((Muster Station 01B4, PanRisa Cruise Line vessel, Indulgence of Chocolate-Coated Jama'haron))

A female Orion stepped forward, dressed in an officer’s uniform.

Cruise Ship Officer Della: Greetings. My name is Della. Welcome to Muster Station 01B4. May I have your undivided attention? Please stand in an orderly manner and remain silent. Crew members will now guide you on safety procedures, including how to properly don your life suits and emergency breathing apparatus. Please ensure your face is unobscured, look directly at the bot for scanning and state your name and affiliation so that we may record your attendance. This is crucial for our mandatory head count. Again. Thank you for your cooperation.

B’Ella: That bot better not try and poke me with anything or it’s going out the nearest airlock.

She meant that too. She had little use for intrusive bots. Especially ones that wanted to prob in places one would not want.

Morda: Sounds like it’s just a passive scan. I doubt we’re doing Changeling blood screenings.

Maybe not, but still it couldn’t hurt to have those screenings. Just in case.

B’Ella: ::shakes her head:: You’d be surprised what those things will do. Mind you these ones are nothing like the scraps the Ferengi junk dealer I once knew was using the parts for.

B’Ella was handed a mask and looked at the bot briefly. The light from it was just enough not to blind her in the eyes.

Morda: Ouch, wow. Makes me wonder how Klingons get by without tear ducts.

Oh they have their ways. She knew that. She blinked twice just to be sure.

B’Ella: Trust me you don’t want to know.

Morda took their own breathing apparatus and stared down the bot.

Morda: Okay, that was awful. ::Blinking hard:: Yeah, when I close my eyes, I see V’Ger. Kriffing piece of stang robot.

B’Ella did her best not to smile. He clearly didn’t like that light any better than she did. Did that light hurt him more than her? Was he, blinded by the light? Surely he would be okay.

Della: I need a volunteer to assist me in a demonstration on how these work. Any volunteers?

Oh no, she wasn’t about to step forward. No that isn’t her thing. But perhaps. Just perhaps, Ensign Morda was…

Morda: ::muttering:: “Morda, his vision not restored.” B’Ella, I think I speak Tamarian now. ::A pause when there was no response:: B’Ella?

She remained silent as B’Ella and the rest of the crowd at the station took one step back. Tamarian? Hmm. That would be interesting to hear him talking in their language. What would be the most appropriate phrase in this situation as the crowd stepped back? Mirab with sails unfurled.

Della: Ah, thank you passenger ::The sound of someone tapping at a padd:: Talon Morda! Sentient Talon, we appreciate your willingness to demonstrate.

Morda blinked away enough of the after-glow to see they had somehow been left out to dry and become the volunteer. B’Ella remained stoic and unmoving.

B’Ella: Taking one for the team I see? Good luck.

Della: A breathing apparatus would be used if the atmosphere were to become toxic, and permit you to travel from your present location to shelters throughout the ship or a rescue vessel. It will create a seal around your upper torso and provide a breathable atmosphere for up to two hours. Simple pull the breathing hood over your cranium, and its internal sensors will activate the system.

B’Ella listened intently. Keeping her ears sharp and focused as Della spoke.

She watched as Della definitely grabbed Morda’s flimsy breathing apparatus out from his hands. Della then flung it through the air like it was nothing important. Almost like a piece of defective garbage. Next they pulled what looked less like a “hood”, and more like a giant trash bag over Morda’s head. Was she trying to choke the air out of him? That’s when the end of it clamped around Morda’s torso and not their face. But it wasn’t the bag, but rather a forcefield that was part of the breathing hood. From her vantage point it seemed to be working just fine. Who knew something so flimsy looking could do the job of saving lives. Of course it wasn’t as good when compared to a Federation EV suit, but those took too long to don. This would only take seconds if properly used in time.

Della: The constriction field around your torso might be uncomfortable, but it is the equipment’s way of letting you know it is functional and working hard to provide a short-term breathable envelope until you reach an interior life support shelter or a rescue vessel. Continue to breath normally; even if the hood does not fully inflate, it is functioning. Note that this system does not protect against total atmospheric pressure loss, and it is insufficient if we must evacuate the ship in a vacuum. In those cases, you will need a full life suit.

And there it was. Back to the EV suit B’Ella had just thought about. A temporary piece of cheep materials to slap on for a quick fix, but not a permanent solution.

Della: ::Tapping at her padd, then looking up and gesturing to B’Ella:: Sentient B’Ella! ::Handing B’Ella a green container, then pointing to banks of similar boxes mounted up and down the corridor:: Containers like this are mounted near airlocks and emergency egress points, and in clearly marked emergency stores closets throughout the ship.

She was surprised when her name was called.

oO Who me? Oo

She wasn’t expecting this, to be called up to help. But if Della needed an extra pair of hands, she’d do her part.

Della: Sentient B’Ella, if you would kindly open the demonstration case and remove the life preservation suit? You can assist Sentient Talon in donning it. Sentients, just like the breathing hood, you open the life suit and place yourself inside -- your whole body, not just your cranium. It is agnostic as to bioform: bipedal humanoids can step inside as easily as Horta can slide in. The life suit’s systems can integrate with the breathing hood, or you can directly place yourself inside the life suit. The life suit provides several standard time units of breathable atmosphere and pressure, plus protection against many forms of spaceborn radiation. Once inside, press the circular button inside. If assisting another passenger, press the circular outside button. Either will initiate a seal and bioshaping.

Did Della ever take a breath? It sounded as though she was reading through the whole manual of a book, not stoping to breathe.

B’Ella: ::nodding:: Very well

She did as instructed and opened up the case, removing the flimsy life preservation suit. It looked like it wouldn’t work? In her estimation, a Risan condom would work better than this thing. All she had to do was glare at it just right and it would fall apart. She shook her head and stepped forward holding it out. Would it even fit over Morda?

Morda: Want me to step in, or should I assume the fetal position?

B’Ella let out a snort.

B’Ella: ::gives a toothy grin:: Oh I’m sure we can think of something useful that will shock even the most hedonistic Risan lifestyle.

Morda: Response

She held it out so Morda could step into it.

B’Ella: You be surprised the things Risan’s would do.

Morda: Response

Della: Now that the suit has been dawned. The next step is to press the circular button. ::gestures to B’Ella:: Now watch as the suit inflates and forms a protective barrier around Sentient Talon.

She did as instructed, pressing the button on the outside and watched as Morda’s preservation suit filled in around him.

B’Ella: ::grins:: You look like a giant inflatable bubble boy.

Morda: Response
