((Jansens Quarters - USS Vigilant))
::The bow slid across the violin eliciting happy noises that in no
single solitary way SOUNDED ANYTHING LIKE THE MUSIC IN RAVENSVILLE.
Jansen had to stop and laugh to himself about the way that sounded. With
some thought he laid the violin down softly on his desk and moved over
to the replicator. His time in the kitchen in The City had done a good
bit to relax him but now it had his mind wandering...certainly here he
had not the advantages that Regulus had on Starbase 10.::
Orrey: Plomek tea. Hot.
::As the drink materialized he picked up the cup and moved over to the
desk settling in. Switching on the console he began to look through a
listing of botanists.::
Orrey: Let's see here.....
::Among the list was the name of a young woman. Already her rank had
climbed from Ensign to Lieutenant (junior grade) though she had only
been a graduate of the Academy for a few months. Before her stretched
out a promising career. That very lieutenant (junior grade) lay on her
couch in her quarters. The mission had been completed, shed been healed
and ordered to partake in some down time while the ship made its way
back to its base - and then shore leave had begun. Boredom had set in,
though she had taken some time to enjoy some books, for there was only
so much reading she could do. Honestly, Alora preferred to _do_
something. Maybe Saveron was feeling better. Would he be interested in
playing a game? Was Saavoks classes over yet? She really ought to look
into the schedule so shed know.
The chirp of an interstellar communication spurred Alora to lift her
head from its pillow. After the second chirp, she flipped her legs over
the side of the couch, then rose. Despite the wonderful technology, she
was still stiff and sore. Alora eased over to the intercom and ordered
the computer connect.
DeVeau: Alora here.
Orrey: Hello. I'm Lieutenant Jansen Orrey, Counselor on the Vigilant. I
wonder if I could talk to you some.
DeVeau: Oh, hello! Sure.
::Lieutenant Jansen Orrey. The name was not familiar to her at all, but
really, was it all that surprising? Alora was still new to the world of
graduates and shed only served for a a little while aboard a single
ship. Why would she know anyone else whom she hadnt met at the Academy?::
DeVeau: How can I help you?
Orrey: Well I noticed in the database that you happen to have
specialized in botany.
DeVeau: That I do.
::And zoology, but if he wasnt looking for a zoologist, there was no
point in mentioning that little tidbit.::
Orrey: Well I'd like to start growing some plants in my quarters here.
DeVeau: Oh? All righty.
::And he needed a botanist? It was an odd request, to be sure, but hey,
whatever floated his boat.::
DeVeau: What can I do for you?
Orrey: ::Jansen leaned over and got a PADD taking notes.:: Well I have
some interest in plants yes, I was more thinking about fruit and vegetables.
DeVeau: Ah, so you can have fresh produce. I can recommend some good
miniature plants that will do well in small spaces, though youll need
an environmental regulator.
::That wasnt necessarily a difficult object to obtain, but sometimes
people thought it just enough trouble to not make having the plants
worthwhile.::
Orrey: ::Jansen nodded happily some as he wrote down the need for the
device.:: Alright anything else?
DeVeau: Youll need to find out specific conditions for the plant youre
interested in keeping, of course, then set the regulator to mimic those
conditions.
Orrey: ::With a nod he added that note to his list.:: Alright. With the
regulator as long as I have a stabilizer for when the ship is rocked,
won't any type of plant do well?
DeVeau: You would _think_ so, but there are actually a lot of plants out
there that do great in the wild, but when confined to such a small
space, they dont flourish.
Orrey: Dually noted. Such as?
DeVeau: Well, larger plants of course, trees and such, but certain
species just dont survive well in regulators. The Andorian Sheifa
flower for instance. Its gorgeous, but it needs more room to flourish -
at least a half acre.
Orrey: ::Jansen nodded enthusiastically.:: I saw some of those when I
was on Andoria recently.
DeVeau: Oh? Nice! You were there for a while? Have you visited elsewhere?
::That was one of the reasons Alora had decided to join Starfleet.
Besides the fact that she felt shed get a better opportunity in her
field, it had the distinct advantage of traveling to all sorts of new
places.::
Orrey: ::As he nodded still.:: I spent some time on Vulcan and on
Andoria. ::Jansen moves the PADD away and shifts his violin to the other
side of the table.::
DeVeau: Youre a violinist! Its lovely.
::While Alora had dabbled with the instrument, it was not one she had
particularly enjoyed playing though she adored the beauty of its voice.
Orrey: Oh? Do you play anything?
DeVeau: Actually, I do. I play piano, guitar, and I sing.
