Ohnari: Ah...it seems a few things are just...mildly out of place. ::turning:: Captain Rana, would it at all be possible for you to, um, shed some light on how to dissipate or, uh, render the filaments neutral? I'm afraid our differing physiology puts us at a disadvantage...they tend to be a little painful when accidentally touching.

Rana: Hm? Ah. Allow me.

The sound and action produced by Rana to neutralize the filaments was far more complicated than anything Thomas could've come up with.

Melville-Kilpatrick: Oh, sound. Of course.

El'Heem: We surmised that the filaments were not unlike an immune system response, but I didn’t assume it was reflexive.

Ohnari: If I may ask, these...filaments, what purpose do they serve?

Rana: They are a part of our nebular defensive system, Doctor. And like everything in the nebula, they need to be able to act and communicate, as well as respond to the environment around them.

Melville-Kilpatrick: Everything? The whole system is both communication and defense?

Ohnari: That is fascinating. A tactile communication system...I imagine with your exoskeletons, the information can be provided without the mild abrasions it seems to cause our varied crew. Does it report directly back to your ship?

Rana: Indeed. I believe even now my crew is monitoring the filaments.

Thomas couldn't help but wonder how much of them the Velithari crew had already heard or maybe it was that they had to touch the filaments? He wasn't sure, and he didn't want to ask.

El'Heem: The sheer magnitude of your symbiosis is astounding. So, the question remains, was the cloud and the Jorogumo for that matter, genetically engineered by the Velithari or are they a whole other species you’ve grown to live in harmony with?

Rana: Do these questions help to clarify your understanding of my physiology or to end the matter at hand? ::frustrated:: Must everything be an interrogation?

For some reason, Thomas was almost reminded of the interrogation he'd conducted with the Sheliak. He was speaking with a thinking being, and part of his oath was to make sure that everyone was feeling good. Now, he was no counselor, but even doctors needed to have good bedside manner.

Ohnari: ::quietly to Ras:: Dial it back a bit...

Melville-Kilpatrick: Sorry about that, Captain.

El’Heem: No, you’re absolutely right. There will be times for more questions later. It is difficult to turn a curious mind off. ::beat:: Before, you mentioned that when the Lattice Alliance arrived, there was very little effect on the cloud from the Sencha radiation. I believe that could be the result of the cloud itself preventing the Alliance from firing at full power.

Rana: It is possible. The biological component has evolved over time and responded to outsiders, with our help and the assistance of our technological leads.

El’Heem: Have you any reports of what the long range volley they are using now, is doing to the cloud?

Rana: Those reports would be routed to Vidya or Alya first, or a crew member in their unit, then directed to me if their consequences were important. I suppose I could make contact with Jorogumo to ask, if you truly thought it necessary.

Ohnari: That may be something our engineers and the first officer will determine; I'm sure Vidya could assist if they need it.

Rana: My apologies, I realize this comes across as rude to your people. ::addressing Ohnari directly:: I believe your...intelligence officer? Yes? She stated that it was possible that this warp drive that you and this Alliance share could do significant damage to the nebula. More damage than the Sencha.

Ohnari: ::nodding:: That is certainly a high priority concern. One I am certain is being addressed, how best to extract ourselves and avoid the Lattice Alliance causing any harm to the nebula. You will have to forgive me but my field of expertise would be pertaining to your physical selves and by extension, possibly the Jorogumo as well since there seems to be a biological symbiosis.

Melville-Kilpatrick: I guess once we figure out what might have an impact on the connection between you and Jorogumo, if there is one, that is, then we can, ah, figure everything else out.

El'Heem: Response

Rana: If this is true, I believe my question would not be the effects of the Sencha on my people, but of the warp drive. We have lived with the microorganisms in the nebula for quite some time.

Ohnari: Lieutenant El'Heem is our chief science officer, while myself and Doctor Mellville-Kirkpatrick may focus on the protection of your people, Ras here might have more of an insight on the nebula's protection.

Rana: I have limited-to-no experience with either of these technologies, but whatever prevents harm to my people is what is best for them, and that is what I want.

Ohnari: Now, if you would allow, I'd like to take a few scans, and with your permission, a microscopic sample of your physiology. I plan to be the least invasive as possible. I will take the samples to upload into our system as our safety "base", then I plan to expose a part of the sample to the replicated Sencha radiation. I assure you it is diagnostic in nature and completely contained. There is no risk of contamination, but it would help us to see how your physiology reacts to the waves.

Melville-Kilpatrick: ::pulling up an abbreviated form of the system on a PADD to show Rana:: This is the kind of data we'll be looking at.

El'Heem/Rana: Response

Ohnari: If it makes you more comfortable, I can provide my own scans and tissue samples, so you see what is being done and make your decision. Our physiology differs drastically, so our current methodology of a deep tissue monitored release inoculation may not work for you at all. As you were informed earlier, the Sencha waves are devastating to all organic life, similar to other radiations. The added component of affecting certain species telepathic communication is another complication. For example, my species the Haliians are what we call empathic. We have a low level sense of heightened emotions which is enhanced by touch. While we are capable of telepathic communications, to isn't innate. It requires a ritual and a lot of preparation. Whereas our intel officer has the innate ability and the effects are instantaneous.

Thomas hadn't even considered what kind of telepathic or empathic abilities a Velithari might have. He tried to keep a better hold of himself. The Velithari on board Khitomer were guests.

Ohnari: With your permission, I will demonstrate the scan myself and sample process so we can proceed.

El'Heem/Rana: Response

Before any of the demonstrations could occur, there was an interruption. Thomas looked up to see one familiar face and one not-so-familiar face.

Naxell: Apologies for interrupting, Doctor, but I’ve come to speak with Captain Rana about the Jorogumo and its combat capabilities. ::an open hand indicting:: Also to introduce Ensign Eeso Ayi, our fresh Science Officer who has not yet received her Sencha implant.

Melville-Kilpatrick: That's an important one. We were just talking to Captain Rana here about it.

El'Heem/Rana/Ohnari/Eeso: Response

Melville-Kilpatrick: Well, hers might not be an implant, but the concept is similar.

El'Heem/Rana/Ohnari/Eeso/Naxell: Response

Melville-Kilpatrick: Oh, sorry. Dr. Melville-Kilpatrick. Interesting circumstances to meet, and all.

El'Heem/Rana/Ohnari/Eeso/Naxell: Response
