Rana: ::clicking thoughtfully:: Do you see anything...notable about it? Does it seem intelligent?

Vidya: The vessel would appear different than other vessels. This is unlike the crystalline forms and their alien counterparts ::checking the sensors:: Life forms of unknown aliens. Many different forms. Some are familiar, others not. Recommendation.  Further analysis is required for absorption if that is your request.

Rana: Many different forms? How strange. Perhaps they keep live prey with them.

She had to admit that the idea was appealing if nonsensical. The space on board their ship was limited and better spent on other, more practical things.

Hida: Communication has commenced Captain. Recommendations?

Vidya: Curious. They wish to commence communications. Assessment? They seek surrender or they wish to learn of us as we do of them. Recommendation Captain? Commencement.

Rana: ::nodding:: Commence communication.

The comms officer nodded at Rana and she heard the voices of this latest group of aliens for the first time.

C. Dewitt: =/\= This is Connor Dewitt of the starship Khitomer. =/\=

Strange names! But not an immediate attack. Rana continued to puzzle out the words being spoken as the comms officer managed the system.

C. Dewitt: =/\= We are not hostile. We are currently experiencing navigational and power interference within the region. If there is anyone receiving this… we request assistance. =/\=

Vidya: Curious. They are unaware we are responsible. They seek out our aid. Recommending visuals. This could work to our advantage, Captain. Shall I continue assessment of threat off visuals? It would give us more time.

Rana: Continue assessment. Alert me immediately if you find anything especially unusual. For now, we will maintain this illusion.

Rana looked to Hida and waited for the determination if this ship contained anybody that would be worth her while to talk to, or if it was better to simply consider it as fuel, absorb it, and move on. Energy spent communicating was energy not spent building up the rest of the ship, not spent finding better prey.

A male human. Curious. Rana was so far disappointed, but there were some oddities in that species. They let their males do much more, it seemed.

Velithari Comms Officer, Hida: =/\= Identify yourself. =/\=

C. Dewitt: =/\= My name is Conno… =/\=

Velithari Comms Officer, Hida: =/\= ::sharply:: Unacceptable. =/\=

Rana allowed a small twitch of her eyes in the Velithari equivalent of a small smile. Hida was doing exactly the right thing, and Rana couldn't help but feel proud of her.

Velithari Comms Officer, Hida: =/\= I will not address a male. You will present a female authority or this channel will be terminated. =/\=

Vidya gained Rana's attention--it seemed that whatever assessment was being conducted would soon be over. Rana hummed quietly to show her appreciation for Vidya's work. Without it, this whole encounter would be far more difficult.

C. Dewitt: =/\= Of course. ::voice lowered:: I am merely assisting the command authority aboard this vessel.=/\=

C. Dewitt: =/\= Thi… Uhm… This is Captain Ayemet Dewitt of the USS Khitomer. =/\=

Rana noticed the male's hesitation. He did not seem as prepared as her own communications officer, a fact she could assign to his being male. There was a reason why the more important members of the Jorogumo crew were entirely female.

Rana: ::quietly to Vidya:: This male seems untrained. Take a note of this.

Anything that meant they weren't being attacked was at least leaning positive.

Velithari Comms Officer: =/\= Acceptable. ::pause:: Stand by to talk to the Captain. =/\=

Rana tilted her head to Hida and took a step forward, allowing herself to seem as imposing as possible. This ship's--the Khitomer's--crew needed to recall whose territory they had stumbled upon. She clicked her claws together, allowing for a full view of the power she wielded in her form alone.

Rana: =/\= I hope I am addressing the leader of your ship this time. =/\=

Her tone made it clear that any other circumstance would not be taken kindly. Truly, the idea of having a male on communications was beginning to grate at Rana's nerves.

A.Dewitt: =/\= I am Captain Ayemet Dewitt of the Starship Khitomer. =/\=

Rana: =/\= Your male is quite unrestrained, Captain. Perhaps you should consider revoking his communications status. =/\=

C.Dewitt/Korras/Stros: Response

A.Dewitt =/\= :glancing at Connor: We are bonded, and he took my name :beat: it was my gift to him. =/\=

Bonded to a male? An interesting notion, but the idea of keeping one's name attached to one did make a certain kind of sense as a records-keeping method.

Rana: =/\= Very well. Tell me, Captain AyemetDewitt, what is your purpose here?

C.Dewitt/Korras/Stros: Response

A.Dewitt: =/\= We were investigating the ship before us as it appeared to have been badly damaged, and then we appeared to be caught by the anomaly we now find ourselves in. If you cannot assistance we can be on our way. =/\=

Rana glanced towards Vidya. For the time being, it would be useful for the strangers to believe they could offer assistance from a natural phenomenon. They would likely be easier to fight if it came to that, or if they were to become useful resources they might be more docile. She was curious to see what Vidya's assessment would bring, but she refused to step out of the frame now that she was speaking to a woman of importance.

Rana: =/\= The ship before? A hostile, it seems. Believe me, I am having my women investigate it as well.=/\=

C.Dewitt/Korras /Stros: Response

That was when another woman approached with an unfamiliar gesture that seemed intended to convey some kind of subservience. Rana appreciated that.

Semara: =/\= Pleasure to make your acquaintance.  :: Beat :: For some time now, we've been dealin' with invasions into our own territory from the same pair of species you've expertly dispatched.  We didn't want 'em establishin' a foothold in this nebula, but it seems we didn't need to be worried. =/\=

She was clever, or at least brave enough to say what she believed the truth to be, it seemed. 'Expertly dispatched' indeed. They had hardly given the Jorogumo any trouble, once they had figured out what was happening.

A. Dewitt/C.Dewitt/Korras/Stros: Response

Rana: =/\= You have experience with these species, then? =/\=

Vidya/Semara/A. Dewitt/C.Dewitt/Korras/Stros: Response

Rana: =/\= We have only recently encountered them ourselves. They are...relatively simple. Perhaps we do indeed have a common goal. =/\=

Vidya/Semara/A. Dewitt/C.Dewitt/Korras/Stros: Response
