((Anchorage - Level 15 - XO's Office))
Standing in front of the - helpfully labeled - door, Lumm straightened her back just a little bit, nearly unconsciously. She knew that in time she would grow more familiar with her superiors and meeting them wouldn't bring as much anxiousness as it did now, but that didn't make it any easier. She took a deep breath and pressed the door chime.

Qinn: Enter!

The door parted open and Lumm took a couple of steps inside, not wanting to intrude.

Lumm: Hello Sir, Ensign Lumm, reporting for duty.

A quick look into the office revealed an Orion female wearing the Gold of Operations already sitting across from the XO.

Qinn: Welcome, Ensign, please come in and take a seat ::Gesturing at the other, open, seat across from her at her desk::.  One second, I’m just finishing up with Lieutenant Neshala.

Lumm: Lieutenant. ::With a respectful nod.::

Neshala: Response

Lumm fiddled with her PADD for a second or two. She knew the feeling would eventually go away, but being the junior officer in a room was still slightly uncomfortable.

She waited a few moments and soon enough she looked up as the Executive Officer handed a PADD over to the Lieutenant. Sensing that she'd soon be called, Lumm straightened her back a little and waited.

Qinn: You should be all set, Lieutenant, quarters have been assigned and your clearances are active.  Unless you have any questions, you’re free to get settled and get the lay of the land.

Neshala: Response

(OOC: As said before, feel free to slip an extra line or two here.)

As the Orion left, Kalia turned her attention back to Lumm, offering her a smile as she leaned forward in her chair and held out her hand. The smile might have been a small gesture, but it was enough to make Lumm relax a little.

Qinn: Do you have your orders with you, Ensign?

Lumm: Yes, ma'am. ::Smiling back as she handed her PADD over.::

Kalia took the PADD and ran her gloved fingers over the surface, listening as the contents were read out in her aural implants.  Once she’d listened to the orders she smiled and leaned back.

Qinn: Excellent, a new HCO officer.  I should have had Neshala stay, they are a new Comms and Helm officer as well, although their focus is in Communications.  I hope your trip out here was quiet and peaceful?

Lumm: Indeed it was. It gave me plenty of time to get acquainted with the Starfleet file about the Ring.

Qinn: That’s good to hear.  You’ve been assigned as an Helm, Communications, Operations Officer, but obviously your specialty is at the helm.  And I do think you’ll get your flight time in.  We’ve got quite a fleet of shuttles and runabouts at our disposal, as well as the Eagle, and potentially the Juneau if necessary.  When you’re not piloting, you’ll likely spend a lot of time in Flight control managing the air space around the city and above it.

Lumm had double majored in Navigation and Operations but indeed, she had chosen Helm as her primary specialty. She had logged hundreds of hours in the Academy flight range and she had proven particularly ingenious at finding the most efficient route between any two points in space - even without using a computer.

There was something to be said about feeling comfortable navigating in an environment with no up nor down, left nor right. It was often said that one had to possess at least one special talent to make it in Starfleet, and Lumm liked to think that was hers, even though her fellow cadets liked to tease her actual flying skills.

Lumm: Excellent. I must confess that when I first received my assignment I was under the impression there wouldn't be much flying involved. ::Smiling:: It's good to know I was wrong.

Qinn: So, tell me a little about yourself, Ensign.  I like to know who’s I’m going to be working closely with.

Lumm was caught a little off guard by the request, but quickly recomposed herself.

Lumm: I would say that while I am a fairly competent pilot, navigation and trajectories are perhaps my best skills. I have a... natural talent for astrophysics, I suppose.

It was true. She actually considered entering the Sciences track at the Academy, but she was more drawn to the practical applications of physics than the pure theoretical side of it. That's why she choose Helm as her main specialty.

Qinn: Response

Lumm: I am in fact considering pursuing further education in that field, yes, perhaps a Master's. ::Smiling:: I am sure that the Ring will present me with plenty of opportunities for a thesis, if I do go through with it.

She was more than considering, actually. She had every intention of pursuing a Master's, and with the amount of research that was sure to be done in the Ring very soon, there would be no shortage of subjects to explore. Surely she would be able to convince a Science officer or two to serve as an advisor.

Qinn: Response

Lumm: It was certainly a surprise, but in many respects this is exactly the sort of assignment I was hoping for. One of the things that drew me to Starfleet was exactly the opportunity to see and explore places like this. The universe is so large and full of possibilities that chances are that anything that we can imagine does, in fact, exist. The Ring is a major example of that.

She was sure some of her Academy colleagues would be at least a little jealous of her now if they knew the nature of her assignment. Denali was sure to become a hub of science and research once it got up and running, and Lumm was definitely excited to be a part of that.
