((Ancient Lab, Surface Ring 42))

Careno: Okay, okay, this is it. The good news is this console's independently powered, the bad news is I can't for the life of me figure out what kind of power system it uses. Any hints, Thand?

Nifraag bit his tongue.  He wanted to scream at the young woman, but he was distracted by the counting of the console.  It wasn't audible, but with each change in numbers, he felt as if a shot fired through his ear.  He imagined their bodies disintegrating as some ancient lab workers got revenge on the team that had stumbled upon their workspace eons later.

Thand: The only writing out of place on this thing ::stabing a finger in the direction of the console:: are 'life' and 'repulsor'.

The pink-haired Vulcan seemed to not listen to him, instead she reached into the bowls of the console, pulling out a length of glowing cable, not dissimilar from what might be aboard the Hopper behind his quarter's walls.  Before he could reflect on what is going on, she shoved the cable into his face roughly.

Careno: Cable. Port. Download please.

oO Frack ... you ... Oo

Instead of following his instinct he snapped at her and hissed before taking the cable and shoving it into his PADD - he would have to make his feelings toward the Engineer known later.  The PADD began trying to negotiate the protocol to communicate with the alien console.  It stopped and asked for his input based on his translation matrix.  He chose the word 'simulation' from the words he was presented with.

Careno: ::biting her bottom lip in concentration:: I love you, too.

It seemed the PADD was working through a simulated transfer of data, required by the console to complete the connection.  IT began moving another set of connection protocols, moving indicators from red to blue to indicate success.

Thand: The transfer is starting.

Careno: Okay, start looking for something that could be the power source. If we can disconnect it, this phase variance field should just go away.

He was straring to get a list of files, and systems, and procedures being offered up by the console.  They all seemed to indicate some sort of sentry system, guarding something, security, but nothing seemed to indicate anything urgent.  There were no mentions of override or identification codes - an oddity, he thought.

Kendrick: ::frustrated:: Why didn't I bring a frakking torch?! ::looking up at Careno:: How much time have we got left.

He tapped a control on the PADD and was rewarded with a beep and what might be a schematic of ... something.  In the lower right-hand corner was something that looked like a tank, or a well. As his hand hovered over it the PADD displayed related controls and systems.  There was an indicator the PADD made it appear as if he could interrupt its connection to the rest of the system.  There were several other alien words next to it that said 'caution', 'warning' and 'reasonable procedure'.  It did not seem to be suggesting he actually sever the connection.

Kendrick: Any luck trying hacking into the system? ::at Careno:: Any chance this thing might blow up?

Careno: I've got no idea. But I'd rather not stick around to find out.

Thand: ::growling:: I think I might have a power source, but the alien files suggest that's not something we want to blindly do ... it could make things much worse ...

Before he could finish, Kendrick sprang to his feet and dusted himself off.   He seemed to have made a decision.

Kendrick: ::at Thand:: Do it!

Careno: response

Nifraag balked 0 he did not want to make things worse.  For all he knew there could be a backup system that would just shoot them all - aloof Vulcans, irritable humans, and genius Tellarites alike. Frantically, he pushed another control to see if there was some indicator of what might happen when he pressed that button.

There was nothing.

Kendrick: We're out of sync from the rest of the universe, which means we might as well be dead already. ::at Thand, firmly:: Do it, Thand. That's an order, dammit!

Thand: It's on your head!

He smashed his hand on the control, severing the connection from what he assumed was a power supply and the rest of the console.  He squeezed his eyes shut, assuming they were about to find something much worse than what they were currently experiencing.

Any: response

From deep within the vast room there was a sound, as if a cycle of an engine was being started - a whump, whump, pause, whump, whump.  It was definitely artificial, and was accompanied by a slow change of the lights - from their purple to a light blue over the course of several seconds.

When it seemed the transition was complete, a loud screech reverberated through the lab, echoing and hurting his ears.  The metal on metal sound seemed to cause the floor to vibrate and hurt his teeth.

There was an echo as it stopped, and his PADD beeped, changing to add a entire new section of schematics and procedures, as if something had been hidden and no longer was.

Thand: I guess we aren't dead ::mutter:: No thanks to you. ::regular voice:: Did it work?

Any: Response

Thand: The console seems to be pointing to something new ... systems, or facilities.

Any: Response

Thand: If I knew, rest assured you'd be the first to know.

Any: Response
