(( OOC: after discussing it with the staff, I’m splitting the party to keep things manageable. 7 people in a scene is perhaps a bit much. ))

(( Bridge Deck 1, USS Khitomer, Ceram Archipelago ))

They had established a commlink, and it seemed to be holding.

C. Dewitt: =/\= This is Connor Dewitt of the starship Khitomer. =/\=

There was no immediate response, and the commander tried again.

C. Dewitt: =/\= We are not hostile. We are currently experiencing navigational and power interference within the region. If there is anyone receiving this… we request assistance. =/\=

After a few moments, the viewscreen flickered on. Korras adjusted the controls to clear the image up slightly, adapting the Khitomer’s systems to the unknown systems of the signal they were now receiving. Apparently, the same was being done on the other end, as the signal shifted slightly towards their own.

Velithari Comms Officer: =/\= Identify yourself. =/\=

Semara: :: Barely a whisper :: You think they have indoor plumbin' to add to the collection?

Stros: Response

C. Dewitt: =/\= My name is Conno… =/\=

Velithari Comms Officer: =/\= ::sharply:: Unacceptable. =/\=

The sharpness in the tone caused Korras’ heartrate to increase slightly. As much as he tried to control that, he was still a Klingon, and a challenge was still a challenge.

Velithari Comms Officer: =/\= I will not address a male. You will present a female authority or this channel will be terminated. =/\=

C. Dewitt: =/\= Of course. ::voice lowered:: I am merely assisting the command authority aboard this vessel.=/\=

Korras looked behind him, to see the commander waving for his wife to take over.

C. Dewitt: =/\= Thi… Uhm… This is Captain Ayemet Dewitt of the USS Khitomer. =/\=

A.Dewitt: That will do Connor. Take your place to my side.

So, apparently a matriarchal society. First contact was tricky enough without complications like that, and for all intents and purposes, currently they had no choice but to play along. Korras just kept his head down, even though he was outside the view of the viewscreen camera.

Stros: Response

Velithari Comms Officer: =/\= Acceptable. ::pause:: Stand by to talk to the Captain. =/\=

In an attempt to recover the illusion of competence, she straightened out into practiced poise, and turned to put her back to the viewscreen so she could lean in to give what little last-minute intelligence she could to Ayemet without her voice being transmitted.

Semara: :: To the rear of the bridge, leaning in toward Ayemet. :: Guess the rumors are true and these are the amazonian predators we heard about...  Intel only knows a' one encounter.  A woman called "Lioness of Lowka."  Claims she survived by playin' it up to their matriarchal foibles, and even managed to barter for salvaged weapons.  :: To Ayemet. :: But she could'a been lyin' 'bout that last part.

Semara: :: Hushed :: Can we triangulate the comm signal?  A directional scan might cut through the nebula 'nough get us a tactical analysis if they're close enough.

Might as well put some of her science skills to use.   Then she put on a smile and turned to the screen, hands behind her back.  Sitting in any of the three chairs felt like too much.

Korras nodded, and got to work. Deciding not to speak up, as he could not be sure that his voice would not be picked up, he sent a message to Stros’ console. ‘Feeding extra power to the sensors. Working on freeing up more.’

Stros: Response

A new figure entered into view. It seemed very much female, but also very much alien, sporting a iridescent exoskeleton, along with an armored shell, claws, and mandibles. It seemed like the females of this species were also their warriors.

Rana: =/\= I hope I am addressing the leader of your ship this time. =/\=

A.Dewitt: =/\= I am Captain Ayemet Dewitt of the Starship Khitomer. =/\=

Rana: =/\= Your male is quite unrestrained, Captain. Perhaps you should consider revoking his communications status. =/\=

Korras did his best to ignore the conversation, and managed to deactive some systems that were currently unused, like the Gymnasium, feeding that power to the sensors.

C.Dewitt / Stros: Response

A.Dewitt =/\= :glancing at Connor: We are bonded, and he took my name :beat: it was my gift to him. =/\=

Rana: =/\= Very well. Tell me, Captain AyemetDewitt, what is your purpose here?

Stros seemed to have made good use of the extra power, and something began to show on sensors. Korras assisted with clearing the image up.

C.Dewitt / Stros: Response

A.Dewitt: =/\= We were investigating the ship before us as it appeared to have been badly damaged, and then we appeared to be caught by the anomaly we now find ourselves in. If you cannot assistance we can be on our way. =/\=

Semara: :: Quietly, to Connor :: That's a ship?

It was a massive thing, but also remarkedly insectoid. It was mostly biological in origin, and it would not surprise Korras if it was a Hive. A Hive-ship?

He was looking for weapon systems, but it was difficult to pick out any specific subsystems in a biological ship.

Rana: =/\= The ship before? A hostile, it seems. Believe me, I am having my women investigate it as well.=/\=

C.Dewitt / Korras / Rana / Stros: Response

Amelia carefully caught Connor's, then Ayemet's gaze, checking for permission before stepping up just behind Ayemet to offer a little additional morsel that might just be tantalizing enough to the other captain to convince her to be patient.

Purely automatically, she curtsied to the alien.  Hopefully it wasn't some forbidden gesture in their society...

Semara: =/\= Pleasure to make your acquaintance.  :: Beat :: For some time now, we've been dealin' with invasions into our own territory from the same pair of species you've expertly dispatched.  We didn't want 'em establishin' a foothold in this nebula, but it seems we didn't need to be worried. =/\=

Korras figured they needed some better way of communicating among themselves, instead of sending messages over their consoles, and sent a message to the commander and Stros suggesting they move to the conference room. They could listen in to the conversation from there, but also talk openly. Plus, he could set up the consoles there to mirror their consoles on the bridge.

A. Dewitt / C.Dewitt / Stros: Response

Rana: =/\= You have experience with these species, then? =/\=

As he received messages back, he set up the controls to mirror their consoles, and worked his way over to the other side of the bridge, to the conference room. It must have been an interesting sight, seeing the tall Klingon almost on his hands and feet to stay out of sight of the viewscreen camera.

Vidya/Semara/A. Dewitt/C.Dewitt/Stros: Response

Rana: =/\= We have only recently encountered them ourselves. They are...relatively simple. Perhaps we do indeed have a common goal. =/\=

Those were the last words Korras heard directly from the alien ship, as he stepped into the conference room. First things first, on the largest console there, he set up a side-by-side of the alien ship and the bridge, so they could listen in. then, he set one console up for science, and another for Ops, and got to work on the latter as the other two males from the bridge stepped in.

C.Dewitt/Stros: Response

Korras: Apologies if my suggestion was too.. forward. However, I figured we would work more efficiently if we are able to communicate verbally.

C.Dewitt/Stros: Response

Korras: I have started an analysis of the alien ship, but the sensors have difficulty identifying the individual systems. It sees it all mostly as one lifeform. That, combined with the interference from the nebula, is making it very difficult to analyze properly.

C.Dewitt/Stros: Response

An idea struck him. What they needed was a medical tricorder.

Korras: If it is a lifeform.. perhaps the medical systems are better equipped to analyze it?

C.Dewitt/Stros: Response

TBC
