((Holodeck 1, USS Khitomer))
C. Dewitt: Ayemet? What is this?
She smiled.., walking up to him and putting her arm around his waist. For a moment they looked out down the hill towards the lake. The night was clear, stars shining down through a cloudless sky and it was almost a shame to spoil that perfect instant.
A. Dewitt: :quietly: It’s our home.
C.Dewitt: ::a long quiet breath:: Ayemet… It’s wonderful. You built us a home. ::a breath, not quite steady:: I do not know what to say. I would like to try, but I…
Ayemet looked at Connor, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes
A.Dewitt: I’ll explain everything when we get there. :beat: Race you!
Setting off once again she ran down the hill towards her destination, her home.
A.Dewitt: :shouting behind her: I told you a chair was involved!
C.Dewitt: ::a startled laugh, breaking into a jog after her:: This does not at all feel like a chair, Jacin Ayemet.
Once again her feet flew across the ground as she sprinted down the hillside over the bumps and clumps of long grass, over the roots of ancient trees that had pushed their way to the surface over the eons. She felt freedom and joy, both unadulterated by any worries or tempered by the reality of the Isles.
She reached the porch of the house and collapsed onto the wooden steps giggling uncontrollably as Connor sat down beside her. Her breath still fast and deep she reached across and kissed him.
A.Dewitt: Welcome home husband, what do you think of it?
She gazed at him as he surveyed his new surroundings. She could feel his emotions, his wonder as he took in every detail she had meticulously prepared and created.
It was enough to simply watch him, his eyes so full of amazement , She looked at their home. It was enough. She needed no words, no praise. Just him.
C.Dewitt: ::softly:: I think… I have been holding a lot of things at arm’s length for a long time. ::breat:: I think this is the first thing in a while I do not want to hold there. I think I love it.
She took the offered hand, as they rose and walked over to the door almost cautiously, as opening it night break some wonderful enchantment she had placed upon them and it. Her thumb gently stroked the back of his hand, a silent reassurance that all would be okay.
A.Dewitt: Open it sailor : pause and playfully adding: of course technically you should carry me over the threshold.
C. Dewitt: ::quietly:: This really feels like home.
A. Dewitt: Wherever you are it’s home.
She meant it too. Felt it with every fibre of her body. She thought back to those days where she mistook a reluctance to leave his responsibilities behind and settle down on Bajor as a sign of not truly loving her. She was a fool. It was never about that. It was about her loving someone completely, unconditionally, purposely. Connor’s quiet loyalty to all those he served with was a sign not of partial love but of complete devotion, devotion to the point of sacrifice. The least she could do is to be there with him.
That was why the chair that he now made his way to was there. The one piece of furniture in the current room that wasn’t a photonic recreation . A reminder that he was loved, not just by her , but by so many.
C. Dewitt: It’s my dad’s, isn’t it?
Connor felt his eyes getting watery as he noticed the familiar fabric under his fingers.
A. Dewitt: :simply: I know how much he means to you. It’s not a hologram so if you want we can move it to our quarters. Wherever you want it.
C. Dewitt: Computer, cancel all appointments for First Officer Connor Dewitt for today. Reschedule for tomorrow.
She smiled, her eyes brimming with tears. The past few months had been difficult for them both. Challenges had been met and overcome but inevitably it had taken a toll on them. Not anymore. She would see to it that Connor would never doubt that his family and his home was not a fixed place but a feeling that he carried with him always.
C. Dewitt: Show me the rest of it. All of it.
Taking his hand she led him through the back of the front room and through a weathered wooden swing door Fay creaked as it swung open and closed.
A. Dewitt: So this is the kitchen where you will cook me a variety of food , all of which will be delicious.
C.Dewitt: Response.
Ayemet laughed playfully pushing Connor before walking over to the open top range and large sink next to it.
A.Dewitt: You love cooking and I thought it can be somewhere where you can relax and be creative. We can even have dinner parties if you want. That would be nice wouldn’t it?
C.Dewitt: Response
A.Dewitt: The pie!!!
She turned suddenly to the stove door and putting on two oven gloves which resembled exocomps carefully pulled out a tin dish in which sat a pie, its’ crust a dark golden color, the bubbling of the filling distinctly audible.
She placed it carefully on the large kitchen table discarding the oven gloves and examining the crust as if it were a crime scene and she was searching it for case breaking clues.
