Michaels: I see you brought your pet with you. What is her name? His name?
Zerva: ::smiles:: I did. Her name is Foxy Lady.
Foxy looked up at Lera. She was excited to meet a new friend.
Michaels: Foxy Lady. That is a good name. ::reaching out to pet Foxy, Lera held short for a moment. :: May I?
Zerva: Of course.
Michaels: Oh you are such a good girl. And such a beautiful one as well.
Foxy: Bark!
Foxy’s curled up tail began to wag uncontrollably. She whimpered up at Lera enjoying the petting and attention she was getting.
Zerva: Do you like dogs?
Michaels: My Human mother has always been more of a cat person. But we found an abandoned pug on our property... You know about pugs, do you not? Small light brown dogs with a dark face that looks like someone pushed it in. My mother says that pugs are cats in disguise. They want very little more than to sit on your lap and purr and give you kisses if you will let them. ::Bending lower so that she and Foxy were nearly face to face.:: Do you want to give me a kiss, Foxy? Yes, I thought so. You are such a beauty.
Foxy happily gave Lera puppy kisses on her cheek. She leaped up almost knocking the ensign over. Foxy’s lets play mode was activated and she was happy to have the attention.
Zerva: ::nodding:: Yes I’m familiar with Pugs. That’s a good assessment of them being a lot like cats. I noticed that myself when I got to work with some over one summer as a young teenager at an animal shelter. ::smiling as he watched them play:: Pug puppies are too cute.
Michaels: Indeed. You will have to forgive me. I am over-reacting to Foxy.
Zerva: ::smiling:: It’s okay. She has that effect upon others. She clearly likes you. You’re welcome to spend as much time with her as you like. I don’t always have the time with her on the Khitomer, as my duties in security keep me pretty busy. It would be nice to have someone who likes her as much as I do, to spend some time with her. You can come by my quarters any time. Just be careful, she’s still not fully potty trained yet.
Michaels: I did wish to speak with you. Will you sit with me?
Zerva: ::nodding:: Of course.
Ezra followed her over to a table with four chairs. Foxy followed along, happily wagging her tail. Ezra took a seat next to Lera. Foxy looked up wanting to be petted some more and tried to jump up on to Lera’s lap.
Foxy: Bark!
Michaels: It is obvious that Foxy was expecting more attention with so many people around and so few paying attention to her. I will definitely be taking you up on your offer to spend time with Foxy.
Zerva: Foxy. Settle down so we can talk okay? You guys can play some more later. ::looks around and spies a small stick:: Here you go.
Ezra shook the stick and gave it a light toss just enough for her to run and grab it within the length of her leash. She came back holding the stick in her mouth. She laid down on the ground and began to chew on one end of the stick.
Michaels: She is slightly larger than the typical lap dog.
Zerva: Sorry about that. Foxy gets excited when she gets attention.
Michaels: There is nothing about this behaviour for you to feel sorry about. :: Lera paused and watched Foxy working with the stick. It was difficult to keep from smiling. :: That is one thing dogs have over cats. A dog makes no attempt to hide its emotions while a cat... A cat is almost Vulcan in that regard. I am not certain that even Amelia could tell what a cat is thinking or feeling. You can play with a cat, but it is questionable whether the cat is actually playing or not.
Zerva: ::smiling:: She loves playing fetch. She’s made up her mind. That’s her stick now. If you try and take it from her, she’ll play tug of war on the other end of the stick. If you throw the stick she’ll go running for it.
Lera sat back in the chair and interlaced her fingers in front of her chest. She watched Zerva and Foxy and found herself envying them. A waitress came near the table offering fluted glasses of champagne. Lera took one.
Michaels: Thank you, Miss. If it is not asking too much, could you bring us a few lemon bars?
The waitress nodded and moved off in the direction of the main table. Lera turned her attention back to Ezra. Her worries that she had offended him by helping Amelia during the card game seemed to have disappeared as well.
Michaels: You are clearly pleased with Foxy.
Zerva: Oh right. What was it you wanted to talk to me about?
Michaels: It is highly probable that it is not important. Still I have learned the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with other members of the crew. I believe I understand Humans and Vulcans reasonably well, but my understanding of other species is inadequate. That you cried during the wedding highlighted that. While Vulcans suppress their feelings far more than others, we are respectful of their feelings. :: beat :: I was concerned that I had caused offense because of my inadequacy.
Zerva: Response
Michaels: ::smiling slightly:: Then no further discussion of the matter is required. I am pleased.
The waitress returned with a plate which she placed on the table. There were three lemon bars.
Michaels: ::nodding:: Thank you again.
The waitress left. Ezra and Lera both took a lemon bar. Lera took the tiniest bite of hers before placing it back on the plate. Foxy was now giving them her full attention. Perhaps Foxy was more interested in food than she was in the stick.
Zerva: Response.
Michaels: The lemon bar is fine. But it contains a good deal of Sucrose. Sugar. Sugar has an intoxicating effect on Vulcans and we limit ourselves to small doses. :: Lera paused for a moment and then picked the lemon back up again. :: Oh. Who cares. It is a wedding after all.
Lera took a large bite, settled back into the chair and allowed herself to relax. There were worse things in life than a mildly intoxicated Vulcan.
Zerva: Response.
Michaels: You have an interesting accent, Ezra. May I call you Ezra? I am unable to place it. It is apparent that you have lived many places. Presumably the Trill home world. Vulcan, perhaps. Somewhere on Earth. Somewhere in Europe?
Zerva: Response
