I believe it’s often seen that any process that integrates a margin of misuse or calculated increased wear often develops the most adaptive and sustainable technology. If a craft is created under the expectation that it is to be maintained perfectly, then no single organization would get very far because meeting those standards would be unrealistic and taxing.
Ysatch/Munshi: ?
Zel: You tell me, which one of these do you want to take on a test run? I figure both Ensign sh’Sonora and myself can each fly a ship and let you all get inside, see how the engines and mechanics work, and get a feel for the thing.
Ysatch/Munshi: ?
Zel: I have flown all of them, multiple times. Stress tested if you will. Pick one and I can tell you about it!
sh’Sonora: I’ll let you all have the first pick. Besides… ::She looked over at the Ferasa.:: …it’d all pale in comparison, and she’s on blocks.
A’Mayri continued to understand her strengths and weaknesses. Realistically, it would be more advantageous to ride along with timed experience and established leadership to ask about life experiences, opinions and perhaps insight on career advice to ‘guide’ one’s career in the most optimal direction.
She once again went against what felt logically right. While Mi’shune may be a fellow ensign like her, maybe the confidence and the shiny aviators would make this an interesting learning experience. This was also her attempt to try and better know another one of her peers while learning so she still honored her original mission to become a skilled starfleet officer.
It was as if there was a small mental checklist.
A’Mayri: I would like to ride alongside Ensign sh’Sonora if possible sir, and if you are alright with it of course ::Looks towards Mi’shune::
sh’Sonora/Ysatch/Munshi/Zel: ?
The half Vulcan finally tucked her padd away and back into her waist band to be more present in the moment. She wondered for a moment what the other engineering officer must have thought about all of this, he seemed more knowledgeable about this place based off of his help when she hadn't known anything about Bay 42. Was he more impressed by alien technology or the configurations from federation standard procedures? She should put in the effort to reach out and ask.
For now she was content with these small moments of progress. Even if they were just for herself.
sh’Sonora/Ysatch/Munshi/Zel: ?
A’Mayri: Even if this only is categorized as a test run, it is exciting to be able to endeavor on a flight and engineering observation outside of schooling. A first official and non official flight.
