(( Briefing Room, Deck 1, USS Juneau ))

Being one of the most junior members in the room, Sival thought it was appropriate to listen to the conversation rather than chime in. In fact, he wondered why he was at the meeting at all. He was only an ensign, and the medical department was already represented by the CMO.

Generally, Sival did not like meetings. Too much group-thinking aloud. And they were so slow. He had to listen to drones of words just to understand a single idea. So dull. The result was that his mind would wander, usually daydreaming about a topic related to the meeting, but not always. Today that topic was wondering why Arys' sweater was on the briefing room table.

Sweater aside, he did try to listen to the briefing as intently as he could, initially with interest, then with concern.

Oddas: The science staff has been working on determining the answers to some of those questions.

Trovek: The growth they are experiencing is quite remarkable :: Arys pulled up several color coded graphs :: We’ve chosen a few markers to measure said pre-industrial discovery, and it’s very uncommon for a people to achieve such a level of growth without outside help.

T’Lea:  So, details of the planet’s classification, including mineral deposits can be found in the briefing packet. Nothing out of the ordinary was detected; however, we discovered a deep vein of Deuterium…

T’Lea: Here. It is located several kilometers offshore beneath the ocean and runs along a seismic fault and toward a settlement here….

T’Lea: What got our attention was that upon a closer look at the Deuterium deposits we found an unusual low grade power signal. It could be organic and geographic in nature. Lieutenants…

Falt: Response

Kendrick: Captain-

Kenrick: If I may. :: he took over control of the holographic projection :: On my way up here, I received some disturbing news from Tactical. One of our latest deep ocean scans revealed the wreckage of a vessel. :: zooming in on the ocean, near the city :: Preliminary metallurgic analysis showed no link with any structures found so far on the planet.

Qinn: Did the Cardassians crash on the planet and fail to mention it in their survey report?

Kendrick: No, Sir. ::pauses:: My people have concluded the wreckage is…

Kendrick: Borg.

T’Lea: That would explain the faint energy signal.

Trovek: And you have not detected anything Borg on the surface? Is the wreckage accessible to the locals?

Falt: response

Oddas: response

Qinn: =/\= Qinn to bridge, begin monitoring all subspace frequencies for any repeating signals. If you can’t identify it, report it directly to Chief of Science for analysis=/\=

Qinn: Have the Cardassians, Mithgiln, or anyone reported any kind of Borg activity in this region in the past?

Any: response

Qinn: How long ago would they have to have crashed for none of the region's major powers to have noticed a Borg expedition?

Any: Response

Qinn: How deep is the crash site?

Any: Response

So it appeared that a Borg ship had crashed into the ocean of a planet with pre-warp civilizations.

Sival sighed. The Borg.

Sival remembered that Emily had been at the infamous battle of Wolf 359. Fortunately, she had escaped, but only to die a year later. He quickly swept that thought out of his mind.

Fortunately, Starfleet had made incredible advances in the thirty years since that time to battle the Borg. Today they were no longer regarded as an all-powerful behemoth, and Starfleet now had tactics and technology that evened the playing field. That isn't to say still weren't a very dangerous adversary.

A crashed Borg ship on a pre-industrialized planet, however, was a grave concern. Obviously, the world was under threat of assimilation. But even if all the Borg had died and only wreckage remained, the cultural contamination that Borg technology could cause, if discovered, was severe.

Dr. Indobri voiced what everyone must be thinking.

Indobri: So, am I right in assuming that we plan to send a team down to investigate this Borg crash site?

Any: Response

Indobri: In that case, I suppose it would be prudent of me to brush up on the latest research in countering Borg assimilation as well as any methods that may have been developed to prevent such assimilation.

Sival had a similar thought. He hadn't had much experience with the Borg. He only encountered anything related to them once. He had been working with refugees from the Hobus fallout. A man had purchased a piece of Borg technology from the black market and tried to 'install' it himself. It was Sival's task to remove it. That was the extent of his Borg experience.

Sival: I would be happy to assist you, Doctor. It may also be wise to learn about the planet's inhabitants. If we understand their biology, we have a greater chance of countering any effects.... And we may want to consider the possibility of having to treat Borg survivors as well...

Sival was a doctor, and he was ethically-bound to treat any being, even if that being was a Borg drone.

Any: Response

Sival assumed that he would stay aboard the ship to conduct the medical research. However, he briefly imagined what it would be like to go to the surface and be sailing on the sea. Of course, they probably wouldn't do that even if they did go down. Knowing this did not take away any pleasure from the thought.
