((Docking Ring 47-A, Just outside the USS Khitomer, Docked Deep Space 33))
Lieutenant Junior Grade Jack Morrow maneuvered his hover chair down the corridor to the docking ring where the USS Khitomer was docked. He glanced down at his PADD, recalling the name Dukul had given him earlier, one Doctor Talia Ohnari; according to the Cardassian JAG, she was a wiz regarding replacement limbs, having one of her own. Jack just wanted to stand up again, and with the inorganic replicators not working on the Ronin, it would take weeks to go through Deep Space 33. They could do it, but that would involve a week's worth of paperwork and then not getting the correct approval, which is different from good old-fashioned red tape.
Getting one aboard a starship was simpler, especially if you were wounded in battle. So here he was at the security checkpoint to gain access to the Khitomer.
Security: Name, Rank, ID.
The security officer was all business, and Jack expected it. Security had been ramped up to the highest alert, and the Alpha Isle was basically a war zone.
Morrow: ::handing him his PADD:: Morrow, Jack, Lieutenant Junior Grade. Judge Advocate General.
When he identified himself as JAG, the man gave him a sour look. Jack wasn’t offended; that was the usual reaction he got. He was pretty sure no one in Starfleet was very fond of JAGs.
Security: What is your purpose today aboard the Khitomer?
Morrow: ::double checking the PADD:: I’m here to see Doctor Talia Ohnari about a leg. ::he looked down at the stump that used to be his left leg::heard she’s one of the best.
Again, he was all business.
Security: All right, you can find her on deck six. Just take a left at the nearest turbolift.
The guard handed him his PADD back, and Jack moved forward down a small hallway, at the end he turned left to the nearest lift.
((Deck 6, Sickbay, USS Khitomer, Docked DS33))
The doors to the sickbay swished open, allowing him to enter sickbay. With it being shore leave, the usual hustle and bustle of the medical department was down to a slow crawl. Jack thought it shouldn’t be hard to track down the Haliian doctor and hopefully a new limb.
A few nurses walked past Jack, who was most likely busy with patients. He needed to find the doctor and introduce himself because she wasn’t expecting him. Typically, he wouldn’t drop by unannounced, but he was in the neighborhood, as they say. Over by a console was another dressed in blue with a medical jacket on, looking over PADDs.
He floated on over in his chair and cleared his throat.
Morrow: Excuse me. Can you tell me where to find Doctor Tahlia Ohnari?
Turning around, she jovially raised a hand.
Ohnari: You found her. How can I help?
He reached out his hand. Talia accepted and shook it warmly.
Morrow: I’m Lieutenant JG Jack Morrow, the JAG assigned to the USS Ronin. According to the JAG aboard DS33, Dukul Nibar, you’re pretty handy regarding replacement limbs.
Jack glanced down at his missing left leg; it felt like it was still there, and it hurt. He rubbed the stump as the pain persisted.
How Talia became a collector of prosthetics was more legend than fact at this point, but she couldn't deny the fascination she had with them. Besides, who didn't love returning mobility and oftentimes, independence to someone?
Ohnari: I see. I assume you've brought me your medical transcripts? I will be more than happy to see what options we have.
He picked up the PADD from his lap and handed it to the doctor.
Morrow: Yes, ma’am, it’s all on the PADD there. ::he smiled::But I’m happy to answer any questions you may have.
Gesturing towards her office, she dipped her head to indicate he should follow her. Once across the threshold, the still moderately bare office met them. But she indicated the open table area. It was a comfortable looking set up, with a replicator For refreshments and various cushioned chairs.
They went to the open table area; he moved a chair to accommodate him and his anti-grav chair..
Ohnari: If you do not mind my asking, why don't you tell me about your injury.
Jack was sure this question was coming; it was all in his jacket, which she held. But those' just words in the file, not straight from the horse's mouth. He felt his mouth start to go dry, and he looked down at his lap, for whatever reason, he couldn’t look her in the eye.
Morrow: The Consortium had boarded us for the second time, and spiderbots were everywhere. So I helped defend the ship. I got a couple before…::long pause:: before one attacked me. I had ended up on my back, and it used one of its spearlike limbs to run one through my right shoulder::he rolled the shoulder, showing discomfort:: and the other through my left leg.
