((Province Offices – Bajor))

Nara was watching this unfold with interest.  The interest of someone who already knew he had an open and shut case with the evidence he had not yet brought to light.

But, honestly, the easiest thing would be to get a confession from Idan, and have this all wrapped up without a long and messy trial.  That was a little selfish for Nara to admit – but Bajor already had enough on its hands trying to recover and expand after the occupation and the Dominion war.  It had been decades and yet there was a struggle, especially as one generation tried to keep a stranglehold on power as newer generations tried to step forward and change things.

Zorkal: If that’s the case, why did they try to block Starfleet and Bajoran medical officers from assisting those afflicted by giving them needed medicine?

Idan: These so-called "facts" of yours have yet to impress me. I've seen nothing here worth wasting my time over.

Zorkal: Is that so?

Nara: Sounds like you simply hope this goes away…

Which it wouldn’t.  Nara knew it.  Zorkal knew it.

Idan knew it, too.  Even if he didn’t want to admit it.

Idan: In other words, I am a busy man and I need to be on my way.

Zorkal: I’m afraid that won’t be possible, Idan.

Idan huffed and Nara started to understand his ploy.  He was trying to hold out.  Deflect and dodge, in the hopes that Nara and Zorkal would give up.  If Idan had so much as a moment to escape he would flee Bajor and leave a gaping hole for the rest of the Ministry to wonder about.  Then it would be a messy affair where Nara brought out his trove of evidence and started to prove why Idan ran, not just that he was bullied.

Idan: If there is nothing further, I must...

Nara: Ambassador…

He made a gesture, indicating that Zorkal sould play their ace in the hole.

Zorkal: There’s also a report of you being a co-conspirator with the poachers.

Idan: Excuse me!?

Nara: You heard correctly.

He stated calmly, watching Idan as well as the exits.  He wanted to keep the situation under control.

Zorkal: Really now, Idan?  Do you think we would not have insider information on the poachers and their activities as well as those who worked with them?  Even ordered them to do so?

Nara: We have a direct confession from one.

He said it with such calm reassurance that it cut through the tension in the room like a knife.

And Idan Vett snapped.

Idan: No!

Nara Haku wasn’t sure what he expected.  But what played out ended up more like a holonovella than real life.  It was almost surreal.

Idan Vett threw his stack of PADDs at the pair, like a scrappy holo-hero throws sand in the eyes of his opponent.  And then, maybe if he ran he might have slipped away – if he was very fast.  But Nara was also very fast and ready to run after him.

But no.  Idan Vett lunged at Ambassador Zorkal with a killing fury.

Only to get pinned against the wall by his throat.

Zorkal: I would ask if you would like to try that again, but we both know what will happen.

Nara: As much as I appreciate this was in self-defense, it will look bad for our case to have Minister Idan apprehended by a Cardassian.

He did not say it with coldness, but with understanding.  They both knew facts.  They both knew the past.  Nara was on Zorkal’s side in this – but Nara was also working to ensure that all the right things were done for the most positive outcome.

For Bajor.

For Cardassia.

For every sick child fighting craat’s disease.

Zorkal: Have no fear, Colonel.  This…sorry excuse for a person is all yours.

He tapped his communication badge and gave some orders.  Swiftly two trusted Bajoran militia he had specifically selected beamed down with a Starfleet marine.  The one Taybrim had promised to have help if Idan had been honest about the joint effort.

Nara: Take him to the brig on the Narendra, I’ll get the transfer orders to the high security detainment in Ashalla within the hour.

And he would make his case.  And he would make it airtight.

Still, he looked with some pity towards Idan Vett as he sunk down, sobbing, only to be carried and beamed away.

Idan: I ::beat:: I did it for Bajor...

As the transporter whisked him off, he sighed and shook his head.

Nara: You deluded yourself, Idan Vett.  Your job was to protect the pachitrods, not profit from them.

He sighed, shaking his head and moving away from Ambassador Zorkal.  His heart was heavy despite feeling that good work was done here today.  It would be difficult for the older generations to release their grip on Bajor and allow it to move forward.  To change and grow.

He had much work to do.
