Michaels: ::whispering to Ezra :: I hope I have not ruined lunch. I could not help myself.

Zerva: ::whispering:: It’s okay. You didn’t.

Michaels: For you at least. For Ras... I am not certain.

Zerva: ::continuing to whisper, squeezing her hand again:: I’m sure Ras understands.

There were so many conversations going on around the table she could not keep up with all of them. There were a few constants. Ezra's comforting hand. The pleasant mix of laughter and the presence of so many friends. Were they friends or were they mere acquaintances? Other than Ezra, none of them raised to the level of her school friends. But then she had known Lori and Lynda for most of her life. Lera shook her head. That was an inappropriate standard. She pushed the thought and attempted to focus on the conversation again.

Zerva: ::to the server:: Thank you.

Lera did not who it was that asked the question but the the conversations ended abruptly when someone asked Ras about leaving the medical department.

El'Heem: Yeah. The rumors are true. I am moving to Science. ::winking at Richard::

Ezra nearly choked on his soup. He jerked his hand away and, momentarily, Lera worried about him.

Michaels: :: to Ezra :: Are you all right?

R. Matthews: Say what now? You’re, you, dude!

El’Heem: Yea I’m going to submit the paperwork soon. Time for a change of pace.

Zerva: ::to Lera on his almost soup spill:: I’m fine thank you. ::to Ras:: Science is lucky to have you. I’m sure the two of you will be up to no good. Maybe it’s time for me to switch over to blue as well? ::chuckles:: Ohh we could call ourselves the Blues Brothers!

oO What? Oo

Michaels: The blues brothers? What brought that up?

El’Heem: Whatever would security do without you, though? At least Chief Ohnari can still hold down the fort. What’s the Blues Brothers?

Zerva: It’s an old earth TV movie that derived from a sketch comedy show. My brother showed it to me. These two brothers dressed in dark suits and sunglasses go about having an adventure of their own singing and dancing, trying to raise money and save an orphanage.

El’Heem: Sounds…vintage.

Lera frowned. She tipped her head from side to side when she finally understood. Blue. The color of science department uniforms. Two male friends. Brothers. The blues brothers. The connection to orphanages... were there still such things?... escaped her.

Banks: Actually… help a newbie out? ::beat:: Lera, I know, is Engineering. ::to Zerva:: Ezra Zerva, Security. ::to El’Heem:: Ras El’Heem, Science, since you just said so. ::to Richard:: Richard… Matthews? And from the wink, I’m guessing Science as well? ::to the ‘Other Matthews’:: And here I’m drawing a blank. All I know is ‘Other Matthews’.

R. Matthews: HA! :: He tried to cover his bark of laughter by taking a drink. But just ended up blowing bubbles into his shake :: Ha- hehe - Other Matthews. :: He let out a sigh as the laughter died down. Grabbing a napkin from the table to dab at his eyes :: Oh that’s perfect.

Zerva: ::shakes his head at Richard:: Behave now. ::to Banks:: That’s pretty accurate on the departments actually.

Any: Response

Charles: I’m in Tactical, and Charlie will be fine… ::smiles:: …I’m sorry, I missed your name…?

Banks: Response

R. Matthews: :: The giggling started up again as he whispered to himself :: I like Other Matthews more, new nickname maybe?

El’Heem: ::whispering to himself as he sat up and stared at the table:: Sha’cal. Read the room, Richard.

Any: Responses

Charles: Hi, Juliet. And you’re from Luna?

Banks: Response

Any: Responses

Charlie: ::nods:: Born and raised… well, partly raised.

Mattia: Your drink, sir. ::to the table:: The meals shouldn’t be too long.

Zerva: ::raising a brow:: Actually I’m curious? Who else here is from earth or its lunar moon? I think we all call the Sol System home don’t we?

El’Heem: Uhh no.

Any: Responses

El’Heem: I’m from Kalandra. Sylvana Prime. ::clearing his throat:: Sorry. When did you get to Earth, Ezra?

Zerva: ::Nods:: My family moved to earth when I was 11. We live in California. Just on the outskirts of San Francisco actually. What about the rest of you?

