to USS Khitomer – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Main Engineering, Deck 12, USS Khitomer, in the vicinity of the nebula))
Lera paused for a moment from her duties. The routine of work eased a great deal of her mind. The work demanded her full attention. The doubts and worries about her adequacy as either a Vulcan or a Human were momentarily forgotten. Perhaps she was inadequate in some areas but not engineering. Engineering she knew. The durite and the unobtanium were as familiar and comfortable as an old pair of jeans. Sure. There were individuals who better engineers than she was but she was confident that she could hold her own with any of them.
The engineering team was functioning smoothly, ever dutiful, ever ready to keep the ship running and safe.
Lera glanced at Ginny. There was an example of injustice. Ginny was a fine engineer as well and Lera would have been completely comfortable with working for Ginny being in command.
The light on the console called for Lera's immediate attention. She pressed one panel after another calling up the images that had come from the bridge. Lera twisted and rotated the images. It took only a minute before she recognized the ship being displayed and she caught her breath. A Sheliak ship.
Michaels: Ginny. If you have a minute, come, take a look at this diagram we just received from the bridge.
Ensign Lacy came immediately and stood next to Lera. Lera watched her as she studied the read out.
Michaels: Your thoughts?
Lacy: Response
Michaels: Yes. It is definitely a large Sheliak craft. Based on the readings the bridge is sending, it appears to be adrift. It is showing a minimal power signature and no obvious lifesigns. :: Lera rotated and twisted the image. :: There is something wrong about it.
Lacy: Response.
Lera summoned a display on the side panel of the known types of Sheliak vessels. She swept aside the displays of the possibilities that were obviously not a match. Lera adjusted the remaining two candidates that showed similar configurations, reducing them to outlines scaled to match the data from the bridge. She then superimposed them one at a time over the image of the derelict ship. Although one was a much closer match than the other, neither was an exact match.
Lacy: Response
Michaels: Either that or the derelict is showing major structural damage. Note the drive section here. The angle does not match our diagram. And, assuming we have correctly identified the ship classification, this structure here is missing. There is an remote possibility that this is a poor imitation of a Sheliak ship.
Lacy: Response
Michaels: I have no idea. It is almost as though something broke the ship, or the ship broke itself trying to free itself.
Lera settled back and managed the slightest of smiles. Here, at last, was the first new and challenging thing to work on since their shoreleave.
Lacy: Response
