((StarBase 118 – Turbolift))

The Fantasia had docked without issue. Fortunately, there were enough non-memory affected crew to keep the basic workings of StarBase 118, well, working. As soon as he stepped off the yacht he received a very fast paced, overly complete summary of everything that was going on from Lieutenant Hernandez.  Up to and including the weather controls in the civilian center were on the fritz and it was raining in the San Francisco district.

Sal had already located Sol, and knew from her location alone that she was working on the weather problem. Most systems that were offline had been brought back online, medical was reporting good progress with reversing the issue. At this moment everyone was already doing the things that needed to get done, and the crisis was more or less under control. There was little else Sal could do, but he was glad he was here, just in case something else cropped up.

And things always cropped up in turbolifts. Twelve years ago, Sal Taybrim was assigned to StarBase 118 as its First Officer, and as he became commanding officer, through the ranks and the years, ever since then it was an ongoing coincidence – almost a joke – that if you were going to get news it would happen in a turbolift. Good news, bad news, new news. Always in a turbolift.

Sal was gently wondering if this would hold true.

It did.

No sooner had the lift started to rise towards the hub, the commline shrilled alerting him to the StarBase 118 Starfleet Academy satellite campus, and two newly placed Ensigns on StarBase 118.

As far as news went, greeting new Ensigns was one of the things Sal Taybrim enjoyed the most in life.  He was also pleased to note that the shielding that sheltered the academy campus from the rest of the StarBase also appeared effective in blocking whatever affected the memories of the civilians and crew in the rest of the StarBase.

Well, odd as it may have seemed, with everyone else already quite immersed in finalizing getting StarBase 118 back online and the memory issues fixed, Sal was open and available to tend to the important job of stewarding newly placed officers. Besides, the extroverted part of him loved these little moments of connection.

He contacted the hub, Lieutenant Yang gave him the all clear that they didn’t need him present, and keyed the turbolift downwards towards the campus.

((StarBase 118 Academy Campus – Campus Green))

If the weather in the San Francicso District of the civilian center was on the fritz, it showed no signs of such a malfunction on the Academy green.  The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the flowers were fabulously in bloom.

Sal never found it difficult to locate new Ensigns.  Just look for who was in a brand-new uniform and seemed to stand out. A bit more confident than the cadets, and yet a bit more nervous than the professors. That perfect energy between accomplishment and potential.

Sal smiled softly as he approached.  For a man wearing Commdore’s insignia, he was unassuming when he wanted to be. He was a Betazoid of modest height, a firm build, and dark calm eyes that radiated confidence through a storm.

Taybrim: Good afternoon Ensigns.  I am Commodore Sal Taybrim. I would like to officially welcome you onboard StarBase 118 operations.

Ysatch/A’Mayri: ?

The Commodore had an easy expression of good humor.

Taybrim: Ah yes, some of the rumors I am sure are true.  There was a strange energy pulse that affected the memories of the crew, but the good news is by now it is under control and I expect we’ll get an all clear from medical shortly. That said, there’s no cases in the academy, and there are no incidents of anyone being affected after the initial pulse so I believe the three of us are safe.

Ysatch/A’Mayri: ?

His tone was controlled and warm. Clearly he was aware of the situation, but he wasn’t sensationalizing it like the rumors did.

Taybrim: Usually I would bring newly assigned Ensigns on a tour of the station. But considering the circumstances I think it more prudent to travel as a trio to the hub where we can keep an eye on things.

Ysatch/A’Mayri: ?

Taybrim: The hub will also give you both a better feeling of how the systems work on StarBase 118, and let you see the ships we use to explore the Trinity Sector.

There was a misconception at times that being posted to a starbase would mean staying stuck in one place and not exploring. But Sal found that sometimes they did more exploring, it was merely exploring with purpose. And they had a wonderful home to return to.

Ysatch/A’Mayri: ?

Taybrim: Come, let’s head to the hub and I encourage you to ask any questions you have while we travel.

Ysatch/A’Mayri: ?
