((Conference Room, USS Khitomer Deck 1))
Rana: I will do my best to assist in this gathering of information on the Velithari physiology. Please be sure to explain your actions thoroughly.
El'Heem: Of course. We will not subject you to anything you do not agree to and we will ensure you understand each process thoroughly. ::looking to Talia talking to Naxell:: come. Chief Ohnari will join us shortly.
Melville-Kilpatrick: Standard medical practice. Walk you through everything before it's happening. Or while it's happening. Emergencies can be like that, y'know? ::a nervous chuckle::
The Ensign's behavior did not endear Rana to the medical practices of this crew. She made an effort to keep her looking for the more qualified female doctor subtle, so as to not offend the crew of the ship she was currently on.
Rana: ::just a little condescending:: I see. We shall be able to work nicely together, then.
El’Heem: Captain Rana, if you don’t mind, I was curious how the cloud reacted to the previous encounter with Sencha when the Alliance had arrived previously?
Rana: Sencha? I am not too familiar...it is possible that this was one of the methods they attempted to use to attack, but I don't believe that our sensors have yet developed to detect it. Whatever its effect, it was not very noticeable.
Melville-Kilpatrick: ::as if he understands:: Oh. That makes sense.
El’Heem: The reason I ask is because we don’t yet know how organisms that interact with subspace biologically are affected by Sencha, and it will be useful in our research.
Finally, the female doctor joined them.
Ohnari: My apologies for the delay, I hope I didn't keep you waiting.
Melville-Kilpatrick: Not at all!
Rana: Let us get to our purpose.
((Main Sickbay, USS Khitomer))
Rana was intrigued by the lab. What would their sensors look like, since they were so frightened of the Jorogumo's?
Ohnari: Ah...it seems a few things are just...mildly out of place. ::turning:: Captain Rana, would it at all be possible for you to, um, shed some light on how to dissipate or, uh, render the filaments neutral? I'm afraid our differing physiology puts us at a disadvantage...they tend to be a little painful when accidentally touching.
Rana had hardly recognized the filaments as an issue, let alone that they would cause a problem to the crew of this ship.
Rana: Hm? Ah. Allow me.
She began to hum until she reached a pitch that most members of Kitomeer's crew would have difficulty reaching, then changed until she was humming a melody familiar to the Velithari. Then she reached out to touch the nearest one, using most of her senses to communicate. The filaments began to vibrate and gather until they had formed an even smaller clump, then fell to the ground, inert.
It took effort, and it certainly wouldn't be able to remove the filaments entirely, but it would do in order to make them less dangerous in this particular room.
Melville-Kilpatrick: Response
El'Heem: We surmised that the filaments were not unlike an immune system response, but I didn’t assume it was reflexive.
She shouldn't have expected them to get it. She clicked in mild frustration.
Ohnari: If I may ask, these...filaments, what purpose do they serve?
Rana: They are a part of our nebular defensive system, Doctor. And like everything in the nebula, they need to be able to act and communicate, as well as respond to the environment around them.
Melville-Kilpatrick: Response
Ohnari: That is fascinating. A tactile communication system...I imagine with your exoskeletons, the information can be provided without the mild abrasions it seems to cause our varied crew. Does it report directly back to your ship?
Rana: Indeed. I believe even now my crew is monitoring the filaments.
Rana couldn't let them think that she was completely unguarded. The trust was still tentative, new. She needed back-ups, just in case.
Melville-Kilpatrick: Response
El'Heem: The sheer magnitude of your symbiosis is astounding. So, the question remains, was the cloud and the Jorogumo for that matter, genetically engineered by the Velithari or are they a whole other species you’ve grown to live in harmony with?
Rana: Do these questions help to clarify your understanding of my physiology or to end the matter at hand? ::frustrated:: Must everything be an interrogation?
Perhaps she was more annoyed than she had expected to be to be working with males, even ones that were allegedly as competent as the members of her crew. The previous deception on their part, followed by the barrage of questions when she believed they were supposed to be solving a more pressing issue, was getting on her nerves.
Melville-Kilpatrick/Ohnari: Response
El’Heem: No, you’re absolutely right. There will be times for more questions later. It is difficult to turn a curious mind off. ::beat:: Before, you mentioned that when the Lattice Alliance arrived, there was very little effect on the cloud from the Sencha radiation. I believe that could be the result of the cloud itself preventing the Alliance from firing at full power.
Rana: It is possible. The biological component has evolved over time and responded to outsiders, with our help and the assistance of our technological leads.
Melville-Kilpatrick/Ohnari: Response
El’Heem: Have you any reports of what the long range volley they are using now, is doing to the cloud?
Rana: Those reports would be routed to Vidya or Alya first, or a crew member in their unit, then directed to me if their consequences were important. I suppose I could make contact with Jorogumo to ask, if you truly thought it necessary.
Melville-Kilpatrick/Ohnari: Response
Rana: My apologies, I realize this comes across as rude to your people. ::addressing Ohnari directly:: I believe your...intelligence officer? Yes? She stated that it was possible that this warp drive that you and this Alliance share could do significant damage to the nebula. More damage than the Sencha.
El'Heem/Melville-Kilpatrick/Ohnari: Response
Rana: If this is true, I believe my question would not be the effects of the Sencha on my people, but of the warp drive. We have lived with the microorganisms in the nebula for quite some time.
El'Heem/Melville-Kilpatrick/Ohnari: Response
Rana: I have limited-to-no experience with either of these technologies, but whatever prevents harm to my people is what is best for them, and that is what I want.
El'Heem/Melville-Kilpatrick/Ohnari: Response
