((Deck 1, Just Outside the Captain’s Ready Room, USS Khitomer))
Thomas gave himself a moment before seeking any type of permission to enter. Was it a big moment for him, to be placed for his first assignment? Yes, but for everyone else on the ship, it was just another day. And judging by the looks he had received, not the best one.
Or maybe he was misinterpreting confusion and lack of recognition as something else. He glanced down at his PADD to confirm that he was, in fact, on board the correct starship, or else this would probably become one of the most awkward conversations of Thomas' life.
Shayne: Come on in!
Thomas straightened out and tried not to tighten his grip on his PADD too much, then walked through the doors.
Melville-Kilpatrick: ::nodding as he addresses them:: Captain, Commander. I'm Ensign Thomas Melville-Kilpatrick. I've been assigned here.
It sounded slightly odd to say that, since it was probably at least a little obvious what his purpose was, but Thomas tried to come across as a little more confident than he actually felt. He watched the officers look at each other, which wasn't exactly a confidence booster.
Hobart: Response
Shayne: Your orders?
Melville-Kilpatrick: Here, sir.
Hobart: Response
Thomas passed over the PADD to Captain Shayne's waiting hand without much of a fuss. Mostly because he himself had just attempted to double-check everything, just in case he had somehow ended up in the wrong place.
He watched as the captain looked over the PADD, searching for signs of...well, anything, really. Thomas knew that he didn't have the most impressive record out there, but he'd managed to get this far. Surely he wasn't about to be sent back to the training program. He was almost certain he hadn't checked that particular box.
Shayne: What’s your specialty, Ensign?
Melville-Kilpatrick: Medical, Captain. ::after a second of thinking:: I studied biology as an undergraduate.
Hobart: Response
He felt, for some reason, as though he had something to prove. It was his first day, and while he didn't want to be remembered for something ridiculous, he also wanted to make a good first impression.
Melville-Kilpatrick: I also spent a few rotations in emergency medicine during my medical school days.
Hobart/Shayne: Response
Melville-Kilpatrick: I've never been on a New Orleans class ship before. It’s quite nice, from what I’ve seen so far.
Hobart/Shayne: Response
Melville-Kilpatrick: Well, I’m sure I’ll be able to adjust. Medical bays tend to have the same things in them. If there's anything I can do at the moment...
He trailed off. In an ideal world, a world where no one was ill or injured, he would have very little to do at all. But there were a variety of reasons that a medical officer would need to be kept busy. He just hoped he was capable of keeping up with it all.
Hobart/Shayne: Response