::As Orrey set aside his PADD, she reached for hers and began to tap
upon it.::
DeVeau: Here, Ill transfer some information about various plants I
recommend, including some Terran ones. Id offer to send you babies of
mine but Im pretty far out and Im not sure theyd do well on the trip.
::She glanced up in between the little dances of her fingers upon the PADD.
DeVeau: How long have you played? Id love to hear you while Im working
on this - if youre willing that is!
Orrey: I've played since I was ten. It's always a nice way to recenter.
DeVeau: Musics been a part of my life from as far back as I can
remember. Why dont you play me something?
::It was the second time shed suggested it and Alora really was curious
to hear. She enjoyed listening to others make music. Well, if they were
decent at it anyway.::
::Jansen lifted the violin up, absentmindedly thinking about it he
showed off the Federation star field burned into the back and the Vulcan
IDIC on the front in the place of a chin rest before he started to draw
the bow across starting slow and softly.::
::Although she was making a list of various flora to suggest to Orrey,
that did not mean that Alora was unable to listen and appreciate the
impromptu concert. The list was by no means comprehensive, there was far
too much variety scattered throughout the galaxy and the list would be
far too long. However, she did offer a goodly amount of suggestions and
catagorised them according to various properties - such as flowering,
those that released the most oxygen adn the like.
It took long enough that hed gone though three songs before she
finished and when she finally sent off the data to his digital box, she
lifted her gaze back to him and smiled.::
DeVeau: That was lovely.
Orrey: ::As he laid down the violin and nodded Jansen smiled.:: I thank
you. But now I must hear you sing and play at some point. Ah! How about
a holo conference? We could duet?
::There was a visual brightening of Aloras expression and her smile
returned in earnest.::
DeVeau: I would love that! What sort of music do you like?
Orrey: ::Jansen let a happy laugh out at her smile and his own
response.:: I'll play anything at least once.
DeVeau: But whats do you play the most?
Orrey: Mostly classical. I've done some work copying a Klingon opera or
two. Andorian Blues also, but I'm trying to stay positive lately.
DeVeau: Positive is always good...did something bad happen?
Orrey: The last mission had a slow depressing musical piece that I'd
rather be keen on forgetting.
::FOr a moment, Alora sat there and stared at the image of the man on
her screen. Finally, after being unable to fathom exactly what he meant,
she asked,::
DeVeau: Are you telling me that your latest mission...had a sound track?
Orrey: ::With a laugh undercut heavily with the gravity of the
conversation.:: Yes, yes it did. Perhaps in a day or so?
DeVeau: Sure. Were on shore leave for now, so I have a couple of days,
and then time will be determined by my mission.
::She paused, but honestly, the girl just couldnt resist.::
DeVeau: So...how in the world did you get to be on a mission with a
sound track?
::Honestly, she was boggled.::
Orrey: It wasn't by choice. It was a piece that was keeping the crew
under a group hallucination.
DeVeau: Oh.
::That would certainly take away the appeal.::
DeVeau: To bad you cant have goodsound tracks during missions. You
know, like music to motivate and encourage.
Orrey: ::With a thoughtful look.:: To suddenly burst into song on the
bridge....
DeVeau: It would be awesome! Maybe it will actually happen sometime.
::That would be extremely amusing. The idea of various superior officers
suddenly singing and dancing sent her into a short fit of giggles.::
Orrey: Anything is possible. Shall we adjourn now so that I can do some
acquiring and make my quarters slightly more breathable?
DeVeau: Sure. When do you want to get together?
::Alora enjoyed playin and she enjoyed performing, but there was just
something about doing so with someone else. It was a different sort of
thrill when two came together, melodies and harmonies winding and
melting into glorious song.::
Orrey: Two days should work...say 1300?
DeVeau: Would 1400 work? That gives me a little more time for lunch to
settle.
::Because singing on a full stomach wasnt necessarily pleasant.::
Orrey: That would work well yes.
DeVeau: Awesome! I look forward to it!
Orrey: Sounds perfect. I'll see you then!
::Jansen closed the channel and settled back in his chair looking at the
information she had sent over. He stood with a smile and a nod. While
acquiring wasn't on his long list. The end result of this would be well
done indeed.::

((Aloras Quarters, USS Mercury ))
::Alora shifted around as the conversation came to a close and the
screen faded to black. She found it amusing how at least two people had
found her from way across the galaxy and contacted her in regards to
some knowledge she held. She had to admit, it was an unexpected but
welcome surprise.
That conversation ended, Alora rose and patted her stomach which growled
in response. Time to get something to eat - and then back to packing.::
