(( Clinic, 3rd floor, Anchorage, Denali Station ))
Karise followed Sera over to the wall panel and watched as the engineer removed the panel covering over the purifier and began an inspection of it. The Vulcan scanned the device and eventually removed the filter, allowing Karise a good view of the black substance covering it.
Sera: I do not believe this is an equipment malfunction…
Indobri: I daresay not.
Karise walked over to the table and retrieved her medical tricorder, then returned and began to scan the substance.
Indobri: Definitely the same toxic compound as is in the water, but perhaps more concentrated. Any idea where it’s coming from?
Sera: Well, it is not coming from the filtration unit. I will have to investigate the main filtration unit to determine whether it is isolated to the clinic, or we have a more comprehensive problem.
Karise shook her head. They were moving into a facility that was pre-made before they ever found it. Who knew what kinds of issues they were likely to run into down here. This was just the start.
oO I miss my sickbays already Oo
Indobri: Well, let’s see if we can track it down. This stuff is dangerous to have entering into our water supply.
Sera: Dangerous? Are there concerns for ingestion only, or can this contamination affect personnel with direct contact via skin?
Indobri: Oh, it’s definitely dangerous if ingested, but I don’t think mere contact would be an issue. Though we’ll want to decontaminate skin exposures just to be safe.
Sera: ::nods:: Very well. The main filtration system is located in Fairbanks basement level. I will have to pull up the Denali schematics to determine where the water source is for the administrative area, for although speculative, I doubt the source is our main water filtration unit.
Karise looked at Sera as she consulted something on a padd before speaking again.
Sera: It would appear that the water is supplied via an underground reservoir beneath the administration center of Denali. That is most fortuitous – it is well within walking distance. If you are available, would you perhaps like to accompany me? Your medical tricorder is configured in a manner that would be most beneficial to determine potential source of the contaminants…that is if it’s in some way biological in origin.
As she would expect from a Vulcan, the statement was quite logical. And the fact of the matter was, the clinic was pretty much dead in the water until they got those water purifiers working again. As the CMO, it was her responsibility to find out if there was a biological factor involved, even if she couldn’t fathom how such a thing might be possible.
Indobri: Infallibly logical, Ensign. Very well, let’s go.
Sera: Response
Karise shut off her tricorder, and gathered a few other items, including a sample kit, that she hoped might be useful, then nodded at the Vulcan woman.
Together, they made their way out of the clinic, heading for the source of the water. As they walked, she looked over at the Vulcan.
Indobri: Okay, Ensign. Speculate. I know you are an engineer, not a doctor, but in your expert opinion, what could get past the filters in the water purifier?
Sera: Response
Indobri: Yes, I would speculate that it has to be biological in nature. It’s the only thing I can think of that would allow for such rapid contamination of the water. But my tricorder didn’t pick anything up.
Sera: Response
The theory made complete sense. If there was a biological organism in the water sufficiently small enough to evade the filter in the water system, then it was likely to be able to evade the sensors in a tricorder, even one specifically tuned to scan for biological organisms.
Indobri: I think I should consider…
She didn’t get a chance to finish before a transmission interrupted her.
Stelek: =/\= Stelek to Medical ... =/\=
She was about to reply when she heard the Captain’s voice clearly waiving off Stelek’s communication. Wondering what that was all about, she decided to let it pass for now. If it was an emergency, they would let her know. Otherwise, it could wait until this situation was over.
Sera: Response
Indobri: I’m not sure. At any rate, if it’s important, they will let me know. Now, as I was saying, I should consider putting an alert out to not drink the water until we get this water situation cleared up.
Sera: Response
Indobri: :: tapping her commbadge :: =/\= Doctor Indobri to Denali Station Operations. There appears to be some kind of contamination in the water supply. Ensign Sera and I are investigating. Until we have clearer information on what is happening, I recommend shutting down the water supply to all areas. We’ll have to get fresh water from the Juneau and the Eagle in the interim. =/\=
Anyone for Operations: =/\= Response =/\=
With that done, she looked back at Ensign Sera. Alright, let’s get this solved as quickly as we can. I have a feeling that a number of people are about to become very annoyed at me. I just hope no one is taking a water shower.