He fell silent; Jack glanced up at the doctor, haunted.
Reaching over, she couldn't help grasping his hand and giving it a light squeeze.
Ohnari: I am sorry for your loss; I commend your actions though of course.
Jack was shaking slightly, breaking out into a cold sweat.
Morrow: S-sorry about that. Anyway, about that leg?
He shook his head to clear the hellscape. Jack knew it would be waiting the next time he tried to close his eye to try and sleep. Hell, Jack couldn’t remember the last time he got more than an hour or two after the sedatives wore off from the surgery.
Although she hated having him relive the moment, having him tell the story helped her piece together a treatment plan that would help his mental health along with the physical.
Ohnari: ::smiling kindly:: About the leg. What is it that you would want the leg to do for you? I ask as we have a few options as far as how we would integrate the prosthetics with you organically.
Morrow: Well, Nurse Rox says I should get a Klingon leg::he chuckled:: I guess, according to her, chicks dig the Klingon leg. Personally, I’m looking for something more practical. Can I get spinning rims?
Ohnari: ::grinning:: sadly, we are limited on the uh…extras….so no rocket booster leg; that I can get legally. ::winking playfully::
Morrow: No hidden phaser in a compartment in the leg? I that might come in handy. If a Judge gets out of hand, I can just stun him. ::he laughed::
There he went with the humor; it was a coping mechanism.
Talia snorted through her laughter. This would work well.
Ohnari: I can't make promises…but we will see what we can do.
Morrow: ::smiling:: In all seriousness, I just want a leg I can walk or run on and not bother me after a round of golf.
Ohnari: ::nodding:: Of course. And while it might sound a little strange, the fact you are having pains is actually a good sign, for us. It means your nerves are still trying to fire, which in our case, will ease the grafting process. So, if you wouldn't mind following me, we will get several scans of your leg, as well as the nerve structure to see how best to go about it.
Standing, she grasped the PADD, flipping through the pages and making small, noncommittal noises as she led him back into the main Sickbay. The Haliian barely spared a glance to the marine in the chair, her fingers already inputting the desired commands on the biobed in front of her.
Ohnari: Do you need some assistance getting on the table?
The question wasn't anything other than an inquiry. She had zero judgment or assumptions on the man's ability.
Jack thought about it for about a second, he wasn’t afraid to ask for help. But this seemed easy and only he would be at fault if he takes a header off the chair onto the floor.
Morrow: ::half smile::It’s all good, doc, I can do it. Just give me a second.
He brought the chair level with the bio-bed; once level he raised the right arm of the chair and using his arms and hands, pushed himself off the chair and transferred to the bed. Once on the bed and situated he let out a long sigh.
Once on the table, the mechanical whirring and clicking began. The readings began compiling with each rotation. The anatomical blueprint of the injury sustained started to form in the holo-readout in front of her.
Ohnari: How are we doing, Lieutenant Morrow?
All the whirring and clicking made him slightly nervous. He felt like James Bond and was about to be interrogated by some nefarious enemy.
oO We have ways of making you talk…Oo
Morrow: ::laying his head back, closing his eyes:: Just f-fine doctor, just a little unnerving all of the whirring and clicking and whatnot. ::he laughed nervously::
Ohnari: Well now, I'll do a little manual examining, please tell me if you feel any discomfort; I can give you a mild analgesic for the exam.
She concentrated most of her examination on the left leg, or what was left of it. If he was being honest, he just wanted it over; he wanted back on his feet and would celebrate once it happened.
Morrow: ::not trying to sound macho:: I should be fine doc::whispered::..I think.
He tried to stifle a sigh and shove it right back down again, but it escaped his lips anyway,
Ohnari: Of course. I am also going to test your nerve response time, see if there is any additional reconstruction needed along the pathways. I would like to try and avoid the painkillers during this point so I can get the most accurate readings. But, I promise I will be swift about it so you don't have to experience any prolonged discomfort. ::preparing the neural probe, it looked like a complicated toothbrush with a dull, rounded tip:: Ready?
