((Deck 6, Sickbay, USS Khitomer))
Ohnari: ::snorting:: We've got several orderlies and nurses, and a few emergency first responders....but it's usually bare bones on the MD side. The senior Science officer I was talking about, Lieutenant Ras El'Heem, used to be in this department, but transitioned after...an incident with needing a replacement hand. We're pretty thin out here in the Isles...But what is Starfleet without a little challenge...?
Melville-Kilpatrick: ::nodding:: I wouldn't have signed up if it was all easy. Not that I wouldn't appreciate a little help...you'd think with so many people around, they might want to keep a few extra doctors around, too.
The part about not signing up for an easy job was a lie, but if it helped improve what others thought about him...well, it was a harmless lie. Who wouldn't want an easy job that meant you got to see all types of different planets? Now, if they'd told him he was guaranteed to die, he'd certainly have decided to stay in North Dakota.
Ohnari: Actually, it's pretty standard on most Starships currently in the fleet. Especially after the Frontier day fallout...we lost a lot of people. Most of us offered our time and skills at the various hospitals on bases across the territory. We make do.
He remembered that. He'd been lucky that his family had been safe, that he hadn't lost anybody. An impressive feat, since quite a few of them were Starfleet. His question had toed the line enough. He was most certainly not going to ask about anyone she knew who she lost during that time.
Melville-Kilpatrick: My dad mentioned that it was a rough time. He's a nurse, actually.
Thomas left out that they hadn't been talking too much lately. Both of them had been rather busy. He turned his head to look at the Klingon nurse when she entered. He waved a little, but she seemed a little more focused on what she was doing.
Ohnari: Ah, speaking of nurses, that was Othin, ::speaking secretively:: Damn fine nurse, a little...uh...jagged around the edges, don't take it personally.
Melville-Kilpatrick: ::keeping his voice down:: I'll try.
Othin: ::bellowing:: Commander! The marrow. While it's still fresh.
Thomas grinned weakly in response to the CMO's apologetic smile. He'd met a few Klingons. Not any he yet considered friends, but enough that he knew the kind of energy that many of them had.
Ohnari: See? But now that she's returned, we're going to be preparing a transplant matrix. Two of our patients are...uh...genetic matches with myself and Lieutenant Semara from science. ::wincing:: Also Commander Dewitt from engineering....it's a...long story I don't quite understand myself. But I'll need you to take a sample from me as well. The patients in question have had chronic exposure to Sencha radiation in various concentrations. Aplastic Anemia, Osteoporosis stage four, pretty much exactly what you would expect.
Thomas tried to take in the information about the patients in case he was expected to have any hand in treating them later. Also the names of the people they were genetic matches for, but there were probably hundreds of people on the Khitomer. Remembering them all would be a task in and of itself. Wait, had she said he needed to take a sample from her?
He followed her to the lab and was met with the strange sight of a person who seemed very capable of destruction organizing equipment that seemed fragile in her hands. He glanced at the lieutenant commander, not entirely sure this wasn't a joke being played on him as the new guy.
Ohnari: Nurse Othin, meet our new doctor, Ensign Melville-Kilpatrick. ::her eyes narrowed sharply:: Be nice.
Othin: ::scoffing:: I am always nice. Those with weak constitutions and low honor confuse it for hostility. Everyone knows when I am hostile....::The towering Klingon gave a head tip towards the new doctor.:: Welcome, do not eat my pudding.
Melville-Kilpatrick: I'll stay away from anything I haven't personally replicated myself. Or that someone isn't handing to me.
Now all of his bases were covered. He turned to Lieutenant Commander Ohnari, about to ask if he'd heard her correctly earlier, when he heard a different voice.
B’Ella: Hello? Anyone here?
Melville-Kilpatrick: That wouldn't be one of the previously mentioned patients?
Surely they would have known where the medical staff were. Assuming that his new CMO and nurse weren't hiding out from their patients.
Ohnari/Othin: Response
Thomas stuck his head out of the lab to look at the interloper. Or potential patient. Another Klingon.
Melville-Kilpatrick: ::slightly confused:: Um, hello?
Ohnari/Othin: Response
B’Ella: I was told to report to sickbay by the operations officer.
Melville-Kilpatrick: For what reason?
Thomas' mind immediately went to needlesticks and other hazards common to his own field. Then again, he was addressing someone in yellow. The dangers were probably slightly different.
Ohnari/Othin: Response
B’Ella: I was feeling a bit dizzy just moments ago in the operations cupboard. I’m not sure if there’s anything you can do for me?
Operations cupboard? He really should have paid more attention during his training. He had no idea what that meant. He imagined a tiny box on the wall filled with wires, which was almost certainly not what the ensign before him was talking about if she had been in it.
Ohnari/Othin: Response
Melville-Kilpatrick: Was there something hazardous in the cupboard? An exposed wire, maybe?
That was a possibility. Toxic gas? Would Sencha radiation make anyone feel dizzy?
Melville-Kilpatrick: And...maybe you'd like to have a seat? ::turning to Ohnari and Othin:: Sorry if I'm overstepping. I like to help out.
If he was going against anything, he'd like to know sooner rather than later. At the same time, it was part of his oath to help others, especially if they were feeling ill.
Ohnari/Othin/B'Ella: Response
Thomas took a few more steps towards the other ensign, indicating that she should probably take a seat on an exam bed. Mostly so that she didn't fall over, since she'd complained about feeling dizzy.
Melville-Kilpatrick: Oh! I'm Ensign ::hesitates:: Doctor? ::pauses for a second:: Melville-Kilpatrick, by the way. In case you were wondering about the stranger attempting to give you medical care. And ::tilting his head towards Ohnari and Othin:: I'm sure you know these two better than I do. Nurse? Commander?
He didn't really want to be asking for help, but some people weren't as comfortable with strangers as they were with people they'd met even once before. And since this seemed to be a member of the crew that he had just heard had all received gluteal injections...Well, maybe it was better to be the new face in this equation.
Ohnari/Othin/B'Ella: Response
Melville-Kilpatrick: Erm. Do you have any other symptoms, then, or is it just the dizziness? ::turning to Ohnari, slightly quieter:: Is this sort of thing common?
Ohnari/Othin/B'Ella: Response
