Captain’s log. Stardate 240301.27.
After a particularly boisterous celebration at the awards ceremony last night, I imagine there’s a few sore heads on the base this morning.
Luckily, Bardeezan physiology doesn’t seem to react to alcoholic beverages the same way that a lot of other species do. Thank Landi. If it did, our ancestors wouldn’t have gotten much done.
Either way, the crew are going to have to rise and shine this morning. Time waits for no one and now that shore leave is officially over, it’s back to reality.
I have assigned some fairly low-stress tasks to the senior crew, to ease everyone into their duties again.
Commander Foster will be heading a meeting between the Medical and Science departments. I have asked him to liaise with Lieutenant Wethern and Ensign Voss, in particular, to get a general overview of the departments and how they can better work together. I have also asked Lieutenant Drex to attend. His input as Chief Science Officer on the Eagle could be invaluable.
Meanwhile, we have discovered some damage on the outer hull of the base. I have asked Commander McLaren to take Lieutenant Sylvax and Ensigns sh’Sonora and Munshi to take a look at it and get it fixed ASAP. I’m sure it won’t be too taxing for them, but it needs to be taken care of.
Lieutenant Willow, on the other hand, may have her work cut out for her a bit more. After the New Year’s celebration in the San Francisco District, it is now hosting a New Year’s Day parade, celebrating the base’s cultural diversity. People from all over the base and even the sector have come to celebrate, so while I don’t envision any particular problems, we still need boots on the ground for crowd control and to deter anyone who might have any ideas of starting some kind of trouble. With that in mind, I’ve asked her to take Lieutenant S’zurak and Ensign Nagazi with her. I can’t imagine too many people wanting to tangle with *that* team.
As for me?
It seems the life of a Starbase CO is mostly taken up with diplomacy. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised in a sector where the two major powers other than the Federation are the Klingons and the Romulans.
Myself, Commander Ross and Ensign Bryce are meeting with a delegation of officials from Veqlargh Bal III - the home planet of a species known as the Ameoneians.
The Ameoneians have been, until very recently, an isolationist species. Having been colonised by the Klingons over three-hundred years ago and subjected to a brutal, decade long occupation, the Ameoneians fought back and were able to force the Klingons off of their planet.
The experience left them with (understandably) a deep distrust of outsiders and ever since, they had remained hidden. Protected by massive mine fields, asteroid weapons and jamming technology, making their region of space virtually impassable and impossible to scan.
However, just over half a century ago, they began to send out probes and scout crafts. Tentatively reaching out to other species again.
A positive interaction with a species called the Velorians began to restore their faith and curiosity in worlds behind their own.
Given that the Federation didn’t even exist when their planet was colonised by the Klingon Empire, they were pleasantly surprised to learn that there are now other powers in the region that offer safety and stability, rather than brutality and destruction.
Of course, the Klingon Empire is much changed since those days, too. But given their history, it’s hardly surprising that the Ameoneians are more than a little wary of entering into any discussions with the Klingons at this time.
Thus, it falls on the crew of StarBase 118 to welcome Chancellor Athemir Sael and the rest of the Ameoneian delegation and give them a good impression pf how things are in the sector these days.
The plan is to give them a tour of the base and then, hopefully, finalise their application to join the Federation.
I have high hopes for the meeting.
As long as no sentient computer viruses read their ugly heads again.
