((Donut Worry, Promenade, Starbase 118))

Wyn could think of dozens of stories from his time in Starfleet from the most sordid to the downright hilarious. Some he would tell at a whim, some he might only tell when drunk and some you would have to pry out of him with a crowbar.

Still, he took wisdom from his experiences and was, with each day, seeing life with more clarity and charting a path forwards where he could feel good about his choices and outcomes.

Foster: That’s the thing, I’m not dead so… once you get your ass kicked if you live through it, you take the lesson and do something with it. Don’t get kicked as hard next time.

sh’Sonora: I hope I earn your trust enough to hear some of these stories, Sir. That is if you don’t mind socializing with a mere ensign like me.

He offered her a warm, rather human smile.

Foster: Tcha. Rank is immaterial if the company is good.  And I hope you find the company good.

He offered, seeking some confirmation in his own way. Her attitude was not like the majority of other Andorians he had interacted with, though there had been other outliers.

sh’Sonora: What can I say? You’re the first Andorian I’ve meet since I’ve joined the Academy that hasn’t treated me like something that grew in the bottom of an aquaculture algae tank. You’re engaging me not like I’m some caste-hopping merchant-girl trying to play soldier. You don’t treat me like that at all, Sir. You treat me like a normal person. Probably because you don’t have all the cultural baggage of our home moon. It’s refreshing.

He nodded as if to say ‘fair.’

Because it was both true and fair.

Foster: I can’t deny that my perspective comes from a vastly difference experience than most of our species. But it’s also one I stand by so you can count of that.  You are what you chose to be, and to be honest the choices we make matter more than who we were born as.

How many so-called high born people squandered their inheritance by awful decisions? Then again there was a saying that virtue isn’t about who you are, but who you choose to be each day. One great deed, one moment of brilliance, one tremendous gift meant little if the rest of your life was horrible.

sh’Sonora: ?

Foster: So yes, if you want storytime, we should meet again. Keal’s is particularly well know to welcome Starfleet officers and it’s the place for some rousing stories.

Keal’s was a Terran Irish styled pub, full of natural woods, plenty of traditional games and run by a retired Starfleet officer who was determined to ensure the enlisted and officers of the base always had somewhere they could feel at home.

sh’Sonora: ?

His antennae wiggled.  What else to do?  What did he do?  Well, he would admit that what he liked wasn’t really what most people liked.

Foster: Me?  Well, I run long distances for fun. I have a license to breed tribbles. I also have a mixologists license because it was the best way to get invited to the good parties in the academy.

He was telling the solid truth on that. He not only got licensed to be a bartender, but got the reputation as the best bartender on the campus, mixing biological science with the art of flavor. It really did get him invited to all the best parties.

Because, well, Wyn wasn’t the best at being socially popular, but he knew how to hack the system and make himself useful.

sh’Sonora: ?

Foster: how about you?  What do you like doing in your downtimes?  Any plans for shore leave?

He was always curious what other people enjoyed – and then he filed it away in his brain as if it was some sort of rolodex of ‘what normal people do.’

sh’Sonora: ?
