((Atrium, Indulgence of Chocolate-Coated Jama’haron))
Morgan: Unless you have more pressing matters, join me. Perhaps we can simply talk.
He took a deep breath, scanned the vast room, crowded with people of a dozen different species. But none of them were Nausicaan. That individual had escaped him leaving him with no plausible excuse for not obeying her order to sit and "simply talk." But why would she want to talk to him? If she had never encountered a Locet before then there would be little to gain by talking with him. He glanced at the chair, hesitated a moment, pulled it away from the table, and sat. His posture almost certainly reflected the fact that he was uncomfortable in her presence so he forced himself to feign being relaxed.
Khitsu: Simply talk? I'm not certain that there is much for us to talk about. We have very little common ground.
Morgan: That's fair. I suspect you know I'm not reading you, mostly because you can't be read like that, but also because that's not how this works.
She smiled. He did not return the smile. A waiter approached but Arden held up a hand to deflect him.
Khitsu: :: to the waiter :: No. Thank you. I don't need anything. oO I won't be here long. Oo
Morgan: Besides, your body language is far more telling than anything you could be thinking. It is unfortunate that you are so uncomfortable.
Khitsu: Indeed? Then perhaps, you can tell me how it does work. Yes, I know that you are not reading my mind. I'm unaware of what exactly your people "see" assuming "see" is the proper verb. In a location like this, is it a "fog" of individual auras? Is it a cacophony of "voices" blending together in a constant drone? I am curious about what you "see" or "hear" or whatever the best term would be when you "look" at me.
Morgan: You'd be surprised honestly.
Khitsu: Before we go too much further, you should be aware that the vast majority of Locet have no particular :: beat :: mental abilities. Mine are far more mundane, and unusual even among those. Some members of my family :: even saying that single word, family, evoked painful memories :: had very ... strong... abilities. There is probably not much a linguist unfamiliar with Locet could gain from a conversation with me.
She smiled again and there was no hint of aggressiveness to it. He tilted his head slightly to the right. Why chat with him? Had he already given away too much by allowing himself to converse with her? What was her objective? He would need to be more skillful in what he revealed and what he hid.
Morgan: Well, you're not giving yourself nearly enough credit there. I have already gained much, and perhaps you can walk away with something as well.
Khitsu: Is that true?
Morgan: What I see, I see with my eyes. I see you when I look at you. I see each individual when I look at them. When they share the telepathic ability, it simply adds depth to what is seen and heard. In most cases it's like an extra dimension, or a topping on a sundae. Like a swirl of cerulean in an ocean of teal waters, or crimson clouds in a twilight sky. Some pointed thoughts provide specific images, when shared. Others are feelings that convey experiences.
She waved a hand at the people at all around them. Arden did not take his eyes off of her. There was no particular reason to suspect this individual Betazoid of wishing him harm but he was not going to take the risk.
Morgan: Here is like the central location of a swirl of color, all mingling but never quite mixing. Mostly it's emotional waves; some are strong and some are weak but all carry with them a detached piece of a moment.
Khitsu: Colors? Emotions? oO Had it been their fear that had betrayed my family to the Betazoid and her team of Purifiers who had slaughtered them? There must have been something more than that. Perhaps this Betazoid is lying to me. Perhaps not. Perhaps there is as much variation in their telepathic abilities as there are among my people. Oo
Morgan: How is it any different from you feeling whatever it is that you feel under the gaze of others? Or how they feel when met with your own look.
Khitsu: I see individuals. Some of them are fundamentally good. Others are not. I see their actions. Their emotions? Who can possibly know how the millions of cultures and species in the universe physically express their emotions? Humans show their teeth when they are happy or pleased but they also smile when they are trying deceive you. Some species show their teeth when they are angry or about to attack. The subtleties are beyond my ken. Their words? Words are cheap and easy. Individuals can lie forever. Their actions are more reliable than their words.
Morgan: Response.
Khitsu: There are patterns that seem to apply by species. Vulcans generally act in a logical manner but not all. Klingons tend to be concerned with honour, as they define it, and prone to angry, violent actions. But not all. Humans. Humans tend to be most concerned with those close to them. The closer the more concerned. But not all. Betazoids. I mean no offense, ma'am, but the ones I have seen in action :: long pause :: have not made a favorable "impression" on me. I must assume that impression may be true for some but not all.
Morgan: Response.
