His main occupation? Being a nosy Intel. His side hustle? Being a nosy colleague. Ross took the task of spreading some interquadrantal rumours very seriously - he really enjoyed Alora's thrilled reaction to Gogi's love life.

However, her daughter wasn't well entertained by the news: Shyla seemed dissatisfied with the amount of attention she got, causing Ross to pick her up and carefully shifting her into the high seat, before his gaze snapped back towards Alora curiously.

Ross: How about you? Are you seeing someone?

He knew that parting with her husband must have left a deep scar. Still - he didn't just want to assume that Alora wanted to stay on her own forever. He only wished her the best - whatever helped her to heal from the past events.

It took her a while to answer and Ross waited patiently - it wouldn't be the first time if Alora told him now she didn't want to talk about it. Just before he wanted to back out, she finally spoke up.

DeVeau: No.  I don’t see myself with anyone at this point in time.

He nodded, looking for the right way to put it:

Ross: Because... you just don't want to - or because you haven't met the right person?

He swallowed the word ...yet - Obviously, Alora had already found her person, only to lose them again way too early.

DeVeau: I’m not opposed to it, but I just haven’t connected with anyone like that.  It’s…honestly hard to think that way after Kalin.  I’m not saying I can’t, or that it won’t happen, it just hasn’t.

Ross gave another understanding nod. It only made sense. A loss like that left a deep scar you carried around for life - not the easiest base for a new romantic connection. He had sensed it in T'Reyna, too - even under the cool Vulcan stoicism there had always been an intense tremble of pain, whenever her gaze had drifted off. He knew it had driven her back to her home in the end, although he wasn't sure if she herself was aware.

DeVeau: What about you?

He shrugged.

Ross: I don't know. I should probably take a break from dating for now.

They were interrupted briefly as a waiter approached them - the same one who had brought Alora the high chair.  She ordered chicken, broccoli and rice for Shyla, and chicken caesar salad with a side of fries for herself.

Ross went for a simple dish of pasta, feeling a newfound appreciation for them ever since trying to do them himself from scratch. The operation had ended in a disaster of flour and sticky dough - only their new Ensign had been able to save him. Lyra. He remembered the intense sparkle in her eyes with a mixture of fondness and guilt - he still wasn't 100% sure whether he had taken their night for a date.

It felt as if Alora had read his thoughts.

DeVeau: I know T’Reyna didn’t work out, but you never know who will come into your life when you least expect it.

Ross had watched Shyla with an amused smile on his face, but now his gaze snapped back towards her as if having been caught in the act.

Ross: Uh... ::he struggled for words:: I mean, yeah. You never know. It's just... this whole thing of dating a colleague. I just don't know if it sits right with me. The constant worry about each other during missions. The balance between being professional together and... well. ::he flushed slightly::

DeVeau: ?

Ross: How was that for you two? Back then? Sorry, if I'm too curious. You don't have to talk about it, of course.

He didn't want to cause her any pain with his questions.

DeVeau: ?

He nodded thoughtfully.

Ross: I see. You know, I never really thought I was the family type. And now... I guess I'm a little late to the party. It would be nice to have somebody like that. But I've been fine in the past - and I'm sure I'll be fine in the long run as well. I don't really mind being on my own. ::he threw her a careful glance:: ...do you?

DeVeau: ?