Michaels: It depends on how you define "from." I was born on a colony ship, spent my early years alone with my human parents on Last Hope, and spent most of my life in Texas.

Any: Responses

Zerva: Way out here in the Alpha Isles and I guess we’re a bit closer to home than we realize.

El’Heem: ::annoyed laugh:: I’m closer to home out here than you all are.

The meals arrived.

Zerva: Ohh Foods here!

Any: Responses

Mattia: Okay, let’s get this all sorted out shall we? Buttered breadsticks for everyone. ::places them in the center of the table. Then picks up the plate of stuffed mushrooms:: I believe this is yours ::to Ras:: How does everything look?

Any: Responses

Mattia: Wonderful. Can I grab anything else? ::gesturing to Ras’s empty mug:: Another ale for you, sir?

He looked from the waiter to his glass and then back again, shaking his head.

El’Heem: Better not. Thank you.

Any: Responses

Michaels: :: to Ezra:: Having given the matter due consideration, and I hope you will not take this as a rejection, but I believe I will need my right hand for dinner.

Ezra smiled at her.

El’Heem: I think…I oughta head out. I’m not feeling to well. ::standing and gesturing to his food:: feel free. Uhhh yea. Thanks for the invite.

((OOC This is not I originally intended this to work out. But I've invested the time writing it, so... ))

Ras got up and had nearly made it to the door when Lera caught him

Michaels: Before you leave, I have one small thing to say and I apologise if it is too maudlin. ::beat:: You saved my life out there and I have not had a chance to thank you properly for that. ::beat:: Thank you. I am eternally in your debt.

Ras nodded, turned and left. Lera stared at the closed door for what seemed like an eternity, feeling inadequate and deeply saddened. She had messed everything up yet again. Perhaps being human in a Vulcan body was the wrong choice after all. Perhaps an emotionless Vulcan was better.

((Time skip to after the meal))

Although Lera had no complaints about the quality of her meal, her desert was no nearly as sugar-free as she had hoped. She was definitely starting to feel the sucrose in her "Sugar-Free Ice Cream." Lera had pushed that away after only a few bites. It was a pleasant buzz much like the last time, That was a lemon bar at Connor and Ayemet's wedding. Lera laughed a half laugh that could easily have been mistaken for a snort. One of the interesting dichotomies of being essentially human in a Vulcan body. Ethanol barely affected her at all but sucrose... Sucrose was a different matter. If she ate anywhere near the amount of Halloween candy that Lori and Lynda routinely consumed, Lera would be would be in Sickbay for a week.

Lera stood up and immediately drew the attention of everyone at the table.

Michaels: I wish to propose another toast. Yes. I know. It is probably the sugar speaking. But it necessary. This time I am proposing a toast to one of our 'cheerful' band. I think it is important that you understand what happened out at the probe.

Any: Response.

Michaels: Some of you know that I had an EV suit failure while examining Commander T'Dara's probe... which was really a ship killing weapon. The breathing air system of my suit failed and I blacked out. Many of you, I suspect, are aware that being unconscious while outside a shuttle well away from the ship is a sub-optimal set of circumstances. You may not know that Lt. Ras El'Heem donned his own suit and rescued me.

She held up her glass and nodded toward Ras' now empty chair.

Any: Response

Michaels: You may not know what happened next. Lt. Ras El'Heem, who has very little, if any, engineering training undertook the task of disabling the probe. Despite suffering a grievous injury and with just seconds to spare before the probe would have fired again... which would have certainly destroyed the ship... the only survivor's would have been Ensign Prix and myself ... and we would have perished in the Ouchita... Lt. Ras El'Heem succeeded.

Any: Response

Michaels: We are here today only because of the actions of one individual, Ras El'Heem. Every man, woman and child on Khitomer, :: quick glance at Ezra:: every dog, fruit bat, and several previously unidentified bacteria, every house plant, every fungus, and every tree in the arboretum on Khitomer are alive today only because of what he did.

Any: Response

Michaels: If it were in my power I would award him a medal but it is not. That would be insufficient anyway. The best I can do at the moment, is to propose another toast. To Lieutenant Ras El'Heem, my hero. The savior of the USS Khitomer.

Any: Response
