Shakti was pleased with the results of the incubation experiment. More acceptable incubation species that could be identified, the better. So far, only one of the alien species they had identified was inappropriate. It was an unfortunate but necessary fact that the crystalline species served no positive purpose, though, perhaps some worthwhile use could be made of the fragments. There was much work to be done with the other species. So much work.
As Shakti was leaving the birthing chamber she noticed the marriage priestess approaching. The younger woman stopped, bowed and then looked up at the ceiling exposing her neck to Shakti as a sign of submission.
Shakti: Enough priestess Agni. What do you require of me?
Shakti continued walking as Agni began to walk beside her down the corridor.
Agni: Priestess. There is one more bride in need of selecting a groom.
Shakti took a deep breath that spread out the chitin plates of her thorax.
Shakti: She is late. :: beat :: Can she wait until the next session? Individuals have been mating for millennium without priestesses watching over them. Is my presence necessary?
Agni: She is a physics professor and a member of the Marathi cohort.
Shakti nodded. The Marathi were a prominent cohort. They would consider her absence to be an insult. And a professor. Important and valuable. Shakti motioned for Agni to continue.
Agni: Her name is Svaha and she appears to be as ready as any female I have ever seen. :: Shakti stopped short. Agni took one additional step and turned to face Shakti.:: Priestess?
Shakti: How do you judge her character? Does she have the strength of will to participate in the experiment?
Agni: I can't say with certainty. She came here after the hour of selection so I judge her to be determined. She is of the Marathi. It is possible. You could offer her the choice.
((Timeskip - Bridal Chamber ))
Shakti knew from the first instant she saw Svaha that Svaha was both intelligent and ready to select a male. How well educated she might be was another issue. Giving her the choice seemed to be correct. The young female bowed and showed Shakti her neck.
Shakti: You are Svaha. You have not gone through the selection before.
Svaha: That is correct, priestess.
Shakti: You're most fortunate today. Most females are only given three to choose from but I'm going to offer you a fourth choice. The fourth choice will be ... unusual. That selection will require a great deal of self control. You will have to resist powerful, natural, normal urges.
Svaha: I don't understand.
Shakit: ::placing a comforting arm across the younger, smaller female's shoulders:: You know that when you select a male, he becomes yours to do with as you please.
Svaha: Yes, priestress. But if the male survives the joining, there won't be any children.
Shakti: Normally that is true. ::motioning to Agni :: Agni. Bring in the candidates.
Agni bowed and backed out of the room. Shakti glanced down as Svaha. Svaha appeared to be utterly confused.
Shakti: There won't be any penalty if you choose to make the more natural choice. If you choose the unusual option there will be rewards.
Three males entered looking much as you would expect individuals who knew with absolute certainty that one of them would be dead in a manner of minutes. They knew what was coming. They were following the path taken by countless generations of their forefathers. Their lives had been what they had known since early childhood what their lives would be. It was inevitable. It was natural. If they were not selected this time then it would be the next time or the time after that. That their sacrifice would mean life for four or more did not seem to cheer them up for some reason. Behind them, Agni pushed a table with one of the most revolting creatures Shakti had ever seen securely trapped to it.
Svaha: Are you asking me to mate with... that... abomination?
Shakti: You misunderstand. I expect you to mate with one of the three males. The choice and the possible reward comes after that.
Svaha: I'm repeating myself but I don't understand.
Shakti shook her head. Perhaps the female was not as intelligent as she had hoped. Or perhaps none of her teachers or her mother had fully explained to her the way of the grimses and grimlees.
Shakti: In a normal mating, you would remain with the male until you pass your fertilized eggs. The natural response to the mating is that you bite the male's neck, killing him. After that, you force the eggs into the his body for incubation. :: beat :: We are experimenting with using aliens as incubation hosts.
Svaha: Mate with my choice of males and either use that male for incubation or... that ... whatever you call that thing.
Shakti: That is correct. Hideous, isn't it? :: Svaha nodded shakily in agreement.:: I believe that creature is called a Kinglon. Do not ask where that name came from.
Svaha: ::taking a deep breath but unable to look away from the Klingon on the table.:: You mentioned a reward.
Shakti: Here are the two paths. Select one of the males, mate with him and use him to nourish your offspring. Completely natural and in the end you have offspring. No further reward. Your other option is to select one of the males, mate with him and use the Kinglon to nourish your young. If you can resist the perfectly normal, powerful urge to kill the male you mate with, he will become your property. You will also receive significantly better living quarters and a large financial award. And for your next selection time, you will be the first to select a mate.
Svaha: And the risk is that my offspring won't survive or may be abnormal.
Shakti : oO She is intelligent afterall. Oo That is correct. So far, the number of failed or deformed larva has fallen within the normal range. :: beat :: Which path will you choose?
((Timeskip to avoid ... well ... you know. Bridal Chamber))
Shakti and Agni watched after the first stage of the mating was complete. As they had expected for a first time female, it was soon over. The selected groom lay flat on his back, his head positioned so that his neck was fully exposed. In that pose, he waited for the inevitable end of his life. Svaha shook nearly uncontrollably.
Agni: Now we find out how strong her will-power is. What do you think she will choose, priestess?
Shakti: She is clearly struggling. I can't say whether she will succeed in resisting nature or not. Only a few have mastered the urge so far. Will she choose for richer or will she choose for poorer?
Svaha opened her mouth, leaned forward and gripped the male's throat but she didn't close her mouth. She shook violently for a moment before pulling back. She sat up briefly before leaning forward again placing her head against her mate's thorax. She remained for a heartbeat before getting up and moving to the Klingon.
Shakti: For richer it is. Well done, Svaha. Well done indeed.
