((Stellar Cartography, Deck 3, USS Aurora-A))
The test had completed and more importantly Lyra seemed satisfied with the results.
Lorana: Not a bad job.
Ysatch: Nailed it!
Voss: A clear shot to the finish line. And at 52,000 times the speed of light, the message should get there in… yeah, about 1.3 years. Not bad for ignoring the wormhole and relays! Maybe we can – ah!
Luxa chuckled wondering if any civilisation out there would receive the message and the countless that the academy has sent out to the ether over the years. Luxa had the cheeky thought that there was some culture built up around receiving these strange undecipherable messages from an unknown place. Which, of course, would be a very bad breach of the Prime Directive. Oops.
Then the holoprojectors shut down and Luxa immediately looked at Tori with annoyance.
Ysatch: Oh! I think I know what this is!
Voss: ::with a slightly nervous laugh:: Broke the ship day one. That’s a personal record for me.
Lorana: Lyra, these engineers like to feel useful. It's best to just let them get it over with quickly.
As the operations - engineer - got to work, Luxa just tapped her paw on the decking, her claws extended and began to tap rhythmically along the plating.
Ysatch: ::muffled from under the console:: When you have a ship that's overpowered like the Aurora, sometimes the systems overdraw power when at rest and trip a safety shutdown. We did a case study on the Defiant class at the Academy, it had a lot of similar problems at launch.
As Lyra knelt down beside him, Luxa rolled her eyes.
Voss: So it just needs a manual reset? I’ll have to see if Alok or A’Mayri have a free moment to install another regulator to help mitigate that for the future.
Lorana: If this was a common issue you'd think they'd have anticipated it and put in some preventions?
The Bajoran didn't seem to hear what she said and slid the configuration card back in and hit the reset button, which reset the displays.
Ysatch: I've actually been wondering about this. An advanced ship like the Aurora, with engines so powerful ... what kind of missions does Starfleet have in mind for us?
Lyra rested a hand on the console.
Voss: Yeah… I wonder. She’s almost a science vessel - I mean, the lab specs are amazing for a ship this size! But with those engines and sensors and hull plating...
Lorana: Space is dangerous and you never know what to expect on any mission. A ship like this has been designed to be as adaptable as possible. And I remind you that all Starfleet vessels are ships of science and exploration - fundamentally.
Voss: ::with a growing grin:: I like that. Hopefully we’ll really get to do some exploring. With a science lab we don’t have to bolt down a few times per trip.
Luxa smiled, she had had to make do with all manners of environments and equipments in her time at Starfleet. Now that she was a diplomat she was quite happy that all she had to be concerned about was herself. She was the instrument and there was a satisfaction about that.
Ysatch: ?
Voss: It’s funny… I always envisioned being stationed on a starship, but when we went to 118 for our final practical… I mean… *fifty decks* of science labs? I fell in love. Getting to live on the base, but still having a chance to take off in an incredible, brand new ship? This has to be the best of both worlds, right?
Lorana: Yes, be thankful you didn't get assigned to scan ice worms on an Andorian moon. There are thousands upon thousands of random outposts, small stations and planets than starships and countless ensigns are sent to them each year. Only the best get assigned to places like 118 and this ship :: smiles at Lyra, then scowls at Tori :: And sometimes people are just lucky.
Ysatch: ?
Voss: Well! ::looking at Tori and Luxa with a bright smile:: What should we check out next?
Lorana: I do have to go and check out my offices. I doubt they'll be as grand as this, Lyra.
Luxa nodded a farewell and cast another dark look towards Tori before she left.
Ysatch: ?
