((Curry’s Martial Arts Training, Promenade, DS9))
Wynters had been invited by Ensign Ezra to go to some martial arts training on the station. But it was of a kind she was not used to. She had heard that some of the Earth styles were influences by certain cultures and history, but none of her training had had any of that. For her, martial arts were all about how to survive in a desperate situation with an opponent who is trying to kill you. There was no ceremony, no special attire, no cultural connections. Even her Vulcan teacher had been of that sort of school.
The fighting didn’t bother her at all. But she was very nervous about accidentally insulting the Ensign or making him think she looked down on his training. Fortunately, she wasn’t one to talk so much.
After a quick round where the local Vulcan Master, T’Parr, had tested her, the Klingon Mok’Bara Master had come out and he was quite the unexpected package: short, with a pot belly, and quite jolly for a Klingon. She had no idea what to make of him. But right now, the Klingon was evaluating Ensign Ezra.
D’Rel: ::To Ezra:: So, you have training in the Mok’bara?
Zerva: No Sensei. I do however have training in the earth martial arts of Kempo, Jujitsu and Escrima.
D’Rel: ::listening intently:: Ahhhh. So be it. Do you wish to test yourself against me, oh spotted one? Or did you just want to take lessons? If you wish to fight, I won’t prematurely attack like this one. ::indicates T’Parr::
The Vulcan disdainfully sniffed. It seemed to be her modal response to all the Klingon’s provocations.
Zerva: I wish to learn the Mok’bara style. Whichever of the Mok’bara forms you are willing to teach. Once completed I would like to test those forms, sparing against you on the knowledge you will have taught me here today.
D’Rel: ::laughing out loud:: Very well spotted one. We shall see just how well you fair in the Mok’bara. It is not as simple as your earth forms. It takes many years of practice to become a master in the arts and even then, not all who train in its forms will make it. A single session or day is but not a breath upon the wind. It will take you more time than I think you have this day. Certainly, time more than the simplest of Suus Mahna could ever teach.
Wynters wondered if Ezra’s outfit was damp from all the Klingon’s spittle, which he ejected in massive quantities whilst laughing.
Meanwhile, the Vulcan continued her look of disdain. Wynters idly wondered if they were an item, and this was all an act.
Wynters: ::To Ezra:: Careful Sir!
She knew he wanted to be informal and have her call him Erza, but that made her so very uncomfortable. She and the Ensign weren’t friends. They weren’t going to be hanging out and doing each other’s hair. It made her nervous that if the others in the department heard them being on a first-name basis in any situation it might cause trouble for her. None of it would touch him, but her life could be made significantly worse. Attending some training or classes was one thing, but the informality was quite another.
Zerva: Yes sir. I understand. I will put a hundred percent effort to the skills you teach me this day. I am ready to begin.
D’Rel: ::raised an eyebrow:: We shall see.
Wynters: You bought a ticket, sir. Now I’ll guess you’ll take the ride.
T’Parr turned to face Jill.
T’Parr: You have retained much knowledge of what was taught before. This is good. Now that I have tested your level of skill, we shall begin. Take your place to the left of Emili.
Wynters was unsure what the Vulcan was going to do. In Wynters’ training, the more senior first- and second-year students usually fought the newer first-year students two on one. It was to mimic live combat where you could expect to be surprised by a superior force. While they might not hit at full power, it was not to be mistaken for a fun sparring contest either. All the illusions went out the window when you got thrown against a metal bulkhead for the first time. But those didn’t seem to be the rules here and she wasn’t sure about the protocols.
Wynters: Uhh, you sure?
T’Parr: I have judge you accordingly. Your place is there, second to Emili.
Wynters: Very well.
T’Parr resumed her class, with assistance from Emili with those students who had trained with T’Parr before. Her attention was on Wynters.
T’Parr: I shall correct the technique where it is lacking.
oO Was it lacking when I almost put two finger holes right into your kidneys? Oo
Wynters: Of course.
She took the proper stance.
T’Parr: We will begin with the leg sweep.
Wynters: My favorite.
((Brief Time Skip. Curry’s Martial Arts Training, Promenade, DS9))
D’rel seemed to be spending an awful lot of time creating new commentary on Ezra’s performance.
Zerva: ::moving more fluid:: Like this Sensei?
D’Rel: ::nods in approval:: Better, but your movements are stiff like a wounded targ! ::deep laugh:: It will take time. Now it is time to test your form. Proceed to the Lagh’taH stance.
Zerva: Responses?
D’Rel: Not too bad. But stop calling me “sen-say” or whatever that is. Human term. I am a Thl’langaH’na Mok’bara. I will have my style. If you can’t form the sounds, Mok’bara Master will do.
Zerva: Responses?
D’Rel: ::Hearty laugh, more spittle:: Now follow my form… ::begins his movements, for Ezra to follow::
Zerva: Responses?
D’Rel: Less talking, more learning, Spotted One!
((Brief Time Skip. Curry’s Martial Arts Training, Promenade, DS9))
T’Parr: ::To Wynters:: Now we shall see if the corrections on your technique are lacking.
oO I got your corrections right here… Oo
Wynters: I am eager to see if I have it.
T’Parr: I shall be the judge of that.
Wynters: So be it. Let’s go. ::assumes the stance::
((Brief Time Skip. Curry’s Martial Arts Training, Promenade, DS9))
The training classes had gone on for some time and Jill’s arms, legs, back, everything down to her bits were seven kinds of exhausted. Ensign Zerva’s earlier enthusiasm seems to have maintained, but he had to have been feeling spent as well. They met at the refreshment station for some rehydration.
Wynters: Was it everything you expected, Mister Zerva? ::drinks rehydration cocktail:: ((OOC: Spaceorade?))
Zerva: Responses?
Wynters: Yeah, it was pretty different for me. I didn’t have any training like this before. But it was fun. That T’Parr though. She’s a piece of work.
Zerva: Responses?
Wynters: That Klingon seems to be a jolly guy. I bet he could have wasted half this room before anyone else even made a move. Real operator, I could tell.
Zerva: Responses?
